WJAR TV to have a 4pm Newscast in September

WJAR-10 probably won't have to hire any new personnel for this new newscast, and the expense involved will be minimal.

Plus, there will be lots of political ads over at least the first two months of the newscast, since candidates and especially outside PAC's love to buy commercial spots in news programs. And WJAR will benefit not just from candidates and PAC's in Rhode Island, but Massachusetts candidates and PAC's as well, since Bristol County, Massachusetts (which includes the cities of Fall River and New Bedford) is part of the Providence TV market.

I say "at least the first two months" because the 2024 Presidential election campaign may actually begin before the end of this year. During the second half of 2023, there could be a lot of ad dollars from candidates and outside PAC's, especially if President Biden decides against running for re-election, which would open the floodgates to a tsunami of candidates from both major parties and the money candidates and PAC's would spend.

It's an inexpensive way (as there would be little additional cost) to replace a syndicated show that probably cost WJAR a lot of money to get the rights to broadcast.

WJAR's two major rivals, WLNE-6 and WPRI-12, already have 4 P.M. local newscasts on weekdays.

WJAR will make far more money in the hour between 4 and 5 P.M. on weekday afternoons.
