WJIB

Post by Vahey on the orig Friends and Lovers of WJIB fb group says they will move to the WEZE 590 tower in Medford with the 720 signal with 5 kW day, 189w night along with the WJTO move to 750 once that's approved.
At first it was said to be 1 kW day; also this is first I've heard of a new tower location unlike the current Concord Ave Camb

Waiting for confirmation...

OK good! As i just said on that group, the orig. announcement of the plan had been said by Garabedian to do 1 kW day and he had said that was approved but now they plan to do even more, and from a specific site. On that link I note the "Pending (filed on--) 7-17-24" part

Maybe I missed that part...been traveling etc!
Seeing the FCCdata etc, I was unaware that what is now WXTK once had the WJIB calls (1990-91)--when they were still on 94.9...
Wiki: "The FM call letters were changed to... WJIB in 1990 (shortly after the call sign was dropped by 96.9 FM in Boston, now WBQT), and then WOCB-FM once more in 1991." (WXTK entry)

Now I see the column and thank you. I don't think anyone else had remarked on this bit of news yet. "If it's news to you...it's news to us." Only saw KV's post about it earlier.

The 1000-watt application was made first, in order to get something on the books that would enable WJTO to go to 750 and WJIB to begin moving to 720 while there's still uncertainty (I assume) over how much longer WJIB can stayv at its current site, and while the work was being done to secure a lease at the 590 site.

My assumption now is that Garabedian will do everything in one move - go from 740 at Fresh Pond to 720 in Medford, but they were smart to build in an interim option if they need it. Doing AM work is expensive and difficult and there aren't many engineers left who can do it, so having a plan B is a great idea.

Is it really worth the effort to spend the time and $$$ but still only have 189 watts at night?
Not being negative, but does the station make enough money to get a return on the investment?

The 189 watts is a bonus. WJIB has been effectively a daytimer its entire life. It's about to get a much bigger daytime signal, and it will at least have a usable night signal now in a few more northern suburbs.

"" ... does the station make enough money to get a return on the investment? ""

Currently WJIB has no sales department and no ad agency (and as far as I know, no commercials). It is more of a hobby than a business.

But being near the lower end of the dial should give the station some value.

Bob Perry said on FB that the WJTO move will happen soon, but they had to repair the transmitter after a lightning hit--and it will be retuned to the new frequency (with WJIB, now under Garabedian ownership, being able to move then as well... )

Ahh, that's why they've been on & off for the past few weeks and, when on, at reduced power, the same for both day and night (maybe critical hours power/pattern?).

Yes. And on the Bob's Memory Station FB group (his) he posted yesterday, "Soon WJTO will be moving to 750. We hope there is a signal improvement there as well. I will post more on that when it will happen. I will give everyone a heads up and announce the change on the air before it happens" He had posted about the lightning hit back on July 16.

Stations don't have "an ad agency". Clients do. An ad agency prepares and places advertising for advertisers and buys time or presence in commercial media.

While I shudder when linking to Wikipedia, this is a fairly accurate description of what an ad agency does:

Radio station sales people visit direct accounts (ones with no agency) or agencies to present their sales pitch.

This was quite informative and helpful, David. I'm sure I'm not the only one on these Forums who learned something today. Thank you.

Dumb question, but isn't WOR blasting away on 710 at 50,000 watts really going to mess with a 189 watt signal on 720 at night except in very close proximity?

That's better than having a 50,000 watt station on their own frequency (740 CFZM).

The last time I was in Boston at night, WJIB would've been listenable if it wasn't for heavy interference from CFZM.

Around Aug of 2017 WJIB's FM translator went on air on 101.3.
I remember going to a park nr WJIB studios to pick it up and record. At that time a pirate station was running on that frequency and was interfering with it, though WJIB's translator won out as you got closer. Those expecting to hear rap were surprised when Bob's standards came on, with a bit more power. They eventually moved their illegal broadcast elsewhere. A copy of their "announcement":

Bob Perry said the WJTO move to 750 will be very soon; they'll let us know when, "here and on the air" (on the orig WJIB Friends and Lovers group as well as Bittner's Mem. Station group)

Perry said to me, "The WJIB new TX site work is starting to happen but they can not go to 720 until WJTO has moved, It will be still a little while while until WJIB is all set to go." (WJIB Fr & Lovers)
