WJJL - Freakin' Sad

I've watched over the years as the station that I started with in 1976 has evolved into a giant pile of poop. Some of you know that great talent, and some not-so-great (had to include that so that it didn't look like I was not able to get into any of my hats) have walked the halls in "The Falls."

When I look at their website, I get the same creepy feeling that you get when you realize that you're watching a really bad porno, or you just woke up in the back of someone else's car in the parking lot of Mickey Rats. You just want to wash.

What's going on there? After what I've seen there for the last few years, who's to say that Joanie Whackjob would do any worse.
.
They may have acquired the title of "Biggest Waste Of Electricity in Western New York."

Somebody please buy it...let Hager run it. Give it to Slick for Father's Day. Anything.

Tony,

Can you just imagine Mr & Mrs Talbot and Dorothy Shank rolling in their respective plots? And we thought that programming wasn't so good! LOL

Kal

They have no live personalities anymore, correct? Also, what's the deal with that timer thing at the top of the hour? It seemed whatever song was playing went into auto fade at the top of the hour. Last year, I heard a song go into auto fade about 10 seconds after it started. Did they fix that yet? It sounds like block programming is the only thing paying the bills. A few months back, the middle of the afternoon, the oldies ended and I heard some Native American show come on -- it wasn't The Smokin' Joe Hour, was it?.

The Talbot era seems pretty good in comparison.

Magoo, Good to see you posting here. Hope you're well. If you're not writing a daily blog, you should be... maybe even a newspaper column. Your metaphors and alliterations are hilarious. WJJL? Who knows. Most of us have our hands full keeping our own house in order. The entire AM band may be in peril as a result of the economy, IBOC and changes in technology and the way listeners use it. It is, no doubt, a long way from the grand days in the Hotel Niagara.

They probably can't afford it but I'd try to find a satellite oldies or standards format and put it on the bird all day. Better yet, sell it to someone who can!

No, thats correct. The fateful day was an article published on March 24th that the morning show host was taken into custody as party of a child pornography investigation. I actually knew the guy. Just like always, its never the people you think it is.

In any case, it seemed time stopped after that, as the morning host updated the website, produced/hosted morning show, board-op'd live broadcasts, etc. They carried Niagara University sports (hockey basketball, etc) and for a bit had the Bandits.

Magoo's hilarious analogy of a bad porno..Fantastic

full disclosure; worked there from 97-99 off and on. It's truly sad whats happened

Give it to Harv Moore and Dan Neaverth, and let them do a '50s/'60s format. Let 'em upload VTs from home so they wouldn't have to fight over who got stuck getting up at 4:30AM. At this point, they'd probably do a couple of hours a day for free - or at least for trade.

Recently, while in Niagara falls I was expecting to find some great oldies at 1440 on the dial, but instead there was some talk show airing around 10:45 or so in the morning.

It sounded local, and I'm not trashing the host, but I think the music would have sounded better at a time when there's already too much talk in the Buffalo/Niagara market.

I understand that the talk show that followed may have been an infomercial, but that too has to go. It is scaring the listener away rather than drawing attention to the station.

I think WHLD was actually in the Hotel Niagara when it signed on , Not JJL.

JJL was originally on 1st street, and eventually at 1224 Main st, before moving out to West Seneca.

HLD of course, went to Grand Island.

Now, go get me another mint julip...
Sincerely,
Norma Talbot

Where is "Joann", anyway? Did "she" get into trouble for filing that phony FCC Form 316 over WJJL a couple of years or so ago?

I still can't get over that...a message board troll actually filing an FCC form. The phone number on the filing was a Sprint cell phone, if I remember right...

ETA: A Virgin Mobile cell phone. The dismissed application from 2004 is still in the FCC database today:

I started at 'JJL. What an amazing list of alumni... I won't start it for fear of leaving someone out, but the list is quite impressive.

Those days are gone. I had some amazing times there.

I was at WJJL from 1971-1973..and my first day there was doing the 5-signoff show during the summer..with Thom Darro as PD..Tom Talbot was GM and owner..and yes it was on the mezzaninie floor of the old Hotel Niagara. In late 1969 WHLD was my very first station doing the religous tapes on Sundays..and they were (as their ID said)

...located in the luxurious Parkway Motor Hotel..just off the roaring rapids in Niagara Falls, NY. It's 12 noon and time for "The World Tomorrow"..Garner Ted Armstrong..bringing you the Plain Truth about todays news..and the prophesies of The WORLD TOMORROW...

The hotel studios were beautiful..(Niagara not Parkway) I ran the board for Jimmy Thompson's Genesee Beer newscasts..and for Dorothy Shanks..some really good talent there..Where's Voice Guy Jack? He should ring in on this one...

I'm truly sorry to hear how they have fallen apart..are they still using the same stick near Hooker Chemical?

I have to do it...

Gary McNamara
Melanie Pritchard
Craig Nigrelli
Dave McKinley
Howard Simon
Marie Bonacci
Ken Casey
Joe Chile
Tom Langmyer
John Murphy
Tom Bauerle

And the list goes on beyond my memory.

Probably the two most famous WJJL alumni were George "Hound Dog" Lorenz and Ramblin' Lou Schriver.
Also Jerry Ferrell and Johnny Wydra. Plus about a hundred others.

Marie Bonacci

 WOW! The same Marie Bonacci from the Magic 102 days?

Hostess/disc Jockette for Midnight magic on Magic 102?
Where the only requirement is Nudity?
That was Amazing radio! Thanks Mary! Miss you lots!
(I was a listener)

She used to say in her promos "I'll bring the music...you bring the baby oil"

She stole my attention away from listening to casette tapes, and even today, I'm sure she'd steal my attention away from listening to an mp3 player or whatever...someone should hire her! (and keep her local!)

Hey kids...Indulge me one more time.

I believe that one of WNY's biggest cheerleaders, Barry Lillis has a varsity sweater from the Talbots, and I think John Murphy's lovely wife, Sheila, did some time there too.

Uh, Magoo...not sure but as I remember it, John's lovely wife is not Sheila Murphy, but the lovely Mary (Travers), former WKBW-TV reporter and now the Town Supervisor for Orchard Park.

You're forgiven, it's been a long time since both of us left town.

I'm thinkin' that Murph's wife is Mary Travers Murphy (Orchard park Town Supervisor) and Sheila Murphy are two different people. Sheila being the former WGR 55 and Channel 2 anchor woman and Mary Travers Murphy being married to Channel 4 sports anchor John Murphy, she being a WJJL alumna and Channel 7 consumer reporter.

Question is, does Lillis have Sheila's sweater or Travers-Murphy's sweater and if so, does John know about all of this and furthermore, will Murph challenge Lillis to a duel on Goat Island.

All this and more coming up after a break from your local stations.
