I can understand Mr. Bittner's reluctance to hire a staff and run those pesky infomercials. The fact he gave away his age of 39 ( ) shows that he's forgotten more about this racket than what young bucks like me will ever know; and that probably includes horror stories of high-maintenance co-workers and/or people he's actually hired over the years. If the business model works at WJIB, why fix it if it's not broke?

Twice a week the diet pills & colon cleansing people call or write me. They want to be on WJIB SO BAD they can taste it, as WJIB is virgin territory for them to reap from. And money from the diet pills etc would definitely pay for on-air DJ's. But then what happens to WJIB? Too much talk and too much hawking of questionable products.

Has anyone ever noticed how the integrity and sound quality of some NEWS/TALK radio stations become compromised by the airing of these shows?

Now that I've said all of this, I am likely going to have PBS-style advertising from local businesses on WJTO, later this year or next year. A sponsor, a day: "Today's music is made possible by...."


I never understood why you didn't start doing this on JIB years ago. I would think that Cambridge Savings Bank for example, would pay a couple of thousands dollars a month to have a bank of 15 second sponsor mentions that said "the next hour of commercial free music is brought to you by Cambridge Savings.

I know most of your regular weekday listeners would rather hear that than not being able to listen on Sunday morning when I assume you sell time to those Churches. I don't know how anyone can listen to that Refuge Baptist Church service. It sounds like the Minister is up at the pulpit and the microphone is in the last pew.

I know people in my area of Winthrop, Revere and Chelsea were very happy when you stopped selling time to the French group in morning drive.

Finally Bob, do you still have those radio Netherlands tapes. I never came over to pick them up.

my god you really said the word "C-Qaum AM STEREO", yes I'm a B I G am fan (the first stereo broadcast was in the 1950's from a AM station in Mexico, but the FCC in the sixties said FM needs a helping hand and granted FM the STEREO "BRAND". But FM radio does not curve with the earth's "grooves" fm only goes as far as the eye can see. But a AM station in Chicago @ 890khz, in New York @ 770khz, Oklahoma City @ 1520khz & 640khz Los Angeles that all @ one time broadcast a stereo signal, did cover damn near all 48 cont. states. Thats hy AM stereo is still big in canada\

I don't remember 770 kHz in New York City (WABC) ever being in AM stereo.

They used the Kahn system, pursuant to an STA, beginning 2/19/1979. Long before that time, the entire plant had been upgraded to stereo, and when they went on the air with it only one production console was not stereo. I don't recall when they stopped, but by the time the Motorola system was adopted industry-wide it was too late to make a difference, as most AM operations had already switched to non-music formats.

Too bad there are some out there who can't appreciate WJIB as the "pro-bono" true treasure that it is.

IMHO, we should be doing all we can to nurture and support WJIB and the few others out there like it . (KBRD in Olympia, WA, and KCEA in Atherton, CA come to mind as two other examples).

Last year, WJIB became listener supported and continues to be. You can send your NON tax-deductable contibutions to WJIB. 443 Concord Ave, Cambridge MA, 02138. Checks should be payable to Radio Station WJIB. Early this year, those who contributed last year received a nifty newsletter by (postal) mail from Bob. It's potentially a collectors' item, if you go in for such things. Not sure what, if anything, Bob plans for folks who contribute this year. The first newsletter will be a tough act to follow.

Folks who sent/send $20 or more LAST year AND THIS year get the 2007 newsletter AND the yet to be printed 2008 newsletter.

The 2008 goal of $82,000. is pretty close to being met.... presently, about $66,000. in. Taking longer this year. Likely due to the fact that this whole thing did not have any Globe and Herald press coverage this year like it had last year. And since people are wondering how they're going to heat their homes this -coming winter.....

Maybe that way you could also give tax deductible receipts or whatever they're called. More of an incentive for "listener-members" to contribute.

Actually, I have not any trouble at all getting the funds. It would be nice to give them the ability to write off contributions, however, after just investigating what it would take to go non-profit, best be to stay as is. Such (non-profit) would involve an immense amount of paperwork. Should I have that burden, I would have no time for radio and music. Anyone who contributes to keep hearing the music of WJIB does so just for that purpose; none other needed. I imagine that someone could donate their time and do all that paperwork for WJIB, but I don't want to count on that... the default person would still be me for the paperwork.
