WJDX and WRBC 1967-1969

I started working in radio at WJDX the summer of 1967 and stayed till early fall of 1968. I thought I'd drop some names of folks I worked with during those my time at WJDX-AM-FM/WLBT and WRBC/WJMI.
Sorry to roll so long, but maybe one of these names will spark another posting. Thanks for letting me ramble.

Don't know how I missed this thread. A very good read to say the least..WRBC "Rebel Radio" Home of the Good Guys! I was still in high school when Herb Guthrie became GM of WRBC. His son and I grew up together. When WJMI-FM was under construction Herb offered to pay us (very little) to play music during testing. In those days ya had to have a 3rd phone FCC license in order to read the meters and keep transmitter logs. I ditched school for a few days and went to DC and took the test. That summer Rodney and I would take turns playing music on WJMI at night. I believe Marshal McGee was on afternoon drive & Bill Cagle had the night shift. I got my first real taste of Top-40 when they would let me have the WRBC chair from 12m to 1:am some of the nights.

Herb Guthrie got me into a broadcasting school in DC with the promise of a job after the course. I started full time at WRBC in Jan 67. .... Ahhh yes I remember kicking tha power up after midnight. Don't remember any log issues coming up. I would always wait until there were only PSA's to run & made sure to drop the power back to 1KW when running the FCC required station id each half hour.The chief engineer always got there around 12:30 to do his work.and always had fresh donuts. What was his name? Sometimes we just stayed on the air until the morning man arrived.

I remember when Dennis Hudson arrived on tha set. He went on to do very well in broadcasting doing news for WCBI-TV and later writing a book. He will be missed. Think I'm gonna wait till tha next post before going to WJDX-FM.

My name is Doug Monks and I "worked" at WRBC from 1963-64 as . I guess what you would call now, an intern. When I was 13, a friend and I had just left a movie and walked by the studio and decided to walk upstairs and see if we could watch the DJ. Within 10 minutes of watching Larry Parks thru that window, I knew thats what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Jimmy McCoullough walked in and I heard him tell Larry that he had no one to answer the phones for him that night for his dedication show called "Party Line". I spoke up and said I would do it and he said "Cool, call your folks and see if its OK for you to stay". I would spend every Friday and Saturday night as Jimmy's intern and had a blast. I would also help Herb Guthrie set up remotes. I remember one on the rooftop of the concession stand at a drive-in. The other guys I remember were Bob Bishop, Wayne Dowdy, Bob(?) Mack...It was exciting to be there when the Beatles hit but my Dad was transferred to Little Rock in the summer of 64 and I had to leave. I was very upset about having to leave the station but I did get to hang out a little bit at KAAY in Little Rock. We moved to Birmingham a year later and all thru highschool I would never forget my time at WRBC and in 1968 got my first job at a small station in Georgia and stayed in the business for 30 years.
