I was traveling in the North Quabbin area yesterday and listened to WJDF (97.3 FM) for a bit as I normally do when I'm in the region. Very strange mix of music but hyper-local and seemingly live. They seem to have done well with this station in a region that's had it tougher than most in the state economically.

Anyhow, I noticed (by accident) that their signal was also broadcasting on 98.9 FM along the Daniel Shays Highway (mostly between the junctions of 2A and 122). I didn't see anything on the radio-locator page regarding a translator. Anyone know what's up with that?
 
Can't comment on the technical side. But I can you the station is owned and operated by the Dean brothers, a group of three guys who have been in radio many years. They care about radio and their local community. Each and every one of them is at the station every day doing air shifts and/or otherwise taking care of day-to-day management of the station. A classic "mom and pop" station.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that Jay Deane was the only one of the three who worked in radio before they bought the station. Didn't the other two brothers work in other industries?
 
how does this station sound? I never listened to it before. I remember I used to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Amherst, Ma way back in the day when I was younger (198??? 1986) Before that, They used to live in Orange back around ?? 1983? I can't remember, I was about 6 years old?.
When we used to go visit them in Amherst, I was around 11 years old (around 1986) on the way to Amherst, around Orange, we used to listen to WMAS 94.7 and 96.5 T I C FM
A year later we moved to Amherst, Ma then moved to Sunderland, Ma when I was 12. That time I was listenning to 95.7 KISS FM
Anyways, how does WJDF sound these days? Tell us an example what they play?

Anything and everything. For instance I heard Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling" go right into "If" by Bread. 10CC, Jon Secada, Nickelback, John Mayer, Elton John... seems any top 40 tune of the past 40 years is fair game. They seem to have full stopsets too...
 
I'd describe WJDF as a hybrid AC/Hot AC/AAA/Classic Hits. Sort of MOR for the 21st century (I guess they call that "variety hits" these days in some circles). Great small-town station.
