Wiz ends early

NBC just finished its annual Live musical The Wiz. But I noticed that for some reason it ended 15 minutes early. I don't know if there was a specific reason for it, but WHDH in Boston filled the gap with extended Local news coverage, primarily the California attacks. But this was obviously just local. I'm curious to know what other NBC affiliates did to fill in that void.

A bunch of them, like WTMJ in Milwaukee took up a junket special piped in from the NBC newswire where behind-the-scenes and aftershow stuff was shown for the remaining 15 minutes augmented by a couple of news anchors talking about the show with members of the local theatrical community. There probably wasn't enough in the musical's book to fill up much more than two hours plus the commercials and NBC couldn't really stretch much more beyond that.

Program guide for Dish listed it as 7:00 to 9:45 in the tape-delayed Denver-Central time zone. Southern Colorado got an extra 15 minutes of local news from KOAA 5. Wished we could have seen the junket special shown in Milwaukee and other markets.

We in the Mountain and Pacific time zones never get to see the live versions of entertainment specials like last night's "Wiz", the annual Emmys (who cares), the Oscars (ditto), or regular shows like SNL, American Idol, and The Voice. Ironic because most of the productions are produced live on the West Coast for the Eastern and Central time zones. Not a big deal really. We just miss out on the blasphemous and lecherous burps.

No such hiccups or tics that I could detect with last night's production of "The Wiz". Unlike NBC's last two attempts at live musicals, which were painful to watch, I stayed with The Wiz the entire 2 hours and 45 minutes. They could put this out on DVD and actually have some sales with it. It helps having a largely Broadway cast...

I hadn't watched yet when during "Jeopardy" on WCNC there was a commercial for a show about the undefeated Panthers.

I actually still haven't watched. I made a promise to myself to read newspapers two nights a week and I won't accept any excuses.

I didn't see any credits. I thought they would precede the next program but if they were there I missed them.

It was a great production, though. I don't think there's anything this year that will get criticized.
