Yes, this is another TV-related subject (Let's get an Indiana TV Board established!) What does everyone think of WISH-TV's latest changes: new set, graphics, and "revamped" music? When was this change made?
It can be a problem. All HD channels have a certain amount of bandwidth to work with. In the case of TBN, they probably give more bandwidth to the primary TBN channel and gradually work down from there.
I wonder if the same proves true for the ION multicast.
As far as Indy reception goes in Lafayette, I'm able to get all of the Indy HD signals that broadcast from the NW side tower farm. WISH-HD and WHMB-HD by far are the most spotty with one or no bars on the signal meter. WXIN-HD and WRTV-HD have the best in overall reception with 4 and sometimes 5 bars (5 being the highest). I'm surprised that I don't get WNDY-HD or WTTK-HD...kind of wish I did. Forget about the Indy market signals on the Trafalger stick...too far south.
Besides the Indy stations, I can get WLFI-HD, of course, with all bars. Champaign stations WICD-HD, WCIA-HD, and WCCU-HD also come in well. The only channel from Champaign I have problems with on a regular basis is WCIA-HD which varies from being at 3-4 bars to no signal under normal atmosphereic conditions.
The new set debuted Wednesday April 25th with their 5pm newscast. It's very, very nice. Had a chance to see it up close on Tuesday April 24th at the "set party" for clients and media friends.
The new set doubles the amount of shots and areas used on air. The anchor desk is the focal point, of course, but the new set features 2 ceiling-to-wall rear screen projection walls, a mobile working news desk (used during AM show for traffic) an interview set, HUGE green wall and very nice and large working weather area. The weather area features forward looking work stations...so now when they're all hands on deck for severe weather, we won't see the backs of their heads.
The music was tweaked a bit...old jingles/themes still in use...some new stuff added just to keep current and sound fresh. The theme they've used over the years is still in use.
"8" logo stays the same, some graphic componets still in use too, but we won't see all the graphics, wipes and set location uses for a couple of weeks.
As far generating local HD content...it's coming. However, to do that, they must purcahse all new studio cameras, ENG cameras, RF/live trucks and transmission systems for the trucks and editing bays. If you watch Channel 13, their studio cameras and weather graphics are HD, but most ENG stuff is not HD...recorded or live. This is a very, very, very expensive move for TV to convert to HD...especially these days when business is not necessarily at it's peak.
One note...did you know that the location housing Channel 8, LIN Broadcasting operates 12 other TV stations? (Grand Rapids, Buffalo, Dayton, Lafayette, and 8 others). It's a hub location for LIN. Hub Master Control is awesome. 6 control pod locations, two stations each, one analog and one HD per station, so 24 transmissions being controlled/transmitted from one location! Every network program, commerical and promo feed is received at Channel 8, so I guess there are not secrets these days. That area operates 24/7 grabbing pre-fed programs, spots and promos, then turning them around to the spoked stations. Amazing.
While WISH's new set is much better than before and is clearly so much more versatile, they still didn't clear the bar set by WTHR.
I like the new look overall, but of course have a couple quibbles. The new weather center is a little too shiny, which I find distracting; and the screen in the working-news/traffic center is too small.
Seems like the "Back Home Again" music signature is fading in favor of the standard In-Sink signature -- not sure that's a loss, really. The graphics refresh is welcome, especially the new typefaces used. I'm still getting used to the big 8 flying out at me with the next element inside.
With this change, the station also changed its slogan to "Your 24-Hour News Source", apparently a concession to the Internet.
Unlike mobilene, I really miss the "Back Home again in Indiana" theme. I didn't recognize it as the state song until I played it back, but the generic In-Sink theme just isn't as good. I've been hearing it on WTHI for a decade or so ::
The old orange news set, which was moved to Studio B during the construction of the new set in Studio A, will stay in B for use in the productiion of WIIH-TV's spanish language newscast. WIIH-Tv is WISH-TV's sister station (for non-Indy readers).
Some other good points:
Weather area is too "shiny"
The monitor used during traffic is small. However, I don't think it was
intended to show the problems areas, they take a full shot of the traffic
graphic for that...or use the greeen wall.
WTHR-TV probably does have the better look, but that's because Dispatch pours more money into their Indy station than does LIN into 8. However, content is king...and 8 blows away 13 for pure news content day in and day out.
For a "news show" 13 wins, but for a "newscast," with content, 8 kicks butt.
With that said, I think 13 sells short the news consumers of Central Indiana.
I'd much rather be informed with solid news and information rather than dazzeled by flash and cash.
I couldn't believe it when, recently, I saw a clip on WTHI's Web site and saw that they are using the same set (facelifted) they had when I lived in TH -- that was the early 90s! It was a really nice set then; it led the market bigtime. But today? C'mon, LIN, spend some money on that property!
Anyway, the "Back Home Again" signature really worked on the custom theme and on their version of Counterpoint. But when they tried to make it fit In-Sink, it just didn't work. Not for me, anyway.
LIN is spending money on WTHI-TV. Emmis let it languish, and LIN is starting to clean up the mess. For example, they got a new graphics package for the first time in like 10 years after LIN bought the station...

Probably to everyone's suprise, WRTV Channel 6 won the AP Award for "Best Newscast" this week. They do a good job with their 24/7 News Station and their actual newscasts are looking really good.
