With "Classic Country" gone from 98.3, could it's next stop be 1320?

Now that WIST 98.3 has made the switch to spanish, could the "Classic Country" format wind up at WCOG 1320?,
keep in mind they are owned by Curtis Media Group and maybe should pick up this format and make it similar to
WQDR-AM 570 in Raleigh.

I continue to agree that somebody needs to do a Classic Hits format in the Triad. There is a strong and supportive audience available for the format. It does not appear this will happen since WIST is not Hispanic and WBRF will never give up thier bluegrass @($U@#$(*!

If the the format didn't work on FM with a marginal signal, why would it work on an AM with a signal worse than the FM? I think the market has spoken. Curtis would be better off putting oldies on 1320 and attempting to revive the heritage (if there is any) of WCOG. A lot of people in Greensboro & Guilford County grew up listening to All American 1320 WCOG and all the other monikers it was known for over the years. Its my understanding the station is dark and anything other than religion would be better than it being silent.

They have the infrastructure for classic country now, at 570. Classic hits would take more buildout. They don't have to blow up the ratings and change the history of the world, they are likely shooting more for "profitable."

I think several other [FM] stations hit around the "classic hits" hole, so there would probably be too much format overlap for an AM almost-daytimer to stand out.

You guys are forgetting that the Spanish people are also getting WBLO the Sports station and I doubt they'll keep it Sports. I think 1320 will be doing Sports-Talk. I have already heard rumors that several AM stations in the area will be simulcasting Sports-Talk. It has to be Curtis and it would be a great compliment to their News-Talk stations.

What other stations does Curtis have in the Triad?
Isn't it only WSJS/WMFR/WSML/WCOG?
If they simulcast sports-talk on those, then there aren't any news-talk stations to complement.

More power to them if they bring back Matt & TJ though. That was the high point of Triad sports talk. And mix in Andy Durham somewhere. :)

Sports Talk in the Triad probably wouldn't work because the market is too large to key in on the high school market. Greensboro-focused and Winston-focused stations could gain respective audiences. The teams rarely cross the county lines, so coverage shouldn't try to mix it up either.

You would never base an all sports station on high school sports! The right talent, with a good knowledge of tobacco row college sports and the pros could make it here for, maybe a two-hour sports show - of maybe a PM drive sports show.

Friday night HS football can make some money (and since it is after 6PM it can't really hurt the ratings). Just have to know how to sell it! Back in Raleigh, we sold a "game of the week" sponsorship to Winn Dixie. Made good money from that deal, and then mopped up the gravy with individual game sponsors.

We had interns that handed out grocery coupons at every game. W/D loved it.

To me the logical thing would be for WCOG to do what WKIX is doing. After all, they were both top 40 once. And what I've heard of WKIX sounded good.

But I hope they do classic country because I doubt WBRF will be satisfactory.

As for classic hits, Simon has that covered. Maybe I haven't listened enough, but every time I have they played something from the 70s, 80s or 60s. Some of the 80s material isn't "oldies", but the station is definitely sounding different these days.

Sports is a much better option for them and it's smart that they're doing a network.
