WJAS 1320 AM coming in clearly in Central VA

I was driving back home this evening and tuned over the dial, finding 1320 loud and clear as a bell from Pittsburgh, PA with WJAS. That was around 7PM and stayed there until fading out around 8:00. I can't say I've ever heard them day or night here in the middle of Virginia.

They show 5,000W day and 3,000W night.

The last few years around mid-September, I was a few miles South of Virginia Beach for a few weeks & was able to pick them up very clear with minimal fading in the car & on my Grundig S350DL.....I found it hard to believe because it is tuff to pick up WJAS in points out of the city!!!

Interesting, because that's probably another 150 miles Southeast of me.

It has been very cold here the last two days, so maybe the weather has something to do with it.

WJAS used to stream online....is there some site that still has it? WJAS' home page doesn't show.

WJAS is transmitting from a relatively new transmitter site in Highland Park, near the Pittsburgh Zoo.
They were formerly on a slag dump near the Squirrel Hill Tunnels. That area was redeveloped for
some fantastically expensive housing, and our brilliant city government tried to evict WJAS without
first checking the lease details. There was a lawsuit and city taxpayers eventually ended up footing
the bill to move those towers.

Back when they were 13Q they would frequently take calls from listeners in Baltimore,
Philadelphia, all along the Eastern Seaboard.

WJAS used to boom into NY's southern tier. During the winter months at my location, Wellsville, NY, they would override the now defunct WHHO. However since they moved the "antenna farm" I haven't heard them. Might be bad timing on my part when listening.

Listening again for them later last night (midnight or so) then again this evening, and nothing at all. Just a little opening there for an hour or so last night.

If anything I would think their new location would provide better grounding than the old.
I can't imagine heaps of slag are a very good asset in that regard.

WJAS was back this morning from sunrise to about 8AM, nice and clear enough to hear the morning drive show.
