WIZE

As I have mentioned here before, WIZE was a great source of frustration for me while working for Great Trails many years ago. There was a lot of untapped potential at WIZE, which had basically become the GT "loonie bin"... being given walking papers by GT brass to report to Springfield was like the Russians sending people to Siberia.

WIZE now seems to be, once again, on perpetual auto-pilot. How can "Your Springfield Station for Country" survive, with no Springfield weather, news, or sports?

Anyone over in Clark County selling spots? ::::crickets::::

Didn't think so. I called this one months ago. Flipping this station to country was nothing short of a boneheaded move. With Nick Gnau heading for motown, the neglect of WIZE will only get worse.

Just sayin' with all due respects.

Few under 50 listen to AM radio anymore. A sad fact, I agree, but true.

Add to it, as Stereolane points out - no local news, no local anything (but maybe the promise of some high school sports...assuming they can find sponsors) and what you have - is what you have.

And that's it.

On the bright side WIZE has a weak pulse while their arch rival from the good old days of Springfield Ohio died a horrible death. And the once great Springfield FM voice got administratively reassigned to Urbana while being programmed from Dayton but at least it lives on.

I have fond memories of Springfield and Clark county but they are just that, memories. :'(

Awhile back, someone here said they spotted the old orange WIZE chevy van sitting somewhere in Springfield. Does anyone recall where?

I don't know if moving WIZE to Classic Country was a boneheaded move. Sure, it's all voice-track and satellite programming or whatever, but before, it was just WONE west. As a Springfield resident, I know of nobody, and I mean nobody, that listened to WONE on WIZE. I've ran into one or two people that listen to WIZE.

I've tuned into WIZE a couple of times since HS football ended. It reminds me of the Clear Channel station I listen to most, "Big 106.5" WDSJ. All automated. However, I listen to it (and Oldies 93.3 out of Columbus) simply to hear real music. Although recently, they've put Dave Alexander on 106.5 on afternoons and do have the local traffic/weather of all other Dayton CC stations. However, I know it's different since WIZE is targeting Springfield itself, while WDSJ is targeting Dayton (and of course comparing a 1K AM to a 50K or whatever FM isn't remotely a fair comparison).

The one thing that gave WIZE any recognition at all after the flip was high school football with WKSW good ole' boys Lee Riley and Gary Little. Springfield Shawnee made a run to the DIII state title game, and WIZE got a lot of listenership during their playoff games.

However, Riley and Littel are on to bigger and better things. They'll be doing games on RTV 32 this fall, which has moved its studios to Springfield. WULM alums Dave Williams and Jim Scoby are going to be doing HS football on WIZE this fall (I predicted last year after the flip that it was only a matter of time before Scoby would be on WIZE, as he did GWOC games on WONE). I personally like Williams and Scoby play-by-play better, but Riley and Littel (Riley especially) were/are more recognizable. It will be interesting to see what kind of listenership they get with Scoby and Williams.

But back to the main point, there's only so much money you can bring in from having HS football and Wittenberg football as your only real local programming. Still, I'm sure it's more money than when WIZE brought in as WONE East.

Thanks for sharing the You Tube clip
Best wishes going out to Lee Riley who is also a great sportscaster.

I remember Lee giving out the "Tab Scoreboard" (pre-Diet Coke product reference) score when he used to do kick-butt PBP of high school basketball forty years ago on WMVR.

Tab is still around. It's sold in Springfield grocery stores.

It IS what it IS—a 1kw "local" on crowded 1340. I always enjoy reading stereolane here, and agree at just-shy of 100-percent of his posts. I LOVED WIZE during its 70s heyday, but that was then and this is now. Honestly, this station should hit the red button on their transmitter for the last time – so-should about 4000 other AM stations including 1600 in Springfield. THEN, maybe the band can be "saved" by creative reorganization. There is NO reasonable expectation that a significant number of 20-somethings will ever visit the 1340 frequency – in-fact there is a major concern that many in that age group don't know how to switch bands [to AM] on their audio device of choice. Even more shocking, is that they CARE-LITTLE about what is presented on the FM band.
I'm watching a serial radio melt-down. I don't like it, but I can honestly say that I'M NOT THE CAUSE!

WIZE is the first radio station I remember listening to back in the early 80s(Around '82). Sad to see what's happened to a once proud heritage station. However, the AM band is dying a slow death(Outside of powerhouse signals like 700 WLW). IMHO, I think the FM band will be around for years and years. Radio has survived the Walkman, the CD, the MP3 player, the iPhone, Pandora, etc.

Hate to tell you this...but few under 40 bother to listen to AM.

That's not shocking, they get their entertainment from anything but a radio. Why listen to a box that plays the same thing over and over and over and over and over?

Why not just put some second and third tier talk shows from premiere on the frequency and forget it. Music on AM is a waste of electricity at this point.

Why would you take it more 2K when no one under 50 listens to AM radio?

It has been proven you can't drag people from FM to AM...except, perhaps at gunpoint. (That's a joke, by the way.)

I thought you suddenly were becoming an Ayn Rand linguist with the gunpoint comment.
