WJFB

ok...I know this isn'r radio-related...but...

has anyone else watched WJFB TV 66 (Comcast 22) weekday mornings?
at 7am...it's "The Morning Show with Dr. Joe Frank Bryant" (WJFB...get it?)

"The Morning Show" consists of a static shot of Dr. Bryant and some guy to his left working the computer...
and he reads news from the Tennessean and Lebanon Democrat...and makes outrageous commentary
to each story. Live phone calls? Hey...why not? And of course, the ringer is audible...and the
callers are all his friends and/or patients.

You have to see it: tape it...DVR it...Tivo it... The "set" looks like an elementary school classroom...
the graphics look like a Tandy-80 from 1979. I'm failing greatly to describe this...

trust me on this...take a look

No surprise. I worked there quite a few years ago and believe me, the place is very low-tech. You've heard of low-budget. We had NO budget. It was only due to the creative genius of our chief master control guy and engineer that we were able to put on a halfway decent newscast, albeit primitive, every day. The Jim Owens fiasco made it look more polished for a short time but I guess they've gone back to the early days.

The Jim Owens era was interesting: they moaned and complained about not being
carried by Viacom (when WJFB went full power)...but...as a Viacom employee at the time...
all they had to do was ASK! The must-carry provisions were in place...and had they asked
in writing...via registered mail...Viacom would have has no choice but to put them on the system.
I considered telling them...but didn't want it getting back where the info came from.
Remember the live programming on 66 when Owens re-launched it? I have a VHS of Teddy Bart
and Hollywood Manning...with a live obscene phone call. Chapel Fisher's "Pillow Talk"?

oh yeah..."co host" with Dr Bryant is his son, Will...he was identified on-air after I posted originally.
He appears to want to be anywhere but on-air with dad...and will repeatedly correct and criticize him!
and when the end credits roll...zoom...he removes his mic and bolt off the set!

At least that's not as bad as the old W27AN (WMTS) Channel 27 LPTV station in Murfreesboro. They used to simulcast their 'Breakfast Club' program from the NW Broad St Hardee's as it aired on 810 AM back in the early 90's.

Sort of like watching Kuralt-era 'CBS Sunday Morning', but falling asleep MUCH quicker ;D

I think that's about the time when the TV part split from the AM (WAPB) and the AM set up it's studios in an old TOPS burger stand across from WGNS on S. Church St.

The mid 90's got a smidge better with actual attempts at a local newscast from their studios over on S. Church St in the King's Table Buffet shopping center (where WBOZ 104.9 used to be located). They had a reporter from the Murfreesboro Daily News Journal newspaper that did these over the top 'radio announcer' style deliveries. No video clips or anything of that sort, just news read from a prompter.

Oh, yes. It's like a train wreck - I want to turn away but can't. I need to put some clips up on YouTube sometime. What's even worse is that Lebanon is in negotiation with Charter for a full-time Lebanon public access channel. These are not the people you want to hand the keys to the control room to!

They also do a Sunday morning broadcast which is hideous as well. I remmeber seeing in the tv section listings a few years ago that they had a morning newscast. I tuned in one morning and watched for about 10 minutes. They also run 10 year old episodes of Jack Hanna's animal adventures to meet their kids programming requirements. Complete with the old commericals.

It's a shame because this station could be something useful and show old movies and sitcoms. In stead they run jewelry television most of the day.

I remember the out-of-work actors trying to do "news features" during the Owens era as well as the horribly remade and localized music videos. Our morning show and newscasts may not have been high-tech but the crew I worked with knew what they were doing. I still have a few VHS tapes of shows and newscasts from my time there.

on Thursday...the forgot to turn on THE camera: can't wait for Friday's adventure

Some dry erase boards and markers would add a nice touch. When the local fundamentalist preachers are giving their algebra classes on sign of the beast, fall of the Babylonian Empire and other topics Biblically mathematical, you know the program is against the hour when that marked board is full. Another local access has a picture of law books imposed on a stretched sheet or curtain. The reflected light off this screen reeks of less than amateur hour.

During my days at TV 66, we had a few distinguished guests on "Middle Tennessee Showcase," the morning talk program. Fred Graham and Les Jameson came to be on live. Before I arrived, they almost never taped interviews for the show and once I was asked why certain people would not come to Lebanon at 7:30 or later 8 in the morning. The folks there could not understand that. We were fortunate to have a few satellite interviews tossed at us, as well as some phone interviews with photos--the creative genius of one Mike Martin made those phone interviews and all the local stuff interesting and entertaining.

Funny--they insisted we do the daily talk show live, yet the midday news had to be taped. Both were rerun that evening, with the news at 6:30 and the talk show immediately following. The midday news was 15 minutes, a throwback to the 1950s and early 60s. The morning update, which was about 10 minutes, was live, immediately followed by a music video courtesy of some promotional outfit with whom the Bryant family had made a contact. I produced and anchored both newscasts and the talk program.

I remember them going to Wal-Mart and buying public domain VHS tapes for the evening movies. The makers of infomercials would send them tapes and they actually ran them for free a few times, thinking they were getting free programming and not realizing that some other local station was running them and getting paid for it. Believe it or not, yes, it happened.

You've seen the movie UHF. I lived it. :)

if I had the money, I would love to the buy the station, and put something decent on it, or something I like. Old black & white movies would be better than what's on now.

Re: WJFB Morning Show!

I was reading these comments today and surprised at how mean and criticizing some people can be. The Morning Show with Dr. Frank Bryant is a local Lebanon TV show in the mornings. The show has Dr. Bryant and to correct others his "grandson" Will not his son. This is just a small town show that gives information about local and some national news. What is wrong with that? Obviously viewers are watching it because the show is headed to an hour long soon. Yes it is unprepared at times and needs some boosting, however it is not Live with Regis and Kelly! Come on and give them a break. It is entertaining to watch. Hopefully in the future they can tweak out some issues and work on problems they have. They do need to add some other people to the show, like a Community Beat section of news and events happening in Lebanon and even a movie review section. I know 2 people perfect for those positions. There are others things in this world to be more considered about and worried about rather than The Morning Show with Dr. Bryant. So give them a break and let a small town show be who they are. If the show is that bad, then why do you keep watching it???????? Lebanon is a great city to live in and is growing each and everyday. I support the Morning Show and only wish them to grow and learn more vital and important aspect on television news. Need a correspondent, let me know! :-* :-* :-* :-*[/color]

Further proving exactly what I said earlier: These are not the people you want to hand the keys to the control room to!

a. sheer disbelief that this continues on a daily basis
b. I have no problem with Lebanon...but...this show is NOT representative of Lebanon

the show is just a plaything for Dr Joe...and that's fine...but it can't be taken seriously
(and thanks for the update on Will: have you ever seen anyone more uncomfortable on-air?
nothing personal towards Will...he just looks like he wants to get the ____ outta there!)

Maybe they could also do nights at V-102.5 instead of all the dead air, half-songs and triple plays at once.
