WIS-TV to begin 4PM News September 12th.

I saw a commercial today that WIS-TV will begin doing news at 4pm starting September 12th. Interesting, I wondered when this market would catch on to it. Other program notes this fall include syndicated news show "America Now" will air weekdays at 3pm replacing Dr. Phil which moves to WOLO at 5pm. Inside Edition which aired at 12:30pm on WIS moves to WLTX at 7:30pm.

Wow, WIS has a hard enough time getting their present newscasts on the air with that amateurish staff. I guess they'll just throw more clips from "The Raycom News Network" on the air, along with throwaways from NBC News.

Not too many years ago WIS 10 was the news channel for the midlands and surrounding areas. They were often rated as one of the top news stations in the southeast. WLTX and WOLO use to play catch up to them, boy how things have changed.

Insanity. They obviously just want the local inventory because they certainly aren't doing it for content.

I guess they'll just fill it with their mantra WWW. We Win Weather.

I wouldn't agree with calling them amateur though, I've seen better produced shows by the J-school at USC.

Heck...I was apart of better produced shows at the J-school.

My problem is not with the technical aspects of WOLO, WLTX, and WIS. I do have a problem with the writing. The news writing is awful and most of the time devoid of substance. I guess no one is teaching grammar or reportage.

I am in complete accord with you about news writing, Dudefan. It is absolutely awful, at least in the Columbia market. In fact, I find it insulting.

I think it is a mandate for all of Raycom's stations, no matter the affiliation, to have 4pm news and HD. Myrtle Beach has it; Charleston has had it since they were a JP station; Savannah has it, Wilmington carries Oprah otherwise they probably would; and Richmond has one.

Live 5 probably has at least 3 or 4 stories per newscast from their sister stations; I wonder what WIS has. Hard to believe just four or five years ago they were the "newscast of record" in South Carolina. They had the best talent (David Stanton, Craig Melvin and Susan Aude Fisher), very good reporters, covered more stories than anyone else, and had their huge cable reach.

Now, WLTX is probably the better newscast in the Columbia area. WIS's talent has gone downhill, losing Mandy Mitchell to WRAL, Angie Goff, Melvin, and several others.

It's also huge having WIS losing the SEC Network rights and them going to WOLO. That will be a big boost for WOLO, and people will tune into their newscasts more.

Hannah Horne and Dawndy Mercer Plank competing to see who can sound more country and who can use more southern slang. And those 15 year old reporters! If any of them are products of the USC School of Journalism, there are some definite problems there. To charlestondxman, I'd say at least 50% of each WIS newscast is either "Raycom News Network" or NBC fluff pieces. Yes, it really is rather insulting. My cable only carries WIS news, but I have caught WOLO news a few times OTA---though obviously produced on the cheap and not very informative (they need more reporters), at least they have some self respect. A tight little no-frills program, I like the Main Street presentation.

WIS went down hill and then fell off a cliff. The southern slang thing is something to be careful of as I remember a radio station PD/GM that made himself look like a complete ass by trying to get rid of the southern slang on air in Columbia. In the end all he got was lower ratings and his big head transfered out of South Carolina.

Back in the old days when all WIS-TV staffers used standard English on the air, their 7:00 Report averaged 350,000 viewers a night and I don't think station management suffered at all.

The person/problem I am speaking of happened in radio. About 90% of WIS's problems came to them from new ownership and a different way of doing things.

Either the News Director or some consultant is probably encouraging the News talent to be more "relatable" by using local colloquisms, slang, etc.

Memo to all Local New People: Your kids aren't cute, your mate's habits are not of interest to me and all the good natured "joshing" between you and your co-workers probably ends with the words "we're clear."

I have completely quit watching local news altogether and am happier for it.

How is WCSC-TV news doing since they became part of the "Raycom family?" Raycom's news dominance in SC should have never been allowed by the FCC. In addition to stations in Columbia, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach/Florence,they also cover SC from Charlotte, Savannah, and Augusta. Only the upstate isn't subjected to the "Raycom News Network."

WCSC is still a very highly-rated #1 because they are really the only station with a big social media presence. Channel 5 has almost 19,000 likes on Facebook: the other two stations combined have less than 5,000.

Also, all of their news anchors have been around for many years, and because they have most of the best syndicated programming and most of their viewers have been watching for decades.

They are ridiculous with the "Raycom News Network" stuff. At least two or three stories per every newscast they have are stories from them, usually Savannah and their sister markets like Charlotte and Columbia.

Last night, however, they showed a story about an extreme couponer from Toledo, Ohio, which wasn't even edited and included all these local references.
