WJAR adding "RETRO TV NETWORK"

Here in Hanson (Plymouth County) we still get 10, 12, 36, and 64 from Providence on Comcast cable. We lost channel 6 back when WHRC-46 (now WWDP) came back on the air in the late 90s. 46 has since been moved to channel 96, and 6 is now another public access channel.

I guess Hanson is a small enough town, that we're able to go under the radar, keeping most Providence channels. I think Whitman, the next town over, has 6 instead of 12 for some strange reason.

If my TiVo listings are, indeed, correct, WJAR's RTN will launch Monday at 6am.

No sign of RTN on WJAR 10.3, yet. I know a lot of people who are waiting for the activation of 10.3. It might be a tough catch picking up WJAR-DT/51 as their digital signal is currently below par in terms of power and coverage. Unlike WPRI-DT, the signal of WJAR-DT is much weaker. I live about 30 miles from Rehoboth. Both WNAC-DT/54 and WPRI-DT/13 have a solid signal at my QTH (Whitman, MA). I'm hoping WJAR-DT will carry a lot more punch than it is right now. WJAR analog is a local here. There's no way that the DT of WJAR is equal to that of the analog signal. But, we shall see.

Again, according to TiVo... WJAR's RTN was scheduled to launch this Monday, May 26. That, like last week, seems to have been postponed until Sunday, June 1.

Hanson is one town in a much larger system. The thing is that the Providence stations must get "significantly viewed" status in your area of Plymouth County. Not sure how channel 6 got bounced (it's the closest to you - licensed to New Bedford), but that's what happened. Now it's tough to get it added back to the lineup and Comcast certainly wouldn't it that voluntarily. They probably lost significantly viewed status already and would get static from WBZ/CBS.

Here in Merrimack County NH WFXT is carried by DirecTV. But that begs the question why are WCVB and WMUR both carried (has WMUR not exercised its right because they're co-owned with WCVB?) on satellite and the sad excuse for a cable system? Even stranger is why Ch. 68 Boston is carried but its simulcaster Ch.21 Concord NH (WPXB?) is not AND DirecTV also carries the riveting ION national feed. If they'd like to save some bandwidth for HD wouldn't these things be first to get settled before building new birds?

I heard that WFXT was recently dropped. And they're not carried on DirecTV or Dish Network.

DirecTV, as well as Dish Network, carries what is known as "local into local" for local channels, which means that they are required to carry all local stations from a given market if they decide to offer even one from that market. The Boston DMA is unique in that it has two ABC affiliates, WCVB and WMUR, each from a different state. The local into local rules allow both affiliates to be sent to the Boston DMA because they are from different states. This allows both Massachusetts and New Hampshire viewers to watch local programming (including news) from their designated affiliate. DirecTV sends its Boston DMA signals to the entire DMA via a spot beam satellite. They cannot send individual stations to one part of the DMA and others to another part of the DMA. This is why all DirecTV viewers in the Boston DMA, even on Cape Cod, get channels 9, 11, 50, and 60 from New Hampshire. You would never receive these channels on the Cape with cable. As for channels 21 and 68, DirecTV does not carry ION affiliates from many areas because they carry the national ION feed. However, in certain markets where the local ION affiliate is owned by ION, they do offer that station, and channel 68 is one of them. Channel 21 is merely a repeater of 68 in Concord, N.H., and has no uniqueness to 68, so DirecTV does not have to carry it.
