WIST Flipped

Long time lurker here,

It seems like WIST flipped to an easy-listening format. Ever since the football game (Vikes I think) ended yesterday, they're carrying a DJ-less network feed with over a dozen different promos, such as:
"The music and singers that defined "cool" - 690, WIST"
"The station playing the greatest music ever made, the mighty 690, WIST"
"Broadcasting from the heart of the French Quarter, you're listening to the mighty 690, WIST, New Orleans"
"The unforgettable sound of 690, WIST, New Orleans"

It sounds just like the old WWIW and WBYU "Music of Your Life" before they started heavy rotation of 70's & 80's, right before they started simulcasting snake-oil commercials for two years.

I, for one, am enjoying hearing music on my old tube AM sets again. I don't really think I'll miss Asher & Johnson's blowhard shows. :D

WIST's website hasn't been updated, and they are still webcasting.

And ever since they rebuilt their towers after Katrina, I'm regularly picking up the "Mighty 690" up here in East Texas. But I'm happy they flipped to standards, music on the AM beats any news/talk format. ;D

And you won't have to! Those shows remain Noon to 6pm as "New Orleans' Talk Block", according to the website.

Over/under for how long those last? For as long as the contracts say so or a buyout?

"WIST...And We Love You!"
;D

Good to see The Mighty 690 get back to the basics...and a time when The Music Mattered. 8) Some tunes they play are also reminiscent of WTIX 690's Top 40 era; I just heard Brenda Lee's "I'm Sorry" not long ago.

Welcome back, Funloving 690. You've got taste. ;)

I had heard that WIST was going all sports but i guess that isnt the case. So tell me yyou huys any other format vhanges lurking about or any potential bombshell announcements we should be looking for? :-\

Typical bonehead WIST move: cut loose your two highest rated programs (Boortz and Savage), the two programs that generate the bulk of your billing, and keep Eric and Kaare who've never had more than a 1.2. Kaare's been on for 2 years, Eric 2 and 1/2 and neither has been able to build an audience.

Maybe WGSO will pickup Boortz and Savage and finally show up in the book. My guess is it won't be long before Savage ends up on WRNO, probably 9P-Mid.

Mancow was way overpriced for what he brought to the table. They should have cut him and Kaare and moved Savage back to PM Drive (of course, Savage's audience is a lot younger than the Unforgettable Crowd).

Another knee jerk reaction. I'm sure they spent ZERO dollars doing any research to see if there was a hole for standards and any ad dollars for standards.

Well I'm impressed. Thats the second station in the 600 to 700 AM band to take a chance at a music format going back to AM radio in SE Louisiana. I hope this experiment works for George.

Pegged this one...now it's time to bring back the WTIX-AM calls...

I definately agree. ;D

Yeah, I saw that today...oh well...

Maybe in the long run they'll find some folks like Jay Richards (r.i.p.) and Bob Middleton to add some local flavor to the music format.

KTIB 640 Thibodaux is running a mix of oldies and talk currently....

actually I figured if WIST would have done music, it would have been a older oldies (ones shyed away from by demographers) and talk than standards (as it was tried on 106.1 and failed) but yeah hopefully it works for him...

But this means it looks like I'll have to keep up my wish for classic rock on Am again :p (It's been done in South Louisiana once for a year, and for some time after Katrina)

Let me Guess KMRC 1430 THE DAWG
Would have loved to catch KXOR on 1490 KJIN. That would have been cool.

Sounds practically identical to the old 1450 AM. I think they should have chosen oldies.

They haven't, they're running off of one tower.

 So I guess they have emergency FCC authorization? That should have been repaired by now. Little wonder I'm picking them up here.

Get used to picking them up over there. The application for a nighttime site across the Lake as been joined by an app for 8KW non-directional daytime from the current site. Pretty slick.

Any truth to the rumor that Dan Frazier has left the building?

when I called to yell into the phone about the changes, the only person who would speak with me was some guy named Tom Gendro or something. What a waste of a signal with the dead people music. I still like asher and johnson but who knows how long they can last with a audience over 100 yrs old

If WWL DaBig 870 wants to improve their ratings, they need to recruit Asher and Johnson to their award winning SPORTS TALK. Bringing back Kenny Wilkerson would not hurt either.
Another thing-next Saints season, have Eric Asher and Kaare Johnson host DA POINT AFTER.

Yeah, WWL needs the whopping .4 that Eric and Kaare get with their Saturday sports show. Let's take their 200 person audience and move it to Afternoon Drive on WWL.

Axe - I hope you were being facetious. If not, that's the best laugh I've had this month.

Now, Kenny Wilkerson, that's another story.
