WJAR-TV 10.2 could be carrying Charge! and dropping MeTV

I just read this on the avsforum board; a poster there saw an ad on the channel last night that this would happen, but no other information is yet available on the website of Charge or WJAR. Seeing that Charge is owned by Sinclair, and they operate WJAR, this is certainly possible. Should the change occur, maybe WLNE could put METV on one of its subchannels and drop one of the Court TV's that are duplicated on WPXQ's ION subchannels.

Huh, interesting. Me-TV and Antenna TV are the two networks that Sinclair has really avoided touching on its stations at all, mainly because they're the two most successful subchannel networks in television history.

I would hate for WJAR to drop it, but I can then probably understand the reason why. Plus, if WJAR were to do that, the 10pm news would have to be dropped as well or stay cable-only on OSN: Ocean State Networks.

there is another network on Comcast in my area that is carrying many of the same shows as Me-TV, including 4 hours of Perry Mason a day, Emergency runs for a couple of hours,Leave It To Beaver... they have Hazel, and some other stuff

FETV ... Family Entertainment TV

Interesting. MeTV is one of the highest rated diginets, so I have to think they’ll find another home in Providence. Also, it’s possible that MeTV made the decision not to renew the affiliation agreement because they made a deal with another station. WPRI/WNAC seem pretty full so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it show up on WLNE.

I emailed WJAR's program director this afternoon and received this response regarding the MeTV to Charge changeover:

The change is happening on September 1st. We still don’t know what will happen to MeTV in Providence - you’ll have to keep an eye on the MeTV website or grab the WCVB signal.

I’ll let you know when we hear more.

I also emailed MeTV and WLNE to see if they may carry the station after the changeover.

So its really happening, huh? My god. Another terrible mistake by WJAR to dump the #1 diginet for a low-budget ran diginet owned by their corporate overloards.

I've seen the Promo for CHARGE on MeTV Providence too. They also mentioned they'll still be inserting thier local junk (NBC 10 at 10/Studio 10). They've been running them for about 2 years now instead of Hogan's Heroes. I opted to watch WCVB 5.2 (MeTV Boston) for a while, but now they are dubbing with local news. CHARGE is already available to me via Antenna on WSBK TV Boston 38.4. Hoping someone in RI picks up MeTV? Many on cable will miss it.

WCVB already had 10pm news on theirs before WJAR did. But as long as you're able to pick up Me-TV via WCVB 5.2, then you won't miss much, although R.I. viewers will miss it in the short term.

I'm surprised to hear that WJAR's 10pm news will be staying put plus the Studio 10 repeat. After all, they're also on OSN: Ocean State Networks.

After the change from MeTV to Charge occurs, those without access to MeTV in thearea will respond to others when asked if they watched Hogan's Heroes on MeTV the following: "I see nothing, I hear nothing".

I can’t imagine MeTV not wanting to renew with station with the strongest signal in the market, so I’m not terribly surprised. And I believe they were one of MeTV’s longest-running affiliates.

That said, I wonder how much these local stations are actually making from the diginets. And what the compensation model looks like. MeTV hasn’t made any significant schedule changes for a LONG time, and I wonder if the ratings are flat and it’s not that big of a deal for them, revenue-wise, if they get a diginet that’s more narrowly focused. And I can’t imagine that MeTV’s demographics are very advertiser-friendly.

Maybe Sinclair said they didn't want to renew the contract and instead air a diginet that they own so they get ALL the revenue ;)

I was reading that MeTV does not compensate its affiliates for carriage, unlike most of the other diginets. Instead, the local stations have to sell ads on MeTV. Some stations prefer a model where they are compensated directly and let the diginet have all the ad time, so they don’t have to waste precious resources trying to sell ads on a lower-rated subchannel.

I also thought it was interesting that MeTV lost its affiliate in Washington DC earlier this year. They were on the Fox station there. MeTV owner Weigel purchased a low-power station in that market to keep MeTV available there, instead of cutting a deal with another station.

Just go to FrndlyTV.com... They stream MeTV and several other channels there. Only $7 a month in high definition and you get two channels of a DVR you can watch on anything
