WJIB Does It Again!!

Bob Bittner's "little station that could", WJIB-740, again scored surprisingly well in the first phase of the 2005 Summer Arbitrons (released yesterday, August 23rd).

It tied for 20th (in overall 12-plus listeners) with WBOS-92.9. I suspect the (cannot divulge the exact share due to Radio-Info.com policies) the station got must be the biggest share number the 740 frequency has had since at least the mid-1970's heyday of the then-occupant of that frequency, folk/rock formatted WCAS.

Congratulations, Bob! You've done it again!

WJIB has ben playing her music for the past 5 years.

And the original WJIB 96.9 FM played Susie music for many years before. She was a favorite of Anne Williams who had a great program of new age music on the old JIB with the "bells". Ciani built her own syntheziser which she eventually donated to her high school alma mater, Thayer Academy.

Not many outlets in this city for her music -unfortunately.

I think it's great that WJIB shows up in the ratings. What I think is pathetic is that WBOS an FM station that covers the entire market gets the same ratings as WJIB which is a 250 watt day/5 watt night AM station. *Knows it will never happen, but wonders aloud what the ratings on WBOS would be like if WJIB's programming were simulcast there*.

I have to say that 250 watts really gets out. I can hear the station quite well at my parents' home in West Peabody. Sometimes I can pick it up when I'm there at night, as well. I've listened to the day signal as far as the MA/NH line.
Is there a reason why 'JIB's 250w has such a large area? Anyway, congrats to Mr. Bitner on a great job.

One reason may be because it's omnidirectional. Many AM stations with higher wattage have hampered coverage in some areas due to directional signals.

Also, the lower the frequency on the AM dial, the better the coverage for the same given amount of wattage.

Believe it or not, on a good radio (GE SuperRadio, or my Honda Car Radio) they can be heard here on down-east coast of Maine. I can even get Bob's WJTO next door at 730 at a few shorefront locations here on Mount Desert Island and at Schoodic Point, Winter Harbor(right across Frenchmans Bay from Bar Harbor). WJIB also can be heard along southern coast of Nova Scotia at Yarmouth and Cape Sable. Not bad for 250watts eh?

I presume you're listening on a sensitive receiver like a car radio? I doubt the average table radio would pick it up much outside 128. I'd say one factor that helps WJIB is the lack of co-channel signals. Wasn't there a Canadian station on 740 that went dark years ago, but has not been officially deleted? Here in the crowded Northeast, signals tend to get stepped on long before they fade out.

CHWO Toronto is still there on 740. They went dark for a little while a few years ago, and came back on with Adult Standards. It doesn't affect WJIB in the daytime, but on a strong skywave night they can cut up WJIB's 5 watt night power just a few miles away.
