Wither WEOL?

Recent mentions of classic WEOL have me wondering what's going on there now? Do they have any local programs anymore? What happened to Craig Adams and their news? Are there rumors of a sale or anything that would put them back in the local service mode they did so well for years?

I saw that WABQ has a CP to move to I-90 in Mentor with a non-D 500 watts day and 54 night. Has that happened yet? And what about 1000 AM?
(Ironically, I heard that the original WPVL 1460 was a one tower 500 watt daytimer. Some old timers said they had a better signal back then before the DA-2 4-tower array which I assume is either gone or going soon.)

And speaking of WPVL 1460, their longtime sports director and local play by play voice, Bill Starkey, passed away recently. He was in his mid-90's and had been with 1460 for more than 50 years, a true local legend.

They have a low-power FM repeater, which covers roughly the same fairly limited area as the AM, which increases the value. I don't know who would buy such a station these days, except EMF or some other religious outfit.

Basically, all their local programming except for high school sports coverage was eliminated with the new year. The only current local show is a Sunday morning public affairs show to meet FCC requirements (the bare minimum).

It says a lot when there was practically no media coverage whatsoever. Not even the Chronicle-Telegram, which owns the station, had any story on this.

100.3 is miniscule with 25 watt ERP and only covers Grafton reliably. They wanted the signal to be bigger but WNIR kept (and keeps) objecting to any plan they put out.

EMF doesn't buy AM stations unless they are forced to, and with the exception of 1520 in Toledo, the ones they buy are sold off in a hurry.

During Morning Drive, WEOL still does the local "Champions of Education" segment. They also continue having local weather done by Jon Loufman in Morning Drive, and beyond. I think there is/are one, or more, other locally produced segments that they air.

IIRC the "Champions of Education" is a sponsored segment via the Nord Foundation and probably runs through the school year. Loufman also does weather reports for WKFM/WLKR.

And it looks like they have fully removed Daliah Wachs after her syndicator GCN shut down. Their schedule has them now carrying Fox Sports Radio from noon to 10pm, including Colin Cowherd.

Wouldn't be surprised to eventually see WEOL take FSR on full-time.

The "Dr. Dahlia" show has moved to another syndicator (Talk Media Network). It is now, only 2 hours long and is posted to an FTP site which means that it would have to be downloaded and played the next day. I also notice that Michael Medved, whose show I enjoyed when it was on WHK, is/was also available. Given that with local programming, WEOL is sports-centric, adding Mr. Cowherd is a reasonable choice.

It was years ago, but I got into some Twitter dispute with Mr. Cowterd when he decided to interject himself into some conversation I was having with someone else. Decided it'd be neat to slam me and my "loser radio 'career' and I was probably fired from every station I worked at". Basically shut him down with the fact that I left radio of my own accord before he was even born and the only thing we have in common that if you mention my name and his in the same sentence, 99% of the people would say "Who?" and eventually even he will be "On the beach" and probably NOT of his own accord. He clammed up after that.

to further expand on this.. theres a show that KSKO carries, "the car doctor with ron ananian" that is offered live on satellite to stations, but at least a few of us, me included, take the download.

One station airs the show segments starting an hour after the live airing ends...the files are uploaded as CARDOC1.wav, CARDOC2.wav and so on each week.. the stations who take it automaticlaly with no human interaction just download automatically from dropbox and the automation ingest sees the download and sucks it up.. including the station who airs it an hour after the live show.

I manually download it, strip the commercials out and then insert it manually.

I asked Dr. Daliah Wachs via DM why WEOL was airing pre-recorded shows (this was before WEOL dropped the show). She stated that she was recording the 2-hour show and sending it up no later than 11am ET until further notice so that it would be available for those affiliates who normally air it at 12pm ET, She's planning to get the RSS feed to TalkStreamLive (which is still carrying the GCN feed) so that she can go live at 12pm ET. At this moment I listen to the podcasts, which are uploaded later in the day.

I first became aware of Dr. Daliah on "Pawn Stars", as she would go to the pawn shop every now and then and try to sell the guys various offbeat and antique medical gadgets/paraphernalia

Not true. Go drive around and listen to where it comes in. Far more than just Grafton. Remember, they are 25 watts, but at nearly 700 feet AAT.

One thing I noticed on the Cleveland Ind......ummm, Guardians broadcast on WTAM/WAKR is the ton of local business' advertising. So maybe WEOL has no sales people left to go out knocking on doors to get said local advertisers so they gave them up? I assume there's also some cost they may have to pay that may or may not be cheap to broadcast the Guardians games. I'm sure their pocketbook's a little lighter than, say, ihurtradio's. They may also be thinking "Hey, is anybody REALLY listening to us for the Tribe games?" when there's a couple of mega-wattage stations broadcasting the games covering a lot more area then they do.

There are a number of affiliates that fall within the signal of the flagship. And probably most listening is to the flagship station. So it isn’t as much about listenership as it is advertising $$&. There are a lot of smaller advertisers who want to be affiliated with the sports team and the local affiliate has rates affordable to them. . Some are sports nuts. I know of one such business owner. We call him coach. His advertising is almost just a vanity play. But he can be counted on to advertise on whatever sports team is being aired.
