So WJBR is already all Christmas. Another reason for me to avoid the station.

I scanned by 99.5 yesterday and couldn't believe they were already running Christmas Music (the non-religious variety) more than a month before this Holy Day. Unfortunately, their target audience, women, seem to really like "secular" Christmas songs and will listen to them over and over again until Dec. 25th.

Funny though, every women, I know who works in retail, do NOT like Christmas Music to be played until right before the holiday, as they are forced to hear it all day long from now until Christmas Eve at their place of employment.

Oh Holy Night this morning...not terribly secular. Not sure how it's unfortinate that an audience enjoys non-religious songs alongside the Silent Nights (et al) of the world. It's a commercial radio station--of course they're going to play those songs if the audience wants them.

Not surprising a segment of people, including in retail, don't want to hear the songs that early, but the bottom line is the bottom line.

Wonder if they'll be playing Christmas music on July 4th next year? I'm very pleased to report that Oldies Radio 1620 WILL NOT be playing Christmas music again this year, we may have a couple special shows but the regular format stays intact. www.oldiesradio1620.com

I don't mind the "secular" Christmas songs, but do prefer the religious Christmas songs. Even so, how many times can you listen to Oh Holy Night or Silent Night between now and Christmas.

On the other hand, generally speaking, almost all Christmas Music has a happy message (there are some that are sad like Blue Christmas and I'll Be Home for Christmas, etc) and in these days of serious economic problems facing the nation and world maybe folks find some escape through this happy form of music. So in that sense, it might be a good thing for those who chose to indulge so early before Christmas. Maybe for a short time, the music takes their minds off their troubles.

In any case, apparently enough of the right type of listeners want Christmas Music this early or stations like WJBR wouldn't bother.

While at WNRK, I tried to keep the early Christmas music the secular type (back in those days we started our 12 days of Christmas around Dec. 13th, but started playing the stuff the Friday after Thanksgiving - 1 song per hour). My feeling was based on religion. The season starts with the 1st Sunday of Advent. Period. Jack Reynolds of WJBR fame did the same thing.

I love hearing Mario Lanza singing "Oh Holy Night". But not until Christmas Eve!

sorry WTSW, this means another bad book. Your music mix has once again changed and the format is dead. I predict. WJBR a 9.2 and WTSW a 4.8 for the fall. Dim the lights on Shipley or should I say Have a Holly Jolly X mas? You get what you deserve!

Mario Lanza, Pavarotti, the Philly Orchestra, etc, doing "Oh Holy Night" all great arrangements. Talking about this has kind of put me in the mood to hear some of those great Christmas songs. Maybe I'll go online and see if I can find a Christmas Music station that features more of this type of Christmas Music.

That's OK.

Here is a youtube video of the Wanamaker Organ (apparently the world's largest) and about 650 choir voices singing Handel's Hallelujah Chorus at the Center City Philly Macy's. It was part of a thing called, A Random Act of Culture. Besides being a great performance, its interesting to see how many of the shoppers were moved by this beautiful sacred music. The link is:

Enjoy.
