WJFN 970 gone country

I fell asleep listening last night. They went country early sunday. They had classic country a little before 7AM when I woke up. Strangely, a few christmas songs were still mixed in. I'm still hearing problems with the audio on 970. Everytime there is a peak especially in the bass or bass drum the audio drops suddenly. The bass seems to be reeking havok on the compression causing the volume to pump. I haven't heard what it sounds like on FM since I'm too far away to pick it up, the last time I listened to it it sounded a bit tinny with scratchy treble that sounded like low bitrate audio. The AM still had too much bass. maybe now that they have gone back to music they will take better care of their audio. sadly when stations get an FM simulcast the AM audio quality often forgotten. The AM is still the main station and covers areas that the FM can't. The FM station mainly covers parts of Jackson and can barely be heard in Brandon.

hearing some good tunes on this station. Maybe its my radio but the volume pumping is not as bad on my car radio or they tweaked it. Both AM and FM audio still needs work. FM sounds badly distorted during the station ID and sweeper. Sweeper sounds OK on the AM side.

Surprised that by now I have not seen news that this development has caused 96.3 to see if the WJFR calls are still available and 102.9 to start hunting around Beasley Road for some of those old Mac McAnally / Larry Raspberry and the Highsteppers / Little Feat albums.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those Little Feat and Larry Raspberry records. good stuff.

Listened off and on to WJFN today, audio on both AM and FM sounds better. Nice selection of tunes. I just hope that they don't start playing the same tired old 100 or so songs that other stations play once the new wears off.

Long time lurker, first time posting.

As a younger broadcaster, and Mississippian, thank you folks so very much for the ongoing history class of MS radio history.

This board and its stories are priceless.

On to the post...

JFN moved that FM translator into Jackson from Brandon to try to appease their biggest client at the time - Jackson Prep.

Mom and Pop Patriot were complaining about the signal quality, specifically versus WSFZ (Jackson Academy station) and their signal, which has improved drastically over the last 24 months or so...or post-Bill-Fulgham.

This prompted JFN to put the FM translator in place, initially in Brandon. Later, with the signal still being too poor on Lakeland Drive, JFN moved it to the MPB facility.

Ironically, only a few months (or weeks) later Jackson Prep severed their relationship with JFN, making way for the format change back to classic country.

I never understood why a school in Jackson would broadcast their games on a station in Brandon. Brandon football should be on WJFN, not Jackson Prep. Whats worse, Brandon and Pearl football are often heard on stations in Jackson, when both Brandon and Pearl both have local stations WJNT and WJFN. I've also heard Northwest Rankin on stations that can't be picked up at the Northwest Rankin school.

99.1 is OK in most parts of Jackson but you can barely hear it in brandon anymore unless you've got a good radio and the station in the delta isn't stepping on it.
The AM gets out much better in my neck of the woods.

How is 99.1's car signal in Brandon? I was at my mom's in Pocahontas on Christmas Eve and Day and it carried quite well out there. Better than I expected. I would guess Brandon is about as far from 99.1's transmitter as Pocahontas is, if not closer.

I'll be over in Brandon this weekend. I'll pop it on and take a listen.

As someone pointed out earlier, the sound has been tweaked significantly, over the last week or so, to cater to music as opposed to talk. Heard it in Richland the other day. Very clear.

99.1 cuts in and out in brandon, its not worth the frustration unless you are on a hill or have a good radio. I usually listen to the AM station since it is stronger over here. I may switch to the FM translator when I get within close range of the FM transmitter. You can actually get the FM pretty good on a car radio around Jackson, but on a cheap clock radio you're better off listening on AM unless you are within 10 or so miles of the FM. I don't think the FM station goes too much further than Brandon without drop-offs. The AM is on a pretty good frequency, Its a shame they can't get a little power increase. I get the AM pretty good at night over here. FM not so much. Nice music. I heard Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Thats something you just don't hear on the radio often these days.
