My guess is that it won't be classic country either....I heard there were some funky rumors floating around over at WOKK's sales meeting today. They should be happy that 95.1 has gone away. I hear they think the new 101 will be country, too. I think it could end up being Hispanic. But I've been wrong before.....

Well, 101 doesnt have as good of a signal as 95 does... so I guess whatever theyre going to put on 101 will do better...

Q101 used to be a VERY competitive radio station, and with 100kw, competed across about half of central MS and half of central AL. Hispanic on a 100kw blowtorch just doesn't look like a smart thing to do in Mississippi. ESPECIALLY in Mississippi with a station with such a heritage. If CC does this, I think it will just go to prove that they don't understand their audience, all they understand is doing what they want to do just because they're big enough that they can.
95.1 can't beat WOKK because of WOKK's better signal. Therefore, they'll move the country format to 101.3. Q101 has little listenership outside of Lauderdale County, so that format will be put on the lower-powered 95.1. Too bad too... Q101 used to be dominant over east-central Mississippi and west-central Alabama. We used to do remotes, DJ parties and various promotions all over the place. Sadly, Q101 is just a shell of what it once was. The end of an era.

You know the market well. You are right on target. And who better to host a new morning show on a country station? Two former morning show hosts from WOKK. I agree with what you said about Q101 also. It used to be THE station in years past and it is truly the end of an era that holds fond memories for many.

When did WJDQ start to fall apart and become a "shell" of what it once was? I don't live in market so I'm not aware of how it sounds. Was it when they put on a syndicated morning show? I thought the PD they hired about a year ago played a part in the station's success back in the old days and would do good things. How is he doing with the station? Can someone in Meridian let us know how it sounds? Based on 12+ numbers, it looks like the last time they really kicked was Spring of '04 when they were number one. What happened then? Since then, they've been averaging significantly lower than that.
it lost it's identity.station once sounded like a major market.great sound, personalities and on the street in your face presence.clear channel can f--- up a wet dream.syndicated morning shows, voice tracking, hell that's no way to do real radio, but that is the nature of the beast today.and chr does not sound as good as it use to, too much cross over rap and hip hop crap...cc's new motto should be "what can we screw up today""IMHO

That puts signal to signal equal on both stations. Do you think WOKK is about to get their tail kicked or think the Holladays will reach into the family coffers for a big money push?
What would you do? Will it be an all out radio battle?

In 1979, 97.1 was WALT, with a CHR format. It was #2 in the market, behind WOKK-AM. When Q101 went CHR, WALT was instantly destroyed. The same could happen to WOKK now if CC does country right on 101.3. But most CC country stations sound lame and boring. I was in Mobile recently and listened to WKSJ, which used to be a killer country station. Now it's just another mundane spot on the dial.
