WIZE - Anything new?

Burns-

No matter how good of broadcasters they are, they are rejects, period. They got cut with their station. I meant nothing more than that. I myself am a reject of previous places of employment. I have no doubt you are too. Why do you feel you have to defend them? As far as I can tell, they have employment with a radio station... where's the need for defense?

As far as my intelligence level... I'm sorry I can't live up to your levels of an Associate's Degree from the International College of Broadcasting (or am I giving you too much credit?).
SFID-
I take your comments as awesome and thanks for the credit where it be deserved or not...lol. It is irrelevant but funny, thanks for the chuckle. I know both of the people personally and get upset at how people portray people let go from stations for reasons out of their control. Radio is a bitch of a business, and many have been let go for no reason and then others want to say it was their fault and comment on their abilities having not set foot in a studio. That is the thing that stings with me. Since you were in broadcasting, what aspect and what station or stations?? And NO you were not a reject if let go for reasons not your doing. Victim of circumstance, yes reject no.

Lee and Andy will be just fine. They both have gigs. Andy is still in sales with Main Line in Dayton and Lee is doing High School Football with 1340 WIZE. Lee is a veteran in Dayton radio. Andy was with WKSW from '92-'11. Please give it a rest guys. No need to take things personally...and when did ANYONE mention that you three that started this war or words were rejects? Go take a chill pill and calm down.

Now that we've cleared out the Kiss Country fans from "Darwin's Waiting Room"... how about answering my original question. Is anyone from CC Dayton putting any effort into making WIZE a viable radio station? Are any of the AE's selling over there? Any billboards? Or other marketing for the station?

I'm sorry, but taking a station with WIZE's heritage, and changing it to country, is, well.... stupid.

And by the way, in the late 80's / early 90's, I am fairly certain that Jerry Staggs tried to buy WKSW, preset #1 in his Acura. Jerry always hated the "rock music" played on WIZE. ::)

WIZE's heritage is so old (it hasn't until recently been independent of WONE since 1994) a generation or more has passed since the WIZE heyday in the 70s. Dream all you like, but the WIZE of that era isn't coming back even if someone tried. WPTW is on it's last gasp as far as that goes.

I would love to see WIZE return as locally originating in Springfield....but you and I have learned from previous posts that's not going to happen...but at least Lee Riley and his colleague is giving WIZE some sort of local presence with high school sports and I commend him for that. With that said let's focus on the positive things WIZE did.....not the negative stuff that took place there in the 80s and 90s.

Most of you know that Jonathan Winters got his start there.

Many of you others like myself remember its Top forty era...and the powerful voice of John Hall its morning man..an irreplaceable voice we miss....plus Dale Grimm,Jim Baldridge,Gerry Allen,Marty Bannister and John King..they made WIZE larger than life despite its mere 1kw signal....and I'll never forget those WCFL-styled TM jingles that made it sound that way...and made the former WCOM look like a joke before it saw better days as WKSW.

As for WPTW...(if it is indeed breathing its last breath)..let it be said that they didn't give up and it died trying ...it fought the good fight to keep local hometown radio alive. Stanley Coning (God rest his soul) did the same thing...when he had WCTM in Eaton. He and WPTW's original owners Richard Hunt and Oscar Baker also have passed and their era with it...and let's not forget Smilin' Bob at WBLY. Radio was a people buisiness and it was fun back then...a far cry from what it has now been reduced to.

Actually, what I hear from residents up there (multiple ones) is that the call letters are still familiar (and remembered fondly as a Top 40 station)...but no one, and I mean no one has any idea of what they're doing now. Nor, do they listen.

Rumors have been going around (I can't quite confirm it, though) that they recently did a remote at a local venue...showed up in an unmarked van, no identifying markings on the employees such as a station T-shirt...whoever was doing the "remote" never mentioned what radio station they were on-air. The people from a local school who was there with their band told a friend of mine, they have absolutely no idea who that station was, nor what they were doing there.

If it really was WIZE, as I have been told by a few people, someone really needs some guidance on what you do at a remote broadcast...

Do I really have friends up there? I did live in New Carlisle for 15 years...

You have my sympathy... ;)

Sheesh... even when the cheapskates at Great Trails owned WIZE, they had a bright orange 1974 Chevy van for remotes.... And that was in the late 80's. It was a 15 year old van, it stalled at intersections due to a sticky carb, but it looked decent, had the logo on it, and you couldn't miss it. Unmarked van? Those magnetic signs are only $50 or so. CC can't even afford THAT?! It certainly sends a message to the client... morons...

WIZE, when not airing sports, or other local interest programming, should be playing Classic Hits, not country. At least it would match the station's heritage.

I speak from experience when I say that WIZE is a station that can probably bill around $12,000 a month MAXIMUM, and not much more. An owner would need to join the Chamber of Commerce, and attend every single meeting. I can guarantee that none of the AE's at CC Dayton are going to do that. Not to "toot my own horn" but the right owner for WIZE is somebody like ME, not a big corporation like CC.

"Sheesh... even when the cheapskates at Great Trails owned WIZE, they had a bright orange 1974 Chevy van for remotes...."

I still see that van on the S.E. side of Springfield! I know it is the van b/c of the color and the bad attempt to cover up the letters.

To Stereolane. I think it is great you believe in AM radio. I know it is a tough uphill battle to make it on the AM band. I disagree with how a lot people have given up on the band.

You can make money on small market radio. It takes an owner that understands what programming will work and how to sell the station. I have had success on the AM band and have done very well making money not only with the programming but also with several NTR events.

With that being said, you have to make more than $12,OOO a month in billing unless you are going to try to run a one person operation. You have to see if a station has a real potential of billing at least $30 to $35,000 a month plus several NTR events. If it can't than walk alone from the station.

If you ever want to more ahead with running and owning a station let me know. I would love to help anyone who believes in AM radio.

1340 WIZE(Dun dun dun dun DAH!)...Springfield! LOVED that TOH ID back in the 80s. It really is a crying shame what has happened to WIZE over the years, but we will all have great memories of the "Golden era" of WIZE. Of course, John Hall and Gerry Allen are the two voices I remember best listening to 'IZE in the early to mid 80s. In fact, WIZE was the very first radio station I ever listened to, and started my love of radio that has lasted a lifetime.

Thanks - I have owned several stations, all of which were distressed properties when acquired. I've looked at a couple of others recently, but not in Ohio.

I had the great misfortune of being sent to WIZE while working for Great Trails. The days of WIZE billing 30-35K a month are long gone.

Regarding Gerry Allen:

He was a decent news anchor, but his people skills were just about nil. I often wondered if that anti-social, angry personality was the real Gerry, or just a defensive reaction to a hostile work environment.

If anyone is willing to share:

What was the average monthly billing at WULM when they played oldies?

How many employees at WULM?

How many live air shifts?

How many AE's?

How expensive were the utilities for WULM?

How is Springfield's economy now, as compared to 1990? Better or worse?

Thanks in advance to all who can answer.
