WJKL sold to EMF

From the current issue of Broadcasting and Cable:
WJKL(FM) Elgin (Chicago), Ill.
PRICE: $17 million
BUYER: Educational Media Foundation (Richard Jenkins, president); owns 180 other stations, including WCLR(FM) and WSRI(FM) Chicago
SELLER: Elgin Broadcasting Co. Inc. (Richard Jakle, president)
FACILITIES: 94.3 MHz, 6 kW, ant. 328 ft.
FORMAT: Christian Contemporary

That's right, it sold to the "K-LOVE" folks. A couple of observations: first (a minor point), calling WCLR and WSRI Chicago stations is an exaggeration. More importantly, though, maybe one could assume that WJKL was not necessarily overvalued, but a non-profit paying that much for the station? Looks like they really wanted to gain a presence in the Chicago market.

Another sad day in radio history. That is too bad that EMF feels they need to go in and buy stations all over theocuntry for the 30 or 50 so listeners in each market to keep them afloat.

I hope local ownership of radio returns again in a few years when things get regulated more than they are again, then we will have no more K-LOVE crap like this. Ugh!!

It was going to happen anyway. WJKL as a locally owned station was nothing more then a pimped out station anyway before EMF LMAed it. Ever since The Fish went under, its the only source for CCM in the area unless people want to listen to WYLL at 1:00 in the morning.

For what they're paying, its takes more than 50 listeners "to keep them afloat". And the only reason they can buy - is because someone is selling.

How strange. At one time (in my prior life), I smoked many joints in the 'JKL control room back in the "Fox" free form album rock days in the mid-70s!

I for one am glad to see this happen. Now, it looks like K-Love is here to stay. I listen quite a bit to K-Love and Moody.
As a fan of contemporary Christian music I would miss K-Love if they went away. It's nice to have them available.
By the way, do you think they will ever upgrade the signal to HD radio?
