WIXV: Savannah's most powerful station?

I've been making several trips to Atlanta lately, and have noticed that on a consistant basis, I've been able to carry WIXV up to about 10 miles east of Macon while driving up I-16 with good clarity. Matter of fact, I've carried it farther west than other Savannah FM's that have higher power & higher transmitter elevation (102.1, 97.3, 94.1 come to mind). So what's the deal? Superior engineering? Does the 95.5 frequency "carry farther"?

Speaking of Macon, there's a relatively new stick next to I-16 near the other four tall towers. It's strobe lit, unpainted & appears to have 2 FM's & a DTV antenna on top. Who's located on this tower?

Also, I've have noticed this under different atmospheric conditions (sunny, cloudy, rainy)

The Savannah station that I receive most regularly here in Macon is 93.1 WEAS. After that, probably WIXV (which I'll always remember as "The Rock Lobster", from many years ago).

Stainless stick on I-16

This tower is about 7-8 years old and hosts FM 99 WDEN, a non-comm on 88.9 or so and digital television channel 45, WGNM. I think a cell antenna is also up there, too.

AFAIK The WEAS Tower is actually in Springfield about 20 miles west of Savannah and is 99k. So it should actually carry further than the others in Sav or the CCs in Garden City. Last time I read that 97.3 and 94.1 Share a Tower and that neither are pushing a true 100k. Can someone either confirm or deny this?

93.1, 94.1 and 97.3 are all on the same tower, the TV -28 tower. The antenna for WEAS is approx 1100 feet. WAEV and WQBT share an antenna around 1400'. The tower for WIXV, WZAT and WJCL-FM is about 1/4 mile from the TV-28 tower, basically right across the street. WIXV's antenna is around 1000'.

Remember there are many things that can be involved when measuring the signal strength of a station at a far distance. Height of the antenna, the frequency of the station, distance of another station on the same frequency, type of antenna, size of antenna, etc. , etc.

On paper, WIXV is the second-least powerful station in that west Chatham tower farm behind WLVH 101.1. But 95.5's signal seems to go the longest. When I was on A1A in Ponte Vedra Beach, 95.5 and 96.5 were booming in better than the more powerful Orlando stations only 80 miles away!

I think the best signal goes to WGZR 106.9, which is up about 800' on that tower in Bluffton with 106.1, 103.1, 107.9. They can be picked up from the GA/FL border to north of Charleston.

I think it's the engineering and signal. I-95 puts out a quality product. I've noticed they come in stronger, and it just sounds better. I'm not sure what they're doing but it works and works well. They've always been a solid station and just gets better and better each year!

That may have something to do with the proximity the stick has to the ocean. It seems that oceanside towers can send their signals over longer distance. I recall picking up 106.1 down in Orange Park FL with little trouble. 98.3 seems to also benefit from a coastal tower location in McIntosh Co, allowing it not only to be hear all up & down the FL/GA/SC coast, but well inland up I-16 as well.

The "old" 99.7, back when her stick was on St. Helena's Island, really carried far!

Gator has a great signal, all the way up on 17 almost to Georgetown (just 30 miles or so S of Myrtle), before the 107.1 in Myrtle interferes. During the summertime, I picked it up well in Daytona Beach (with just a walkman), but it was direct LOS to the water.

About 75%-80% of the time, I can get Kix 96 and Kiss just S of Charleston, mixed in with Wilmington and Fayetteville, NC respectively.

That 99.7 had the best signal, before it moved to Charleston. You could hear it clearly in both Savannah and Charleston, and carried all the way down to Fernandina Beach with some interference, as they had regular listeners that far S (Andy Thomas noted it on his talk show).

Many of the Charleston stations carry all the way to Ridgeland on 95, and during the summer, they are regular signals in the SAV area (almost all stations, except maybe 105.5). All of the Savannah stations carry very easily into Charleston during the summer, even the weak ones (like 100.1).

Gotta love those summer skywaves, especially on the coast. I wonder, though, if the relatively quiet sunspot cycle will affect reception one way or the other. I should think the lack of atmospheric ionization would inhibit long-distance reception even during summer.

Honestly, I've always though that 97.3 (WAEV's) signal was always the strongest....(where are they located)? Because I can often times drive in and around Augusta, North Augusta, SC (and one time, going well into the midlands of South Carolina towards Aiken and Bamberg and can usually get a strong signal for "Kiss FM" in Savannah.

I noticed this as well, Savannah has massive signals, maybe due to the water and flat terrain. I carried 95.5 to at least 3 miles from Macon, then 95.5 Atlanta starting bleeding in. Also 98.3 is huge, ;D
