WJDX AM and FM

About 40 or so years ago, there was a fellow on WJDX late at night had good music program opened with either canadian sunset and closed with land of dreams. I think is was simulcast on am and fm. This would have been in the middle 60s. I can't remember his name, does anyone here remember?

Tom Roane on WJDX.
Show originally on WJQS - Land of Dreams.- late 50s. In 57-58 hosted by Al Wiman, following Big J Rock and Roll Party.

Elevator Music*. Google "WJDX-FM" and you'll see a few mentions. We need to invite those guys over to join our learned panel in sharing their back stories.

*My memories own were it leaning more light classical, perhaps not to compete with the elevator-music subcarrier, but then again I was just a dumb kid who kinda liked classical music and what did I know about the difference? I more remember the neat-o Westinghouse stereo FM table radio my folks bought me to listen to pre-rock format, and boy-oh-boy do I remember when it changed!

Montovani out, demon (rock) music in, and another Mississippi boy was saved by rock and roll :)

The headline for this post is Re: WJDX AM and FM. I never heard of JDX fm and have been out of the market for years now so this could be a station that was befor my itme in the early 80's or after my time.
Is JDX fm on now or when was it on and what format is it or was it,

After being in St. Louis as long as I was, I'd forgotten Al Wiman had been in Jackson.

He had quite a role he played in the Manson murders story.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't WJDX FM go rock around 1968 and keep the WJDX call letters until it changed to WZZQ arond 1973? This is the original WJDX FM. Not the WJDX FM of the 90's, I never counted that one because WJDX AM started leasing WSLI FM 96.3 and changed the call letters to WJDS 62-WJDX FM 96.3. Which I never liked. WJDX AM only was much better in my opinion. It became too cookie cutter after they went on 96.3.

WJDX-FM actually went on the air in 1949, according to Bob McRaney's "The History of Radio in Mississippi". I remember reading that the original transmitter site was located in Rankin Co. on a tall tower (for that time, anyway). When WLBT-TV went on the air in 1953, they moved the WJDX-FM transmitter site to Raymond. The WJDX-FM calls were used until 1973 when they changed to WZZQ-FM.

Ironically, was having a conversation about this a couple months ago and could not remember his name either.
I think the title of the show was “Land of Dreams” and the theme song was “Land of Dreams” by Hugo Winterhalter.

On the other historical matter, WLBT originally went on the air at the Rankin site not far from Whitfield, I had a relative who was an on and off again resident at that fine institution, my parents threatened me often with incarceration there as an adolescent if I didn’t behave. Back to the subject, I didn't know that 102.9 originated at that site but it all (TV&FM) relocated out to Raymond in either 1961 or 1962 as FAA would not allow tall tower at Whitfield and I think ch-12 was the first out there at 1700'.

When the Candle Stick Shopping center tornado took out the WLBT Raymond tower in 1966, they moved the original ch-3 turn-style antenna and mounting socket section out to Raymond and it still sits there right next to the transmitter supervisor’s house.
Sorry for the thread ramble.
Best,

Land of Dreams (and the Winterhalter theme) began on WJQS.
Tom Roan (sp) moved it with him to WJDX as I recall when WJQS went country.
Before Tom, Al Wiman and John Friskello (John Jay, in those days) and others did Land of Dreams.
On WJQS, it followed the Big J Rock and Roll Party, which aired from 7-10.
And just to show you how much crap I have stored in my limited memory, the
R&R party theme was Kool Kitty by Buddy Johnson.
WLBT and WJDX had to move their transmitter sites when the "new" airport opened.
JDX went to Beasley Road and WLBT to Raymond. JDX-FM went to the TV tower.
JDX FM was the first and only FM in the market until WWHO (94.7) came along. Its tower
was on Terry Road and did preacher tapes and gospel. Soon after, WJMI (WRBC's FM), WLIN 95.5, and WSLI FM 96.3...among
others.

I faintly remember the call letters "WJDX" in red lights down what I suppose was the STL tower somewhere around downtown Jackson. I must have ten or eleven back in the 60's. Does anyone know anything about this?

Phil,

It was probably at the WLBT / WJDX studios off Jefferson St. I know they had call letters on the building but may have had them on the microwave tower too.
