WJFK to sports??

Heard a rumor that that WJFK is flipping to sports in July, with The Junkies in the morning drive. Is this true, is everyone but the Junkies out the door? and what day is it going to take place?

Judging by Big O & Dukes' and Mike O'Meara's subtle hints on their Thursday shows, this is indeed the end. It's a shame, it seems like BOD and MOM were both getting into a nice rhythm and the station's ratings were picking up. But when have corporate suits ever based a move on common sense? ::)

I've been listening to Don & Mike since I worked in the big Sac, and have followed the O'Meara show via podcasting from all over the world. It's a shame to finally see that legacy come to an end, if that is indeed what is happening.

What were they saying that would lead to you thinking that they were going to flip? I wasen't able to listen online today.

If in fact CBS does shift WJFK to sports, and from all the talk around town it does appear that it is going to happen. I would hope that the CBS suits go one step farther and switch WHFS, nee WPGC-AM with WJFK. That big 50 Kw daytime signal will add to WJFK's somewhat lopsided directional FM pattern.

It might even bring in enough additional sales to let that big expensive transmitter site pay for itself, and even it's low power night time signal would be able to attract more listeners than they have now...which is pretty much...none.

Pairing an AM/FM sports combo in WJZ AM/FM in Baltimore seems to be working well. It could do the same thing in Washington. Besides since the flip to WJZ-AM in Baltimore, the WJFK-AM calls are available.

It could even result in some WJFK-WJZ on air rivalry and cooperation. That could be a definate win-win, and a much better use of what is currently a throw away signal.

Have a safe and happy 4th everyone. The Old PD

Actually what stood out the most was that, at least with O'Meara's show, they said nothing. Usually when rumors about in the radio industry, the people behind the mics will openly dismiss them if they aren't true. But if they are true, they usually keep their mouths shut. Mike said on one occasion to the texters to stop asking questions he couldn't answer on the air. On the July 3 show he stumbled over more of BA's bad copy and muttered something along the lines of "I'm not going to miss this"...

That same show's rejoiner music was all about leaving, saying goodbye, etc. It was a theme I personally missed until someone else pointed it out to me. Robb said the other day, "Longevity: I think it's overrated." And Mike made a quit earlier this week I think about BA "booking one last guest."

There certainly seem to be a lot of little hints. BO&D and MOM haven't been promoting any upcoming events lately, but the Junkies have... Which jibes with the Washington Post article that mentioned the flip to sports, claiming the Junkies would be branded back as the Sports Junkies. The one that stuck out the most to me though was a rather sly quip from Buzz, concluding a news story: "The list goes on, we do not." If this is all really the end, I'll sure miss his subversive humor. :(

Tom Bigby, the man shaking things up in Dallas on CBS' sports frequency there, is rumored to be heading the changes at WJFK. He turned a Detroit station to #1. All this According to sources in Dallas. Fell free to dig.

This whole issue has been talked about and reported for weeks on dcrtv.com. I am in no way associated with the site, BTW, so this is NOT a plug. They usually blow the doors off all other media with reports on TV/Radio news in that region.

Mike O'Meara affiliate KCJJ in Iowa posted this on their Facebook page:

KCJJ We received notice from Westwood One that the Mike O'Meara will be rerun for the next thirty days and then will be no more. KCJJ is hopeful the show will be able to find a new home soon and be available to us again. A special goodbye segment that was taped earlier may be run this Friday. We will carry the show until the network stops sending it. CBS Radio sucks. And they can go to hell. And they suck!

The flip to sports has been the worst kept secret in radio, but it will no doubt be a shock to the listeners, both of WJFK's canned shows and especially the MOM audience across the US. So Big O and Dukes are on this week and from what I hear second-hand really dropping strong hints that this is it for their show. The Junkies are business as usual, and Mike O'Meara is on vacation again this week with a goodbye show on Friday, possibly maybe.

That's it. The only excuse I ever had to switch off the XM in DC is now gone. Between this and O&A, CBS Radio is now officially out of my life. :(

Busting up Chad and Oscar is another typical CBS dumb idea. I've read that Chad will stay on with a sports guy. I disliked The Sports Junkies since turning on The Morning Crash and finding THEM in its place, but then I'm not a talk radio fan anyway. Still...no ill wishes for them or for Mike O'Meara and crew...it sucks to see CBS continue to make any move but the right ones. I hope the rumor of Oscar landing at WPGC is true, not that I listen, he's paid his dues being bounced around the dial. And HFS needs to be let out of the closet at the tampon factory.

Sorry but I must disagree. While Dave Hughes does do a great job with DCRTV.com, Tybois Uphold does one better. His SVRTV,net was tops and the way he does the Wikipedia pages for ALL of the local radio and TV stations...Dave Hughes doesn't come close. Tybois Uphold ( the DUDE from/in Virginia )...he ROCKS !!!!!!!
