WJGH/WOLL Connection

I hope you all had a happy holiday season and will have a successful 2011. Over the last few weeks, I listened to a lot of radio in South Florida and even witnessed a format flip right before my ears. Among the stations I heard was WOLL.

The station is owned by CC and is mainly heard in the Palm Beach/Martin County area. I became fascinated with the station, especially on the trip back to Jax as I felt I was hearing our own WJGH (Magic 107.3.) I was recently informed the MD of WOLL scheduled the music for Magic during the station launch and prior to the hiring of a PD. It proved to be a good move as I was told the first PPM report showed Magic in the Top 3 in 25-54. Considering there were no promotions or jocks to generate on-air excitement this turned out to be pretty impressive. It also proved my point that adult listeners have been so desperate for something else to be offered in our market.

For a long time I talked about how the format was evolving and how it was becoming a very viable format in many markets in 25-54. WOLL was once a traditional oldies station. They have kept their Cool 105.5 moniker and today they are a gold based AC usually always in the Top 2 or 3 overall in the market. There are people on the station and it makes the station come to life. The morning show appears to be local and I'd like to see Magic either have one or simulcast one from a sister station. I began to think about the long term prospects for Greatest Hits in Jax.

I rushed to judgment initially because I saw the format operating within my own personal preferences and what my favorite stations broadcasting elsewhere were doing. I was also fearful we were going to re-live the horrors the last time the format was attempted. So again, I’m happy a skilled and experienced programmer prevailed. Markets are unique and so is competition and targets. I may have different ideas about special programming and music but in the end it’s all about selling and appealing to your target audience. In this case, you can have all that while giving adult listeners more to choose from. It's good for listeners and radio.

Recently I learned WOLL is considered AC because they feature some 90’s and 00’s titles, even though it’s not often. For now, Greatest Hits doesn't usually get newer than the mid 80's. WJGH has a lot of AC elements to it but that’s the nature of a lot of Greatest Hits formats. I now see WJGH as a long-term player in Jax with their female-leaning programming and being an alternative to WEJZ and Eagle. Cox Radio has a lock on the males so to me in makes sense for CC to take another route. Maybe now you can all understand why I always believed the scenario that exists in Tampa where WRBQ and that market's Eagle brand seem to co-exist just fine. Choice always beats no choice. I realize you can’t make judgments on a book or two but given the music variety many listeners seek and the potential for growth I’m witnessing in the format, I believe the long-term prognosis is good. Ah yes, even a good thing can get screwed up.

I always believed there was an underserved market in Jax and I’m happy to see it finally filled. From a strategy standpoint, it would not surprise me to see KISS become Hot AC in the short term with WJGH as a gold-based AC in the long-term. What do you think? A few more songs in certain genres here and there and Greatest Hits can be anything you want it to be – just as all the various forms of AC are today to satisfy the uniquenss of the market. The public's tastes change and what may not test well today may test well tomorrow. It can keep things interesting and top programmers will respond to that. I don’t think I’ll ever understand why this market took so long to offer a Greatest Hits format, especially after it reinvented itself and performed well overall in many PPM markets but better late than never.

I agree with your assessment. Cox has a lock on men so peeling some women away from Eagle and some from WEJZ is exactly the slot. Fun format, imaging definitely leans female and the music appears to be right on target. Now, get some strong talent that provides more fun factor than eagle's robo-format and Lite's fluff, you've got more than a niche. Talent that understand fun, ppm and have passion for the music.

The major market CBS classic hits stations are doing well all over the country with this approach, though not with quite the female lean you hear from KOOL in WPB.

Being the new year, one would think talent would be showing up soon, i.e., first quarter, IF that's in the cards for Magic.

We shouldn’t discount upper end 25-54 males in being attracted to the format as well. It’s happening elsewhere and it will happen here too. Just because you are a guy doesn’t mean all you like is rock, country or talk. The music presented seems to be getting better by the day. Adding the right talent to complement the great music variety seems the next logical step and I hope it happens soon. Effective promotion is needed too.

As someone who lived in South Florida for 25 years and who still visits there often, I recognize a good number of similarities between the Jacksonville and Palm Beach markets. Yes, there are some significant differences too. But I don’t believe it’s just coincidence that our WJGH sounds like a WOLL/WMXJ combo.

Recognizing this is a North Fl board, let me just say this. WMXJ as a Miami hybrid oldies/classic hits station that can be heard in the southern part of PB (Boca/Delray) where the station does very well among the significantly large NYC transplants who listened to WCBS FM for decades. Considering WOLL plays lots of mainstream 80’s songs perfect for a listen at work sound and I would suspect there are a good number of listeners who probably give both stations a listen. Imagine the impacts if that sound were combined. Well, from what I can tell, we have that in Magic.

I’ve noticed WJGH occasionally plays “Smooth” by Santana featuring Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20. My lord I really love that song. Hmmm, if I remember that’s a late 90’s song, isn’t it? WOLL’s tagline by the way is the Greatest hits of all time. I like that and I never believed in all the silly lines of demarcation that if a song comes from a certain year, it’s never heard. You mention CBS Radio and I believe the extrordinary success seen in CBS FM comes from personality and song presentation that isn't always bound from the 60's to the 80's. Anyway, with each passing day the music variety on Magic is becoming even more pronounced. I believe many listeners who just settled on a station as the lesser of all evils for way too many years in Jax will find this to their liking. But the ratings is the ultimate report card, isn’t it? More and more I'm worrying about that far less.

If it seemed I was discounting upper end males that is not my intent. One of the nice things of being a more mature person is you're not as easily swayed by peer pressure to like a certain genre, especially if you're a guy. If one needs any proof look no further than how male numbers jump to Christmas music with almost the same frequency as female. It's happened pre and post PPM.

The music getting better day by day I'd take a little issue with. Stations today do a music test and implement it, they don't tweak it day by day. Those stations playing currents deal with that issue but in this format the only thing you might be hearing is a PD that's paying close attention to rotation and mix of a good test. Promotion is important and it'll be interesting to see how strongly this station embraces the Magic image from a promotions and branding standpoint.

I know nothing of how the two markets compare so I'll yield to you there. There's clearly an influence from WOLL back to Magic. I would agree it's not coincidence as they have a competitive formula in WPB and must've realized it would fill a hole and compete effectively Jacksonville.

Smooth is a late 90s song and yes you will hear newer music on WOLL as well. Santana being "in format" and the song fitting the mix... I'd assume they tested it, it did well and just "went with it" since the target tolerates the song or even wants it.

CBS FM as are all the CBS classic hits stations are just like any other radio station, they just happen to play older songs. In other words what they do presentation wise competes head to head with AC, Country, Hot AC etc.

Finally you have the current battle or WRBQ and Eagle in Tampa where both are doing well with Q winning the overall battle. I can't speak to the reasons why but my gut tells me it's more fun and has more personality. The huge difference is that Q is the heritage station in Tampa, Eagle the newcomer. In Jacksonville that is reversed. Ultimately, given time and patience I believe the same scenario could play out in JAX but it might take a bit for Magic to overtake Eagle and impact EZ since they both have heritage. Will CC have the patience for that and execute all the elements necessary to make it happen.

Micro, I very much appreciate your response but perhaps I need to explain my position a bit more.

Competition is the nature of the radio business. Personally I just can’t stomach a lot of things I have witnessed even in our own Jax market – the seek and destroy model. If there is truly a niche for a new station in the mix that fills a hole, I say right on. There are some super fine people at WEJZ who rise to the occasion every day no matter the challenge and they will continue to do so.

Eagle is the stalest music station in Jacksonville where most of their songs have surpassed the 7000 play mark over past 7 years. Yet, they get numbers. It’s not really unusual because there is a market here for rock-oriented hits. Traditional oldies stations played those same 300 songs for decades and the audience didn’t grow tired of them. They just kept getting older and that was the downfall – not song repetition.

I believe strongly there was a need for Magic. The rock fans have what they want. But for those who wanted more diversity in classic hit music than a token Bill Withers or Dobie Grey or wanted more variety than Jimmy Buffet sandwiched between 2 rock songs now have a place to go. For those who like a lot of the older stuff on EJZ but hate the currents, they now have a place to go. To me, it was always about giving listeners more options that have a proven track record of success in a very challenging environment.

Personally, I can only hope CC recognizes the potential they have with the format and don’t decide on the cheap route. I know I’m bucking reality. As far as music getting better by the day comment, it would take too long to fully explain so the short answer is I like the positioning of songs and there are different songs featured each day probably as part of some super slow rotation. There’s room for everybody as far as I’m concerned.

I’d like to clarify a bit more. Some on this board who are in the know will tell you that just because a format works elsewhere, does not guarantee it will work here. I agree – nothing is a slam dunk especially if you don’t put forth the effort.

There is a part of the business of radio that I find very interesting and that would be the consulting and the research part. I’m sure market studies were done to justify a flip but here’s my take. I may be off base but comments on this board after all are opinions.

The PB market is almost identical to Jacksonville if you look at market size. For reasons that are hard to explain, those of us who lived in either Miami-Dade or Broward as I had regarded the PB market as a place that seemed further away than the miles indicated. It had a totally different vibe and aside from the climate, it was unique on to itself – just like Jax is as major city compared to other Florida major cities.

Even today, especially in central and western parts of the county, there are middle-aged people who were born and raised in PB County just as one would find in lots of Jax. There are conservative areas of the West Palm area where there is still evidence of Southern heritage and family values similar to what we see in Jax and not as apparent in the counties south of PB.

What does this all mean for radio? For as long as I can remember some very long-time radio stations and formats have stood the test of time that resemble more of a Jax mix than a Miami/Ft. Lauderdale one. WIRK has been doing country forever as there is a market that supports it. While I lived down that way, WIRK was #1 or #2 almost all the time. WRMF is a long term success similar to our home-grown WAPE. While rock formats have moved from station-to-station in very S Fla, the Gator (WKGR) still rocks all these years just as we had in Rock 105. Rush performs better in PB than in Miami although not quite as well as here as WJNO is AM only and the significant northern transplants have other ideas.

PB has seen incredible growth that has changed the market. Jax is experiencing tremendous growth as well. Those moving here are not all from the south. With that comes different musical tastes among lots of other things. Maybe more info anyone would care to have but as I look at the success of WOLL and I also look at the tremendous success of WMXJ in PB that’s part of another market, I can’t help but think potential as I see an environment that isn’t as different as one would think. Anyway, that’s my thought process and IMHO if CC can recognize Jax as a market in transition and if they can capitalize on those changes, it will be a win-win for them and listeners.

Well, it appears it's in the cards. Per Media Eyes Only, Magic is seeking talent for ALL dayparts. I have no idea where CC is in the process, but bringing life to the format is a must. There are so many who have come and gone in our market. It makes you wonder if even one familiar Jax voice will be a part of "Magic's Original Air Team."
