WJDA HAS BEEN SOLD

According to The Patriot Ledger WJDA and WESX has been sold to an out of state group. So much for the "primary broadcast station for the South Shore....'no school, all schools all day..." That's what it was primarily known for.
JDA has been a waste of a good radio signal for at least 30 years. Don't let the door hit you on the way out Jay... any relation to the Dominatrix Asher??????

Re: WJDA And WESX Both Sold

This is a link to the Patriot Ledger article reporting the sale of WJDA-1300 and WESX-1230.

The article reported that the new ownership also owns WDJZ-1530 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. According to Radio-Locator.com's station information page, WDJZ programs a Carribbean format.

A personal note: Years ago, when it was the first station to broadcast the "Music Of Your Life" adult standards format, I actually picked-up WDJZ at my home in Norwood, Massachusetts for the ten minutes prior to the station's sunset sign-off. I don't think ther 1530 in Middleborough (now WVBF) was yet on the air.

Re: WJDA And WESX Both Sold

WDJZ is not a Caribbean formatted station. They broker their broadcast day. Most of the shows are religious programming targeting Blacks or Hispanics. They also have a polka show on Sundays that got bounced off of WICC.

Re: WJDA And WESX Both Sold

Thanks for the info!

I was going by what was listed on Radio-Locator.com since WDJZ apparently does not have a website.

MOVING TO CHELSEA

The Patriot Ledger reports today that the new owners of WJDA will move the operation out of Quincy to Chelsea for Christian and "ethnic" read that Spanish programming with ministers broadcasting directly from their churches.

Thanks Jay Asher for selling out a great frequency and not serving the public interest. What a disgrace. JDA Senior must be turning in his grave.

Before CCU flipped 1200 to progressive talk, wasn't the format there Spanish religious? ISTR that it was. The rumor at the time of the flip was that CCU had had its fill of independent program producers who didn't pay for the air time.

More than a rumor is the fact that a year or so ago the AM DX e-mail lists carried many postings about WDJZ (the 1530 daytimer in Bridgeport CT that is owned by the new ownwers of WESX/WJDA) failing to power down at sunset. WDJZ has post-sunset authority to remain on the air at reduced power from Bridgeport sunset until Cincinnati sunset but was alleged to be operating all night with its daytime power of 10 kW. (Cincinnati is the home of CCU's WCKY, the dominant Class A on 1530.) Whether WDJZ's apparent repeated violations of its license ever got the attention of the FCC I don't know. And whether WDJZ was then owned by its current owners, I also don't know. But if the FCC became aware of and was able to verify WDJZ's repeated reported violations and if the station was owned by its current owners at the time of those violations, the station's technical record apparently was not a factor in the FCC's decision to allow the owners to purchase two stations in the Boston area that, AFAIK, had unblemished technical records over the course of about half a century of ownership by one family.

I was a part-time board-op at 1060 in the early 90's when it was brokered Spanish Religious as WBIV "Boston's Inspirational Voice" and the studios were in Allston. The night signal they were running at the time, which I've heard was only a CP that was never fully granted under that incarnation, could barely be heard at the studios.

Yes it was; and a few months ago there was an incident where it was thought they had gone back to the format. Instead of going to the Ed Schulz show on a Fri
afternoon at 3 pm, Spanish-language religion was heard. It was some kind of
technical error (program intended for WJLT 650). Just an error, soon corrected.<P ID="signature">______________

Actually raccoon, it wasn't Spanish religion. It was rather Portuguese religion; brokered almost exclusively by Alpha y Omega Ministries, outside of a 1-hour local Italian music show on Sundays.

I think 650 was already WSRO by then. When Langer sold WSRO 1470 (now WAZN) to Arthur Liu a couple of years ago he moved the WSRO calls to 650.

It was. I believe that WSRO adopted most of the brokered Brazilian programming not long after WKOX flipped to liberal talk. Not sure when the CCM/teaching format of "J-Light" officially came to a close, though. After the calls flipped to WSRO, "J-Light" remained from sign-on to 12:30pm.

EWF,

What kind of a comment is that? Jay Asher is the nicest person I have worked for in my 16 years in the radio business. The way he treats his employees, rather his extended family, can not be compared to any other that I have met. I started there while in high school and worked there for about nine years. I learned a lot from the likes of Roy Lind, John Nicolson and Jay.

I worked at WJDA for almost 14 years! Very sad, we were a class operation. A lot of sweat (from a lot of people long gone) and a lot of love went into doing a quality job at WJDA. I lived in Rhode Island for most of that time so the commute wasn't the nice part!
