WJFN translator on the air?

Hey all -

I've noticed a dead carrier for the past week on 99.1 FM - the FM translator associated with WJFN 970 AM. I've only heard the WJFN audio on it one time, so they must have some bugs still associated with it.

BTW - The coverage of that translator is INCREDIBLE. I can seek right to the 250 Watts (originated from Brandon) all the way on my car stereo in Flora, Gluckstadt, and as far away as exit 12 on Interstate 20 (some 35 miles away!).

The only thing I can hear on 99.1 is bleed-over from Mix 98.7. It kinda ticks me off since it blocks me from getting Max 99 from Greenwood.

You think that's bad? Try to pick up WLKO and Mix98.7 out here in Forest. Mix 98.7 from Jackson and K-Love's WLKO from Meridian. Mix 98.7 bleeds over WLKO regularly. You go further east into Newton County and Mix 98.7 fades out. The same thing happens with Supertalk Mississippi and WOKK. WOKK drowns out Supertalk out of Jackson so if you have a radio with that will tune in 97.35 instead of 97.3 you can get Supertalk. As one goes east WOKK prevails.

It may have just been my (digital tuner) radio, but I was getting 98.7 clearly on 97.9, 98.1, 98.3, 98.5, 98.7, 98.9, 99.1, and 99.3 yesterday while driving in north Madison County. I was specifically trying to pick up WCKK 98.3 FM in Carthage, but no such luck.

Did they move their transmitter or increase power, or both? I first noticed the bleed-over to 99.1 two weeks ago while driving on 463 between Madison and Flora. I live off Northside Dr. between State and I-55 and I can hear it there as well.

Mix 98.7 is back on the main trans and according a their new mod monitor, no longer bleeding on 99.1 Yesterday was a tough day for anyone with a stick. The atmosphere was crazy! Someone had made a comment about their modulation recently, and I saw it for myself today--perfectly legal at 102 percent peaks.

I noticed that it had cleared up yesterday afternoon. Are they still using the old Sparta xmtr for backup or did they retune one of the 2 RCA 20F transmitters they inherited from 96.3? Ugh... I hated working on those combined 20F transmitters when they were at the original site!

Dont hold me to it but I believe it's an old RCA. You can definately tell a difference between it and the regular main.

Considering that that is a fringe area for both sticks, this shouldn't surprise anyone. As for WOKK prevailing to the east, well, considering they're in Meridian there's a good reason for that. ;-)

Greetings from Austria. :)

My buddy in the Delta says Max has dropped their more upbeat contemporary format for oldies, the same as the 106.9 in Crenshaw, MS. (I don't know where that is so I dunno if the coverage overlaps.) He also says they're advertising for help, but didn't specify what kind.

I was able to hear max in Vicksburg this weekend, they seem to be running the Kool Gold format from Dial Global. Same as we are doing here at WVBG

Is this sort of overlap in identical formats common in Mississippi? There's at least some overlap in coverage for WVBG, WYMX and that Crenshaw station. Maybe it's more common everywhere and I just never noticed. Today, passing through N Miss again, I noticed that two stations were carrying a similar format (on 92.3 and 101.3) right down to the same commercials. Turns out they're both in the same town! Seems like a waste of a transmitter. I mean, I can understand that no one in Vicksburg is listening to WYMX, but... Identical formats in the same town? ???

Before this supposed format change for WYMX (the second since around the holidays), they and 101.3 in Grenada were sharing the same satellited hot AC format. I also seem to recall WFTA Tupelo and WLZA Columbus at one time were sharing the same satellited AC format.

That reminds me. WLZA is running some contemporary format that's the same as WKDJ in Clarksdale, but carries Rick and Bubba in the morning.

I've done a lot of travelling across this wonderful country and the only other time I recall hearing such short-spaced duped satellite programming is next door in Alabama, where the ABC Solid Gold oldies format was on a couple of stations surrounding Birmingham.
