WJBR sold to VCY???

You're not reading the room. There are radio geeks here.
I love this. But, radio geeks being here is all the more reason to occasionally bring peoples' focus back to the reality of the audio (not "radio") landscape in 2023. Personally, I get a kick out of it when a thread has posts that keep alternating between "reality of how the business works today" and stuff like "I hate HD because it makes it so I can't hear far-away stations I'm not supposed to be getting anyway."

And? It’s a marvelous age where we can hear all kinds of things from all around the world. 🤷🏻‍♂️ That’s pretty good for all geeks.

I don’t care if they go off the air, they come back or move the transmitter to the moon. They can have at it and do whatever they need to do.
You just started the next space race: Will the USA, Russia, India, or China be the first to put a transmitter on the moon?

I just checked out VCY for the first time and it took literally two minutes on their website for me to think "Well, I can't change that pre-set button fast enough." One of the first things I saw was an article about a show they aired. The show and the article are both full-on disinformation, designed specifically to scare people about getting COVID vaccines. Disgusting.

Their website design is straight out of 2004 as well. I mean really, a ten year old could design a better website for them in five minutes, in between glances at tiktok and MrBeast videos lol.

And frankly, that's why all of this is such a damn shame, too. The VCY folks are far-right conservative broadcasters in a pretty blue area of the country, a fairly catholic area too. I'm sure in the protestant mid-west they do well, but over here, I just can't imagine anyone's gonna be rushing to put 99.5 on their presets.

It's one thing for the 1kW 740am to go far-right, but for a massive 50kW FM to go this way? Just really strange. But radio isn't what it used to be yadda yadda yadda.

It'll probably be at midnight tonight, but it could be funny if the station went into the Nationwide EAS test as WJBR and came out as VCY America.

I am 100% sure that vastly more people will be taking 99.5 off their presets. And I agree that a huge signal like this is a very odd home for such a niche format.

Not really that odd. Sadly, this will become more commonplace in this industry as music formats move to Spotify, Pandora, satellite, and internet stations and FM becomes the AM radio of the old days with formats like news, talk, religious, sports, etc. becoming more commonplace.

If you're in the business of prostelytizing, you will certainly look to get into areas where you think you can reach the heathens or whatever we are.

But that said, yes, it's "overall" leaning blue, but there are deep, deep red people and areas throughout the general area. Lots of fundamentalist churches that would seemingly align with this organization.

The industry has been depressing me for years. But that is really depressing. In a decade, the entire band may be propaganda, religion (are they different things?), sports, and news. And really, by then, will folks still be turning on a radio to get news?

I just did a little inventory and found that if I want to listen to a religious station from a radio at my home (or my driveway), what's coming to 99.5 FM will give me a fourteenth option. Lucky me!

I've got 10 country options here in eastern Vermont -- seven if you disregard the three translators that carry stations whose main signals are also audible -- but only three for religion. Wanna swap?

In the general Philly area we have 88.9 WBZC, 89.5 WYPA., 90.5 WVBV, 95.3/1540 W237EH/WNWR, 97.1 W246AQ, 100.7 W264BH, 103.5 W278AK, 106.9 WKVP, 107.5 WBYN, 560 WFIL, 640 WWJZ, 690 WPHE, 740 WJFP (far-right talk but heavily religious still) WTMR 800, 860 WWDB (airs religious programs) 950 WKDN, 1040 WCHR, 1570 WISP.

That's a whole lotta god for ya - 18 stations by my own metric not including the up and coming 99.5. 16 stations if you onlu count specifically round-the-clock bible thumping.

Mike currently trying not to cry on the air as he says goodbye, admitting that he doesn't know whether he'll work in radio again after this. Hard to hear.

That other potential buyers for a powerful signal already running a popular mainstream format would have been unable or unwilling to outbid a Godcaster for that station would terrify me, too, were I in radio. I guess the advertising depression is only getting deeper, and buyers who don't have the advantages that religious operators have feel that acquiring more stations is too risky.
