With The New Format Change Is Houston Missing Anything

With the new format change is there any format that houston is missing that you would like to have in houston.

All right - I'll beat the dead horse.

Not including the Loop (KKRW - HD2), what Houston is missing is an AAA station - and I don't mean roadside rescue, either.

ditto...why can't Houston have a KPIG or a KGSR...thank goodness for XM Deep Tracks...

AAA has only been successful in medium size/college/liberal markets (i.e. Austin). It's failed when it's been tried in large markets.

I'm thinking a station that plays only Texas Music could do well in Houston. Even a rimshot station like 97.5 would work great, maybe even better than a full strength Houston signal. With a combination of Houston/Golden Triangle they might suprise some folks.

It would have to be strictly Texas music, and no Nashville based bands. I think that was the biggest reason for KIKK's failure. They tried to mix the two genres. As much as some people think they are the same, they really aren't.

Houston is missing an All News station, a Business News-Talk station, an Adult Standards station, which might do better than most people would tend to believe. Adult Standards has been picking up an increasing audience on internet radio in the 18 to 35 year old age group, many that have not been exposed to a true Adult Standards station except on the internet. Houston has not had a real Adult Standards station since the old KQUE 102.9 days and that was some years ago. KBME 790 was a poorly executed hybred on AM. It would have to be on FM as music on AM is not going to work in Houston with any success. The only viable FM station that might change formats is 106.9 The Point and I find a flip to Adult Standards highly unlikely. I could see Cox riding out their miserable rating in the one's for some time yet.

Other missing formats AAA, Progressive Talk and Christian Rock.

I would not expect to hear any of the above formats in Houston anytime soon, unfortunately.

The slight hope is Clear Channel will put Sports on 790 out of it's misery as a distant runner up to CBS's Sports on 610 or KTRH 740 continues it's fall in the two ratings and CC decides to resurrect the All News format that at one time brought the station number one ratings. CC's other AM station KPRC is doing worse than KTRH having slid down to the mid two's and still dropping. The Spring Book comes out today, the 25th and we'll see how the trio fare.

Unfortunately, I believe the Sports Animal is here to stay. They supposedly hired some guy named Davie for the morning show. God, that station is so lifeless compared to 610...The only good programs are Charlie Pallilo and the overnight guy Sedano...all the other shows are bottom feeders.

The following station would work in Houston if the powers at be can resist polluting the playlist with Nashville based country bubble gum pop.

Texas Radio: Texas Mix 98.7 from Victoria, Texas

Reckless Kelly
Wayne "The Train" Hancock
Junior Brown
Kelly Willis

Are you drooling yet.... Houston is starved for some home-cooked music!

This might be a last gasp attempt for 97.5. Coverage area is right for the intended demographics, similar to what 97.1 has. Include B/PA in the marketing.

Otherwise take 97.5 Christian Rock or Asian. Almost has to do better than what is being done now.

Mike mentions: "Other missing formats AAA, Progressive Talk (clip)" AAA variations seem to work in Ultra-Liberal cities, like SF, but Progressive Talk? As in Radio America? That depressing, Bush-bashing crap has failed monumentally all over the nation. Might as well tune in some communists who admit what they are, like on Pacifica....

IMO, news radio is dead.

When most folks want the news, they simply go to the news websites. Many folks can even do it from a device like a Blackberry or Treo.
