WISL AM - Shamokin

I have read recently where the FCC has declared "The Whistle"- WISL AM in Shamokin-officially "DEAD" !
The license was cancelled and the call letters were deleted.I believe it had been silent for a number of years. This announcement brought to mind the number of AM stations in the area that have gone silent.
Besides WISL,there are :

WGSA- EPHRATA 1320
WQIN- LYKENS 1290
WMBT- SHENANDOAH 1530
WMIM- MOUNT CARMEL 1590
WSCR- SCRANTON 1320
WHLM BLOOMSBURG 550

Regards

I can understand the top-of-the-dial daytimers in small, depressed towns going under, and the loss of WGSA was the result of some unusual circumstances, but what was the story on 550 in Bloomsburg? Who would voluntarily give up that kind of radio real estate? Or was it a real estate issue of another sort, that the land on which the transmitter sat was more valuable than the radio station itself. Anyone remember what happened there?

the land was of more value than the station. they looked to give the place away
for free......but.......you need to find your own tower site. i believe 4 towers...
price of land....good luck!!

That's an interesting story, but it doesn't explain why the new owners took 550 dark. I presume they did not own the land, just the license. Did the Magee family later sell the land to a shopping center developer or in some way develop it themselves? Just curious how a full-time AM station on 550 would be worth so little.

About finding another tower site for four towers: I'll bet it would have been more than four towers. Don't you get screwed if you vacate an old site for a new one, since you lose your grandfathered status and thus have to protect other stations on the frequency that you didn't have to protect before?

Not just 4 towers, but 4 big honkin sticks, I believe someone told me they were close to 900 ft each. A half wave on 550 is 850ft, so it may be true. AS for WISL, it was just a matter of the FCC catching up to them, they've been darks for years. I visited the tower site last year--My God, what a relic! 3 incredibly rusty self-supporters and one guyed w/a 6-bay FM (I guess the old 99.7) leaning noticeably to the south. The building was empty, just a busted phone and some wire, even the door was gone. It also looked like the copper feeds had been stripped. WIsh I had taken photos, I had no camera with me. I think at least 2 of the sticks show up on Google Earth and I plan to get up there ASAP for photos---it actually was scary to stand under them, they were that bad.

I managed that station several years back, after signing it back on.
A guy out of Quakertown, PA owned the license. Didn't care about it at all.

Had a lot of potential; but, an owner that should have been more concerned than he was.

The transmitter site had (at the time) four towers (only one decent tower), one ATU, high weeds and trees, and even I replaced that door twice during my stint.

Would love to see WISL resurrect someday.

Tim WGSA Ephrata was on 1310, 4 tower directional with the main lobe WEST into Harrisburg, believe it was called "Fire 1310" before it went off sometime in the 70's, WHLM-550 was on ALOT of property which I'm sure was worth more then the station, a 4 tower system at that frequency takes up alot of space. I was sorry to see WMBT go off, had a great time working with the people there doing the engineering. Who knows, maybe something would come back one of these days!

Well, I suppose it is finally time to mourn the passing of a once legendary station in the shamokin area. I've been wondering had happened to it. YOu see, I too had cut my teeth, along with a few fingers in the hollowed halls of WISL! Can't say I'm surprised by it...that station was doomed from the start since being sold to CC back in 2000.

Before that it was a strong full service station for more than 50 years. But after after a failed attempt to bring back the AM powerhouse back in 2002. In fact, I was hired there by radioboss, and after just serving my internship at another local Fm station was hired as News Director of WISL.

So you can see the career ladder was missing a few steps. But, I was just pleased to be working in radio at the time. In the course of about 30 days, I was recommended to take over as the GM of this up start station. With no budget and no idea what direction ownership wanted to take the station I took over the reigns of running it...I mean what was the worst that could happen...right?

Well I made the mistake of hiring people that I knew to help with sales and I shouldn't hold anything against them because we really had no product to sell..I mean, the station was sometimes on the air and sometimes not..in the early days of the "resurge". In fact, most days while I was the ND, I had to go out to the TX site to turn the damn thing on, then head in to the sation to do the news. That was fun for like a minute!

Plus, trying to contact the owner was something of a mystery..sometimes he answered sometimes he didn't..check that..MOST times he didn't...This guy was a real nut....he told us that he had a "station vehicle" for us to use..but he used it to get around not us! Then, the issue of pay came into light when the staff and I waited for alomst 90 days until we recieved payment for our services. Not to mention allt he technical problems that were addressed by me but never resolved...of course what's a GM supposed to do when you cannot make a decision without getting ownership approval...Has anyone else ever had to pay staff with the Petty cash? umm yeah that's how we did it for a while....!!!!!

We had a contract with ABC oldies affilliate but the never came to fruition because there wasn't an automation system in place to operate in corectly..it was on the air for 2 weeks..and when they would break in with what Nat'l spots to remove from the rotation...well that went over the air ..pretty much everything went over the air .....except for a legal ID...thank god no one took the station seriously so no one listened....cept for the CC country station down the hall..but they turned a blind eye to us.

This was my first venture in radio and I can say that I must be really dedicated to the craft because anyone else would have ran for the hills and said nevermind but I pressed on and after several failed attempts at other Am'ers i landed with Citadel and finally feel like I'm at a working station.....

I have more stories about the ownership at WISL that would amaze you at how we mananged to stay on the air physically and legally....but I said enough for one post!!!!

Dave ..WMBT played a role in the 1963 Sheppton mine rescue.Three miners were trapped in a mine shaft for a number of days.( only two were rescued). After a bore hole was drilled to the shaft,I believe WMBT placed a mic down the hole and made verbal contact with two of the miners. I have always enjoyed listening to WMBT on my way to Hazleton. Regards..... Tim

wmbt what a great place to work! it was my first job in radio back in the 60s.
you are right on the sheppton mine ...they broadcast wall to wall for
days. tapes of the coverage are around somewhere.

And you know whats funny about the last person that 'owned' WISL, he was an engineer and did work for a number of stations! From what it sounds like, he didn't put anything back into it at all! What a shame to see those stations go, someone could have done something by tieing 1590/1530/1290/1480 together and covering that whole area. And the last time I was in Mt Carmel, the old WMIM tower was still up (about 300 feet!), but that was about 10 years ago.

WISL Calls may be dead but AM is Shamokin is not over yet. As for there tower site only the 3 self supporters are still standing the single stick with the 6 bay fm antenna on it is down and the fm antennas gone, the building has been burned to nothing.. If any one is intrested in seeing the remains http://www.eaglebdcasting.com/wislpics there are alot of hi-res pics, so it takes awhile to load. I have some to post for WMIM's tower site also. YES that stick is still standing tall, and in the process of going active again (we hope) during the next AM window..

The reason 550 WJMW Bloomsburg died is because the lease was never renewed for the land the towers were on Magee's were no longer intrested in having the 4 huge peices of metal standing around anymore. "Radio Friendz" never found another tower site and returned the license to the FCC.

As for the WISL if anyone takes a trip to the tower site right now there are currently 3 campers & tarps everywhere. Looks like a campground!!!

If anyone has any old info regarding WISL or WMIM please contact me off list [email protected] We are looking to bring these stations back to what they once were, 1480 being OLDIES & 1590 is up in the air..

I don't think I would park my camper anywhere near those sticks.

The old 6 bay FM was probably used for WISL-FM 95.3, before it was sold off to become WSPI around 1980.

WHLM AM at 550 was known as WJMW in it's last ten years. It simulcast 106.5 until 1988 and then went standards from reel to reek, classic country, then talk and The Music of Your Life. 550 went off the air in November of 1999. What a signal they had!

WQIN was in Lykens. I had lived just 2 miles from the transmitter. The station was on market Street in Lykens and the transmitter was about a mile west of Lykens.

Funny,
Here I am in Georgia, but was just speaking yesterday, with a friend from Bloomsburg and informed that WHLM is on the air. The FCC data certainly says so. BUT. . . it's now licensed at 2 KW on 1 tower and on 930kHz. I seem to recall the Ephrata station using 3 towers on 1310. I remember working on a church sound system a few blocks away and installing RF chokes all over the place to kill the unwanted 1310 audio.

Here is info regarding the Sheppton mine disaster mentioned in an earlier post. WMBT's Phil Margush was a major player in the rescue, as shown in this Radio World article. Also, here's a link to a video of the actual rescue. I remember watching the rescue on live TV in the middle of the night.

WHLM at 550 changed calls to WJMW in 1988. They left the air in 1999. WHLM-FM at 106.5 changed calls to WFYY in 2001. The 930 frequency was bought in 2001 and the WHLM calls resurfaced on that frequency where they remain today. WHLM-FM returned on 103.5 in 2006 when the owner purchased that frequency. the previous calls were WKAB. Both stations have separate programming.
