WJAR to launch first HD newscast in Providence

Out-of-the-market, shot-in-the-dark prediction: WPRI will somehow even find a way to put together an HD newscast before WLNE does.

I bet 12's "Full HD" means that they will be widescreen, not HD in the field. Full HD acquisition is a bitch.

The ProJo story says full HD acquisition, directly quoting WPRI/WNAC's GM, but we shall see. WPRI is LIN's flagship, and given the size of their investment in HD relative to WLNE I would not rule out full HD acquisition. One thing we DO know for sure is that WLNE will launch several months behind schedule.

All of last nights 11 PM studio shots and opens were in SD, but the graphics and weather were HD (new weather graphics also launched). Field reports were in widescreen SD.

New set officially launches at 6:30 this morning!

WJAR says they're the first HD newscast in southern New England, which kind of baffles me.

Since when was Providence the only area that could be identified as southern New England? Pretty sure Providence is parallel with Hartford on the map, which means Hartford is part of southern New England (and just about everybody in Hartford is in HD IIRC), and most people identify Boston with southern New England (and everybody in Boston has been in HD for a while)...

Why not "The first HD newscast in Rhode Island?"

Man the Providence market gives me headaches...

Southern New England consists of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The HD newscasts in the Hartford/New Haven market include WTNH (ABC) of New Haven [started out as enhanced SD], WVIT (NBC) of New Britain [the first in-studio HD in the market] and WTIC (FOX) of Hartford. Oddly enough, market leader WFSB (CBS) of Hartford [for programming but not for their late news] still does their news in 4:3 SD, despite moving into their current Rocky Hill studio in 2007. You would think their equipment would be all modern? Strange!

P.S. Please remember that the Springfield/Chicopee/Holyoke, MA TV market is in southern New England, too! :D

Ah, yes, little ol' Springfield.

None of their newscasts are in HD yet, right? Has anybody out there discussed future plans of broadcasting in HD?
