WJAR-TV Providence and WTEN-TV Albany

As mentioned on this board, the transmitter locations of WLNE-TV 6 Providence (transmitter in Tiverton, RI) and WRGB-TV 6 Schnectady (transmits from New Scotland, NY) and WCSH-TV 6 Portland (transmits from Sebago, ME) are all short spaced, and operate on offset frequencies to compensate for short spacing.
But what about the short spacing between WJAR-TV 10 Providence (transmitting from Rehoboth, MA) and WTEN-TV 10 Albany (transmitting from New Scotland, NY) and WCBB-TV 10 Augusta, ME?

The WCBB-TV (PBS) channel 10 transmitter is located in Litchfield, ME (a bit south of Augusta). I don't think there's a problem with that of channel 10 and Rehoboth, MA. The other short spacing issue in New England has to do with WPXT-TV (WB) channel 51 of Portland, ME and WNYA-TV (UPN) channel 51 of Pittsfield, MA (Albany, NY market). I think Portland (actually Gray, ME) is the reason why the WNYA-TV transmitter isn't atop Mount Greylock in Berkshire County.

You may want to add WDMR LP 65 (Telemundo) in Springfield, MA(it's transmitter is atop Provin Mountain in Agawam, MA) when they move to 51 with more power (from 31.4kW on 65 to 143kW on 51)

Again, it is done with Offsets.

WJAR has a positive offset
WTEN has a negative offset
WCBB has a negative offset
WCAU in Philly has a Zero offset

You can compare offsets of all the VHF New England and nearby NY stations

WCBS has a Zero offset
WKTV has a negative offset
WGBH has a positive offset

WCAX has a Zero offset
WFSB has a positive offset

WNBC has a Zero offset
WBZ has a negative offset

WNYW has a Plus offset
WCVB has a Negative offset
WPTZ has a Zero offset

WABC has a Zero offset
WHDH has a Plus offset

WTNH has a Zero offset
WMTW has a Minus offset

WWOR has a Plus offset
WMUR has a Minus offset

WPIX has a Plus offset
WENH has a Zero offset

WNET has a Negative offset
WNYT has a Zero offset
WGME has a Positive offset

Re: Offsets

Sorry for being stupid, but what is an offset?<P ID="signature">______________

Re: Offsets

I should know the answer to that, but I don't! Tex: can you explain in detail perhaps?

Offset is a deviation from the standard frequency associated with
a channel. Offsets may be positive or negative; either way, it's
usually a 10-kiloHertz difference.

For example, the standard frequency for the visual carrier associated
with channel 6 is 83.250 MHz. 6- (six minus) has a negative offset
of 10-kHz, so the visual falls at 83.240 MHz. 6+ (six plus), an
example of which is WLNE, Providence, Rhode Island/New Bedford,
Massachusetts, has their visual at 83.260 Mhz. Aural carrier is
displaced accordingly for each.

Hope that helps....

Ya, What he said.

Thanks Les!

I need to email you soon too...

WWLP has a zero offset.
WVNY has a positive offset.
WYOU has a negative offset.

What are the offsets for the stations in Bangor and Syracuse?

Re: Offsets..thanks

Thanks Les and Tex for your help. I was just curious about "offsets" since we were talking about it! Thanks again.

Promises....

> I need to email you soon too...

Several jokes I could reference but not on this board....

Most involving houseflies sitting on the rump of a horse
in fervent hope....

Anyway, If you do find time, please don't be surprised
if I am a while in replying. I'm back in the old
country for the rest of this month and will have only
occasional web access.

Weather is incredibly good; my new AutoGram board has
arrived and I'm almost done shoveling out the space
where the new stuio will be in a couple of months.

Now, gotta get back to pitching out obsolete stuff.
Coming to e-Bay real soon, a fair-condition Wheatstone
A-20, a couple of 3-deck cart machines (but why?)
and some weird stuff like an Amigo "big bottom".
You wanna get a quick start on this stuff, 3-mail
me...address in profile.

Re: Offsets

Some stations below are listed with a negative offset, and some with a minus offset. What's the difference between the two?

Likewise, the difference between a positive offset and a plus offset?

three letters.

four letters.

Honestly, the only difference, I just type one in place of the other.
That's all.

Where the hell did you find this thread? It's over a year old!!

Why a WJAR-10 and a WTEN-10

Those stations are not short-spaced. Their transmitters are located at least 155 miles apart, the minimum under FCC rules for when those stations were allocated.

WLNE-6 is licensed to New Bedford MA. When it signed on in 1963 (as WTEV-6) the transmitter was put in Tiverton RI for a good reason: Anywhere else would cause interference to Channel 5 in Boston (then WHDH-TV, now WCVB). A station on Channel 6 has to be at least 55-60 miles from a station on Channel 5. Again that is per FCC rules.

In Rutland MA we used to receive 2 Channel 8's from New Haven and Mt. Washington. Neither station interfered w/ one another with the antenna properly aimed. They were both ABC's and we rarely watched these channels as we also were able to get the ABC affilates from Boston on 5, New Bedford 6, Mt. Greylock 19, and Springfield-Holyoke on 40 all of which were perfectly clear.

So being northwest of Worcester is a haven for TV reception? Or...did you have one hell of a deluxe roof antenna? Here in New Britain, CT (southwest of Hartford), I can't get the WGGB-TV channel 40 signal from Mount Tom (Holyoke) at all.
