WJJK continues to slide

Jack 104.5 is now #9 in Indy, down two spots from the last rating period and down 4 from Fall '04. Think Jack is dead in the Indianapolis water in 6 months? 2 years? Think Emmis is glad that WENS became Hank instead of Jack?

I'm really surprised the ratings bleeding hasn't stopped yet. I had expected it to remain in the top 10, but that doesn't look to be too likely.

There are a handful of new people to radio on the Variety Hits page that think the Jack format is the greatest thing since sliced bread. As can clearly be seen on 104.5 in Indy, Jack is a time-killer until Susquehanna gets sold. No costs for DJ's. No costs for programming research. Just play a hodge podge of songs until the station's sold.

They are only down 1 share from a year ago, you all make it sound like they are on their deathbed with a 1 or 1.5 share like WENS was. Also, their 25-54 numbers could be just fine, 12+ isn't really important

lol if ENS went Jack and have the ratings Jack at 104.5 has. What would all you be saying. Look at how Jack has improved 97.1

Not if it went from 1.5 to 6 to 5 like it would have if ENS had gone Jack and gotten the same ratings as WJJK. It would have been that at first, but I'd still be noting the rapid slide at this point

Almost every station that has any kind of successful launch drops in the next book. Why? Because the marketing and buzz drops after the first two months. So while it was premature to predict WJJK was going to be a top 3 station, it's also premature to say they're in a ratings free-fall. It's interesting though. Many of the posts on this board decry the lack of jocks on Jack stations being one of the reasons it won't survive. I have several non-radio friends who listen to the station and love it. According to this little focus group, they like the variety, not knowing what song might be next. And sadly, they would be very disappointed if the station ever adds jocks. Makes you wonder if one bad jock does more damage than 10 good personalities can overcome.

I would say the one to watch is Hank. I have a feeling, they're going to drop about a share this book and over the next 12 months level out at about a 2.5-3 share. Still better than Real, but it will be impossible to sell since almost all of the audience will share with WFMS and advertisers are notorious for ignoring #2 country stations unless they have a lot of exclusive cume... It's just a guessing game though.

There's a lot more demand for a 2nd country than for what Jack plays. You can get that music on several other stations in Indy. Jack would be a bigger hit if not for the arrival of the new WKLU. The Track might even hurt them too.

Why on earth quote 12+ numbers- NOBODY in real radio ever uses them.

Jack is #4 25-54. "Continues the to slide"? Now long can one "slide" when they've been #1 and are still Top 5? Jack wasn't even in the format you're referring to from Fall 2004! They've been in Jack mode for about 6 months, if that long.

All stations go up and down- why didn't you say WIBC is sliding or WHHH is sliding?

C'mon, anti-Jack geeks. Don't look so desperate.

It's called "wishful thinking". These folks hate Jack, they don't get Jack and, just like a politician, will say ANYTHING to further their view.

"Continues to slide"- really funny, since they've been Top 5 for about 6 months.
Had they been on the air for a couple of years, peaked, THEN had 3-4 down books in a row- THAT is a slide.

I suspect Jack is sliding all the way to the bank.

Now it's a "rapid slide". First down trend since they signed-on. What ARE you Hoosiers smoking?

Great point. And, I'll go you one further- most of the anti-Jack fervor comes from...DISC JOCKEYS! They see Jack stations succeeding in jockless mode nearly everywhere and it scares the hell out of them.

You are right about bad jocks- and it's mostly bad jocks who are scared s*%tless of Jack's success.

That being said, I've previously predicted (and still believe) that most Jack/ Charlie/Mike/Louie stations will have personalities. They'll be worked in slowly and won't be the typical liner readers and morning zoos- they'll be tailored for the station and the local markets.

Hey oldies cat...how long have you worked for Susquehanna?

slide

Never have. I don't think I even know anybody working or them. All I know is what I see and what I see are more anti-Jack whiners looking for ANYTHING they can manipulate to try & hide Jack's success (not just in Indy but nationwide).

You gotta admit- the original poster either doesn't know how to read radio ratings or is just desperate to try and make Jack look like less than the rousing success it is in most markets.

A little lesson in chronology for you:

-WKLU has been on the air way before Jack

-people want the variety on ONE STATION

-Jack is #4 25-54 adults in Indy. That's pretty healthy since they've
only been on-the-air for six months or so.

Now, The Track is a whole separate issue. And, depending on how they market it could affect Jack (or the AC stations more directly).

Hi everybody... Just a little correction based on the just released summer book. WJJK is now 6th 25-54 adults (down from 3rd in the spring) WKLU is 3rd (up from 7th in the spring).

However it should be noted that just 1 share separates 6th and 3rd in Indy's very tight 25-54 race.

Now back to your regularly scheduled arguing... GO!

Re: WJJK

The current version of WKLU has nothing to do with the one that's been on way before Jack. The new WKLU didn't really phase in until shortly before Jack came in. WKLU didn't have their current signal until after the Jack debut.

Re: WJJK

Thanks for the correction- I was told 4th by 2 sources. But that is a very tight race and I'll again suggest nobody at Jack is preparing to jump off any bridges these days.

Jack/Steppenwolf

I guess we can now conclude "Steppenwolf" did his/her homework and saw the same thing the rest of the country is seeing- the "Jack/VH" format successful in market after market (with few duds).

See what happens when you actually look up the ratings info? You get the real picture.
