WJFN Brandon Translator

What happened to the 99.1 FM translator from WJFN 970. Lately it can hardly be picked up even in Brandon. It doesn't even stop on scan. Have the lowered the power or moved it? The AM station usually is easier to pick up outside of Brandon. But even in the city limits of Brandon, almost zilch from 99.1 FM.

99.1 is on the ETV studio tower at Ridgewood Rd. Now. It was moved several weeks ago. Don't know if they dropped the power recently or not.

Is it still licenced to Brandon? I was always under the assumption that an FM translator for an AM station was supposed to serve the same area as the parent AM station.

I just checked Radio Locator and the WJFN translator went from 250 watts in Brandon down to 99 watts at its new location in Jackson. I guess they figured they could increase their coverage into Jackson by moving the FM. and having the AM cover the rest. Where is the "studio" (if they actually have one) for WJFN? The old studio (WRKN) has been abandoned and is for sale.

No wonder I've been picking up 99.1 a lot clearly lately. I live in north Jackson, probably within a one- or two-mile radius of the transmitter.

Theoretically, the FM translator is still within the AM coverage area. You can go to the FCC CDBS site and check the technical info. They do have a studio in Brandon, but I don't know the exact location.

For a translator, 99.1 can get out pretty far. I was almost able to carry them to Vicksburg yesterday. There was interference with WYMX in western Hinds and Warren counties. The signal faded out before getting to Vicksburg proper. Northward, it can get to Flora before fading.

I know they are on the big self support tower at the ETV studio, but I don't know which direction the antenna is oriented.

Isn't in or close to downtown? I seem to recall them mentioning downtown when they had local programming.

A "fill-in" FM translator must cover *some part* of the same area covered by the primary station. It doesn't need to cover the *whole* coverage area of the primary station. (in fact, in most cases, because of the power limits for translators, the translator *cannot* cover the entire service area of the primary station)

All translators of AM stations are "fill-in" translators.

(third parties or non-commercial operators may run "non-fill-in" translators of FM stations, where the area served by the translator is outside the coverage area of the primary station)

WJFN FM can hardly be picked up in Brandon anymore but the low audio problem seems to have been fixed on the AM station. Its seems to be a lot louder that it was.
Speaking of low power, has Crossgates Baptist Church shut down their low power station on 104.3? It was dead air for a couple of weeks and now its completly gone. Its no longer mentioned on their website either.
