WISX leaning even more modern!

WISX as of yesterday, has been spinning almost all newer music (2000-2012). Mostly stuff you would hear on WIOQ or WPST.

Think this has to do with the PPMs? I haven't heard a single 90's song in the six hours I listened today.

Or could it be WBEB playing less current music the past few days?

I must say, I'm liking it more now.

WISX has seemingly been an evolving station for the past two years. The amazing thing is their ratings seems to stay consistent in the 2.6-3.2 range. The demos will tell the real story, but my guess is they are protecting Q's upper demos from B101. They want to be the other preset for Q102's listeners who are looking for something slightly less modern and urban but still playing all the big hits.

While I beleive its possible the thought that 106.1 protecting 102.1 kind of makes me smile. I still remember the Radio War between WEGX and WIOQ from 1989 to 1992. THat was some rivalry. I still remember the phrase "Making a duck out of the Eagle" and "The Eagle is Extinct" For the most part it was Q102 taking shots at Eagle 106 but it was interesting that Mr. Voice Mark Driscoll at Q102 ended up at the Eagle for a short period of time right before the format change. The interesting thing is that the format change had nothing to do with Q-102 taking ratings from WEGX as I think their battle pretty much ended in a draw though I could be mistaken.

Yes, I'm pretty sure what's going on is what Dan said.

After all, yes.com shows almost no difference in the Q102(WIOQ)/PST/Mix 106.1 (WISX) playlists.

At the time of Eagle's format change, Q102 was basically an Urban station, in competition with Power not Eagle.

When Q and Eagle did sound similar, Q was always ahead of Eagle by a few places in the Arbitrons. Of course, both ended up getting away from CHR by the end of 1991, so I would call it a draw. Eagle went to more of an Adult CHR/Hot AC ("No Rap, No Hard Stuff") while Q went Urban ("Peace On The Streets"). Neither station forced the other out- they were both forced to change by Dance/Pop music's declining popularity.

When Eagle finally did flip to WJJZ, it was because of declining ratings outside of mornings. The "Nut Hut" was #3 in mornings at the time of the flip, but the rest of the day was #15 or worse.

@Slinky: A Top 3 (or better) morning show on a station with music programming generating weak ratings for the rest of the day... Can you say "the Stern effect"? ???

More interesting was the pre-Lander, they were doing well in the rest of the day except mornings. They flip-flopped in that regard in the ensuing few years.

Anyway… Nostalgia aside -

What are your thoughts on ISX leaning so modern as to it's more of a CHR then the CHR WSTW in Wilmington?

This is a common tactic that CC uses. They tend to flank successful stations in a market together. Usually one skews slightly older so that listeners naturally "graduate" to that one as they advance in the age demos.

Some examples...WJMN/WXKS-FM in Boston. Jam'n 945 is the rhythmic CHR (think Wired) and Kiss 108 (Q-102) tack very close together, and they tweak their music so they are complimentary, often sharing songs and artists. Kiss does very well with 25-54, Jam'n rules 12-24 and they share the rest. A similar dynamic is in place between Z100 and WKTU/New York, except that WKTU is the older demo station. It looks like that's what they're trying to do with Q and Mix.

One of the most fascinating things is WISX's mixshows. They actually air the Remix Top 30, something that should arguably be on Q102. In addition, their Saturday night mixshow is more aggressive with dance than anything on Q102!

It's a really interesting Hot AC for sure.

Speaking as someone that runs the Remix Top 30 and knows the host, the show is designed for Hot AC.

Add to it, that ISX ins't afraid to play EVERYTHING. Hard Rock, Country, Pop, Rap, Dance - all with it being within the realm of 2000-2012. The PD at this station deserves some serious praise.

I say they rename 106 to KISS-FM 106.1, make it the top40 for Philly, and make Q102 the more adult... hits from the past station. Older people who grew up listening to Q102 would love making it their preset again.

How so exactly?

A pointless exercise. Play the music the audience wants and they'll listen.

Also, the newer imaging on WISX sounds like a CHR (the shorter imaging, not the 90's, 2k and Today voice)

I think he meant the format that is more commonly known as Rhythmic AC or Rhythmic Hot AC. Most typical Hot ACs wouldn't touch that show.
