Wisconsin FMs Heard in Texas

Driving near Brenham,Texas (60 miles NW of Houston) on State Highway 290, July 4th, 4:50-5:05 p.m. CDT, got two good Wisconsin catches loud and clear on my Nissan Pathfinder radio -- WUWM Milwaukee at 89.7 with All Things Considered (NPR) and WPNE-FM, Green Bay at 89.3 with the same NPR program.

Both stations also lit up the RDS read-out with full call letters.

That's a 1004 mile hop for WUWM and 1009 miles for WPNE. Signals vanished totally by 5:06 p.m. Central Time.

Thats quite a catch! Although, your milage seems a bit off, WUWM is apprx 1286 miles away and 1449 miles away. I'm sure the engineers of those stations would love to hear you picked them up down there! Being from the dairy state, I could probably get some addresses for you if you want

Thanks, enigmawi -- I would appreciate those phone numbers -- also, I used a "distance between cities" website to get the distance between the stations and Brenham, Texas -- but the results from the website did seem too close to me, too, so thanks for correcting them. Just curious -- what's the best website to get accurate distances?

I just got the distances using Yahoo! Maps. As for the addresses:

Wpne 89.3 FM-WGBW 91.5 FM Wisconsin Public Radio

Green Bay, WI 54311

WUWM Radio 89.7 - Milwaukee Public Radio

Glad to hear of the hop... and I think it might have been reciprocal! This thread might help me ID a signal I picked up today at around 6:30 PM, in St. Paul, MN, on 97.9. ;D It was a Hip-Hop/R&B kind of format, but it didn't come in long enough for me to catch even a *tentative* identification (say, a local ad.) I checked Radio-Locator, but ended up with seven or eight possible candidates on 97.9. Since the signal was so weak, I was at first going to assume it was the geographically closest of the listed Urban stations -- WJLB out of Detroit. However, after reading this thread, it sounds like I might have had KBFB-Dallas or KBXX-Houston!

(Incidentally -- how DOES one tell tropo apart from skip? Even a catch from Detroit suggests e-skip, at least by sheer distance... but the signal wasn't strong for any sustained period of time, as I'd seen with previous skip events. Furthermore, as I drove down the road, the Urban signal on 97.9 gave way to a number of more-familiar tropo catches here in St. Paul. The Christian station in Fargo, the Nostalgia station in Mason City, and the classic hits station in Stevens Point, WI, all made appearances. What's more, only one or two other frequencies on the entire dial had any significant activity on them -- 103.3 and 103.7, two of our most open frequencies around here, were quite dead indeed -- so I'm trying to figure out exactly what was going on here, tropo or skip. Any speculation would be appreciated. :))

What I know of tropospheric ducting is that it usually occurs within a 200-500 mile range. Sporadic E-skip tends to cover from 500-1500 miles, give or take. To me, what matters is pulling the stations from far away. Last week, here in NJ, I was hearing something on 101.9 that sounded like it was from Michigan, right over NYC's WQCD on frequency. To me, that was borderline E-skip. Tropo for me on 101.9 is WCIB, Hyannis, Mass., at about 210 miles.

Last week, here in NJ, I was hearing something on 101.9 that sounded like it was from Michigan, right over NYC's WQCD on frequency.

Here are the stations on 101.9 in Michigan

WDET- Detroit- Wayne State University- Public Radio
WLDR- Traverse City- Country- Sunny Country 101.9
WKQS- Negaunee- Adult Contemporary- Sunny 101.9

I'm from Michigan, so I know a lot of the MI stations. Interestingly, i've never heard New York City through e-skip. I've heard Baltimore and possibly Philadelphia though.

Hey Lawppy:

It was Sunny 101.9 that I heard! I remember the moniker of Sunny, b/c we used to have one in Philly!

Thanks for the reply!

Don

But was it a Country station? Or Adult Contemporary?

101.9 is a wide open frequency for me. It's not a surprise to hear Sunny Country's 100kw signal (albeit very faint) around here, almost 200 miles away.

Remember that Yahoo Maps gives the driving distances, not the straight line distances. They could be dramatically off. For the most accurate distances, I recommend using the GPS distance finder on Indo.com's How Far Is It? page...
http://www.indo.com/distance/

Using the lat/lon of WUWM's transmitter, and the lat/lon of KULF in Brenham, TX, it IS about a 1,009 mile hop.

Lawppy:

It was the AC station. Didn't fully read your post; I see there are two sunny's up there!

thanks again,
Don
