Thanks Todd!

So being the Radio nerd that I am.... I airchecked a couple breaks yesterday. Plz take a listen and tell me what you all think. Now let's be professionals. I can stand to have my chops busted as long as it's in a professional manner. Any feed back would be great!

This website I used to upload this is acting kinda screwy. So when you click on the link, save it first then play it back with windows media player.

That's some very nice work Nick! Good job working the contest as well, and even though the "good pipes" thing is dated, your voice does come across very well.

Keep it up! Your chance will come...

With Flick and Kobe on board, they're probably close to a full staff. Did you get any feedback?

Yes I spoke with B94's new PD Ryan Mill several weeks ago. I am not one to be condescending or to act in an unprofessional manner. But my conversation with Mr. Mill left a very bad taste in my mouth. He spoke and acted as tho he was holier than tho. His issue with me was my resume. I've worked at 4 radio stations over the past 5 and a half years. 3 of which where part time and each have lasted at least a year. I have never been fired or laid off. I have never burned a bridge and I am still very close with all of my past PD's. I have always moved on to bigger opportunities so I can continue to learn and to grow. I tried to explain this to Mr. Mill but he acted as tho he already had his mind made up. It saddens me that radio has came down to what's on paper versus your ability to preform and entertaining air shift. I have no hard feelings and I wish them nothing but the best. I just would have rather him make his decision based on my air check. Hopefully I will see you all at some point in the future.

Nick, try to not take it personally. The same people are running the station, they brought Kobe back, and I think B's looking for a specific niche when it comes to their personalities.

Ryan Mill's experience? Oh, that's right. He was some kind of production guy/part-time B jock, who really wasn't that good.

Congratulations Nick on your attitude. Keep being professional. It may not have worked out with the B, but there are other radio stations in Pittsburgh and beyond. Your attiude and professionalism will pay off one day.

Good luck!

Sadly your experience is not exclusive to radio. I could write a book about rude or shocking behavior to which I was subjected during many interviews for non-radio jobs. One of my favorites was a sales job for which one of the other candidates was an ex-WYDD jock. He sent his entire air package with the resume (glossy headshots, aircheck, station
promo materials, etc.) The interviewer who was from out of town spent all of his time quizzing me about what I knew about the guy. It was quickly obvious that I was not getting the job. I now work in recruiting and HR, and one of my clients does something like this to make me cringe on at least a weekly basis.

I agree with Boss, not a good move on your part.

Nick, I almost got a big break coming out of college at WPEZ (which is now 3WS). At the last minute they decided I wasn't experienced enough and hired a guy who had worked at WJOI (the easy listening station that became B94). That guy was Jim Merkel.

Sometimes they just find better people. And if you're young and coming up the ladder with moderate experience you've got to blow them out of the water with your material to overcome that.

But really, don't ever post stuff like you did there. You've got to go with "I didn't make the cut, but at least they were nice enough to talk with me." Gotta be a pro.

Good luck.

I have to also agree with Boss on this one Nick. They might not have wanted you now, but kept you in a "future file" for something opens down the road. This might have changed all of that.

Might I add too, big companies like CBS and Clear Channel does not like their employees (or potential employees) sharing their thoughts on boards such as this. I have also heard that they make you sign off that you won't "speak for the company" on any level including these boards, so it makes me wonder if your pining for a job under your real name here caught the attention of Ryan Mill or Keith Clark, and made them look the other way from you. That's why most everyone here doesn't use their real names.

Sorry that it didn't work out. I wish nothing but the best for you in the future.

There are other stations on the dial, Nick. I agree with Boss and the others...regardless of the outcome, try not to vent your negative experience on this board. I know it's not easy, but try to make a negative experience as positive as possible. Your persistence and attitude will speak volumes louder than any aircheck!

Nick, sorry we won't be hearing you anytime soon on B-94 in Pittsburgh. But, will definitely check out your show next time we're down in Nitro visiting my brother in law and his family.

Keep your head high, you're young and have a good attitude.

Nick, you are like me in a way. Say what you feel and the heck with the outcome. I worked at a station back in the late 80's where I was the MD. The OM and I did not see eye to eye on many things and in a way I think he felt his job could be threatened, so he tried to find every little thing possible to get me in trouble or have a reason to fire me. I did things my way and one day he called me in and said you are fired. I said you can't fire me because I already had quit and the key was on the desk. That put some egg on the face and ruined his day.

The greatest thing was soon as the other stations found out I was available, I had a job at a competing station a few days later, with a better position (PD/Consultant) and pay, plus I could work my own hours, so sometimes it works to your advantage. Of course, that was back when I was in my early 20's (20 years ago). By the time I was 22, I got out of the biz all together and moved on. I was offered a job here at one of the stations about two years ago and laughed right in their face at what they wanted to pay me and walked out. I said you have got to be kidding if you think I would give up my businesses to come back to radio.

Hang in there, Pittsburgh is not the greatest radio market to work in, paywise and jobwise, unless you have a long running and huge following, and that sometimes don't guarantee job security anymore!

It is true that there are consulting firms out there making big money from corporations like Clear Channel for scanning chat rooms, blogs and message boards to report back what is being said about them.

In no way shape or form was I trying to be demeaning to Mr. Mill or speak badly of him or B94. It was just very difficult to hear that I didn't even get an opportunity for an interview because I have alway tried to better myself, learn, and become a better asset. I moved around as a part-timer in Cincy for that reason. And with the encouragement of all my PD's mind you. It is hard to comprehend how that doesn't make sense . I would much rather be judged by my abilities. Not by what a piece of paper says. Here is my resume in nut shell.

2001-2002 U. of Cincy
2002 - 2003 Ohio Center for Broadcasting
06/2003 - 08/2004 Overnights at The Rebel 105.9
08/2004 - 06/2005 Weekends, full time fill in, Production, and promotions at Warm 98 (#1 FM in Cincy at the time)
06/2005 - 06/2006 Weekends, full time fill in, Assistant Production Director, and Promotions at Q102
06/2006 - Present Full Time Midday's at Electric 102.7FM in Charlestion, WV.

Now can someone tell me what is wrong with that? I have never been fired, laid off, or asked to leave. I have continually tried to better myself and my career.

No arguement Nick. I don't think that anyone was disputing your credentials or that you shouldn't feel disappointed or even a little pissed off, but rather displaying those feelings in such a public way.

People by nature don't like their decisions debated. Radio people are no exception. What you are doing is exactly that; on the world wide web where anyone and everyone, including Ryan Mill and Keith Clark, can see.

We have pointed out what we perceive as an error on your part, and you're getting defensive about it. Just think what these guys with their egos feel when they see some guy who wants them to hire him questioning their decisions are thinking; "Yep, we did the right thing. This guy has an attitude problem. Who is he to say we were wrong? He would be nothing but trouble for us."

You do a real good job on the air. Focus on that, be mindful of what you say and where you say it, and the breaks will come your way.

Good luck my friend and happy holidays!
