WIZS in Henderson

As a young pre-jay, I went to camp in the summer of 1963 at a camp on Buggs Island Lake near the VA-NC line. The two stations to listen to were WKIX and WIZS (Wonderful Radio Wizz... The Sound of Today!). I'm sure no one here has any WIZS memorabilia or stories... but it never hurts to ask.
They had a funky jingle for a 7-11 store in Henderson (on Garnet St.). Don't believe it was the 7-11 of the national chain.

Oh sure, I remember WIZS/1450AM, chiefly because it seemed like an awfully good top 40 for such a small, backward town, especially with WKIX nearby and available. I can't imagine the station was ever profitable, but maybe I'm wrong. I think they were gone by the late 60s. I've always wondered if WIZS was a "Radio Smiles" station since they operated some pretty good sounding top 40s in small towns in NC durng the 60s...

WIZS is still there and going strong. It was a country outlet, but now mixes the country with oldies and, of course, local talk and news.

I had a beach music radio show there briefly in the 80's when WHNC decided not to do it anymore. Compared to WHNC's facility the place was a real dump. They did not even have a countdown clock. Remember those things.

Since US 98.3 signed on, WIZS-AM has blended Beach and Oldies with Country. In fact, what I hear is a block of Country (about 15 minutes), a stop set, then a block of Beach and Oldies. I am not totally fond of the blended blocks of genre. However, in the face of lots of FM stations in surrounding communities, I guess they are looking for a niche. Their real strong point is their long-standing tradition of covering local news and community service (a daily call-in talk show, a 'Trading Post'-type of show, etc). I do not know what their rate sheet looks like, but they run lots of spots! So, they have business, in contrast to many other stations! So, I have to give it to them...eventhough they are a dwarf among midgets (to quote Peter Griffin), they manage to keep standing among lots of FM stations and keep the lights on!
