WISH TV

I know this is a radio board, but does anyone know why WISH TV & WISH DT were off the air for many hours today? Google had a page on it, but that page has already been removed. Technical curiousity on my part...

:D Quote of the day.
Actually, the quote of the day was when the lady who answered the phone at WISH TV told me that there was a problem and...I quote..."They had to take the tower down". Therefore my search for info here...

Uhm...LIN owns like five towers in Indy. Surely there is an Aux TV transmitter at at least one of them?

They had to take the tower down
Her meaning is obvious, but ... :D

They did have an analog backup on Post Road in past years, but for whatever reason (no longer operational??), they didn't use it. I emailed their Chief & he indicated that emergency feedline repairs required shutting both analog & digital transmitters. Not sure I've ever witnessed something like that in the middle of the day...

Turn up your TV a few notches above normal and listen to the audio on WISH. It sounds awful to my ears...overmodulation and / or over-the-top processing.

For the record, I'm listening to the Analog OTA signal.

I don't have a digital TV, so no idea what is going on there.

Definitely clipping. I noticed it on all sorts of sounders, from Syndicated Programming (ET), the network (Bold and Beautiful), and TPIR. Seemed fine on voice alone (Today's Noon newscast was fine).

Even some of the classical music played at normally low levels during B&B was quite loud.

I was flipping between ET and Jeopardy! last night, and WISH is way louder than WTHR.

Let me ask about WISH audio.

On Analog about 2 months ago I heard the worst clipping of audio, especially on peaks. We receive our feed from Insight/Comcat from Noblesville.

This continued for some time so I called. After several calls the audio changed, and was good.

What are you hearing on digital? Our television can only handle analog or digital but not both.

Dies it sound like overmod on a digital feed with peaks clipping (sounding like a cd skipping?)?

I noticed they're streaming the Local Weather Station live from their website now.

But why aren't they a bit more aggressive about obtaining cable carriage for clustermate WIIH / Univision? Seems like they could pick up a few extra viewers by attempting to gain wider distribution, such as Lafayette & Logansport cable systems. They provide CBS for both areas, why not Univision?

They could even add WIIH as a digital subchannel on WLFI DT and WANE DT, and market it as "Univision Indiana."
Each "affiliate" could add a ticker with local news/weather/school info en español during the existing newscasts.

Perhaps this will change with the Comcast takeover.

Number 1, I bet they burned out a bullet in the transmission line; it used to happen to WANE-TV. (for clarity and disclosure I worked at WANE as an engineer for a year.) Number 2, the clipping issue: they probably don't have enough ears to catch it. They run a LOT of stations out of the N. Meridian complex, and their centralcasting idea means not enough techs to catch problems. WANE has had some problems with clipping but lately they've been good, on analog and HD.
