WJJZ Imaging Tweak?

It's funny how if Wired or Q does something off-beat at 2:35 in the morning, there's 50 posts on here, but WJJZ does something, IMO, fairly significant (or what could be) and no posts. :)

Anyhow, am I one of the first to notice that WJJZ seems to be using the term "smooth jazz" less and less? DJ's like Michael Tozzi and Frank Childs, during most breaks, are saying everything but "smooth jazz." Referring to the station as WJJZ 106.1 "The Smoothest Place on Your Radio."

Even some of the liners from the deep voice guy (John Butterfield) (?) don't say "smooth jazz."

To odd thing is that not all the hosts are saying this. Perhaps some of the older voicetracks haven't been updated yet, and the website still refers to the station as "smooth jazz," but for most of the hour to go by without hearing one mention of "smooth jazz," and instead hearing WJJZ 106.1 "The Smoothest Place on Your Radio," definetely means, (I do think), that we have an imaging change on our hand.

And to be honest, I think the station SHOULD stop calling itself "Smooth Jazz." I hardly ever listen at all. Remember when I used to be one of the biggest listeners on this board? Now I listen to XM's smooth jazz channel constantly, and if I want a dose of regular smooth jazz radio, I listen to Harrisburg's WSJW which plays much less AC and R&B. Almost every other song on WJJZ is AC or R&B. I'm not sure if that's the main reason for the apparent imaging adjustment, or if this is in response to WJJZ's "not-as-great-as-it-used-to-be" ratings, but it is worth noting.

Gosh, I hope not. That would mean that they're not only headed for direct competition with sister-station WDAS-FM...but they're doing it at the worst possible time since WRBN is now on the air as well.

Maybe they'll just go Alternative. ;)

I thought OGL tweaked tonight.

Scanning the dial tonight at around 6:55, I heard "All Right Now" by Free, I was in shock, it was the short 45 version, but it was nice to hear on OGL. I thought there was a change coming, but after that, I was fed the Four Tops and the usual Motown diet, so I fled to YSP. It was nice to think a change was a commin', but I should of known, that is taboo on OGL.

Like most stations in this day and age, they are concentrating on catering to a very particular audience as opposed to playing a specific type of music. So calling the station "Smooth Jazz" has certainly become something of a misnomer. Dropping it is understandable but completely unnecessary. It's how the station is identified and it's been mixing smooth jazz with adult contemporary for years and years and years. Ratings have been fine for the most part so I honestly don't see why they'd want to make any changes at all.
