WJAR Adding Monday-Saturday 7 PM News

Well, something must warrant WJAR adding a 7 PM newscast - and I'll be surprised if they were indeed inspired by WLNE to do so. Remember, WLNE had to add newscasts at 7 PM and other time slots after losing the right to air "Dr. Phil" and other shows, because they were in the red with CBS Television Distribution.

I will say this... As long as WPRI holds onto "Wheel" and "Jeopardy!" - no, as long as they're still on the air - I don't foresee the "7 PM newscast" craze to take off as rapid as the drive across the country to add a 4:30 AM newscast is.

The news on Saturdays will be followed by a program called "Unreal Deal," which to my interpretation is basically a glorified infomercial...

But as the article points out, Fox Providence/WNAC is also guilty of this with their broadcast of "The Rhode Show." (Gee, brilliant title. :D )

Interesting that Media General is allowing WJAR to do this while in Media General's core region, the South, they have practically stripped all their lower market stations of all their weekend newscasts. Case-and-point, WRBL in Columbus, has no weekend newscasts and hasn't since mid-2009. That's pretty embarrassing for one of the few establish news operations and long time CBS affiliate in that region to have no weekend newscasts at all. Even their larger market NBC stations like WNCN and WVTM are just wobbling along since this company purchased them and fell even further in the ratings heap...

Something going to have to give that this company soon.

For some reason they either are using WJAR as a test market (or) they have amazing faith in this station. Interesting. I hope they revamp their look and music package while they are at it. I can't think of a better time to make such a change.

Shades of 30 years ago! :D

I seem to remember that the newly-renamed WLNE started Action News at 7pm (live from both Downtown Providence and their old New Bedford newsroom). Soon after, WJAR started a newscast "Newswatch 10 at 7pm".

Both newscasts were discontinued about a year later, when WLNE drastically cut back on news (eliminated noon and 7pm newscasts), changed the name to the Channel 6 News, and changed the theme music to the now-infamous Kansas music (that's for you, Skynet74 ;D)

WJAR will be airing a 7 PM newscast tonight, but the guide does not show it as airing during the coming week.

The TitanTV guide also shows something interesting for next Saturday: NBC Nightly News preempted for an hour long 6 PM newscast.

WJAR did do a 7'oclock newcast I believe in the 80's and it flopped bigtime. Now with all 24/7 news cycles.

I hate all those tabloid shows. There only needs to be one." Entertainment Tonight" was the original. Keep that one. Pair it with TMZ for laughs. That's all you really need. Everything else is overkill.

I don't think News in the 7 PM hour is a big sell. The news was just on at 6. It seems redundant.

Honestly, I'd rather have game shows during the 7pm hour. I also hate all those tabloid show -- who cares what some stupid celebrity did?!?

In the internet age, everyone has read all the news online anyway! Unless they took a unique approach and presented a totally different newscast, I'm not sure that it's going to work -- but it might be cheap if they just overwork their existing staff.

Perhaps the loss of "Access Hollywood," which moves to WNAC this fall.

I guess that contact that NBCU had signed for WJAR in 2006 (prior to it being sold off) expires at the end of the summer. Meanwhile, Media General would rather put another infomercial fronting as a newscast on air...

Isn't this supposed to be a real newscast? I thought the infomercial thing was going to be on Saturdays at 7:30pm. Then again, I may be having memory issues... :D

Practically none of the Media General stations have "real newscasts" anymore. The only MG station that sometimes does have a "real newscast" is WFLA-TV these days, but that's their prized flagship so they'll pamper it with all the bells and whistles...

As bad as Media General is (and I know it's bad, having grown up in Richmond VA), they certainly still have a "real" newscast on their Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville station, WSPA-TV, which is their third ranking market (DMA#36), I believe after Raleigh/Durham.

That's because WSPA-TV is one of the original stations of the fold. I personally call WSPA-TV, one of MG's pseudo-flagships, since it still has its own helicopter, Sky 7, and fully staffed newscasts during all the key timeslots. The same can be said about WSLS-TV Roanoke/Lynchburg.
