WJLA in DC down 68% at 4PM with Anderson Cooper

DCRTV.COM is reporting that WJLA Channel 7 is down 68% in the ratings at 4PM since the debut of Anderson Cooper in September compared to the ratings they were getting with Oprah last year at this time. There are rumblings that WJLA will launch a 4PM Newscast in January. Meanwhile Amongst woman 25-54 WRC NBC 4's ratings are up 160% with their News programming.

My opinion:

In NYC Anderson Cooper's show is airing at 4PM on PIX 11. Certainly his show has got to be doing better in the ratings than the Tyra Banks rerun that was airing on PIX 11 in the 4PM time-slot previously. I wonder how ABC 7 is doing with its 4PM News that replaced Oprah.

When I saw your headline I thought they must have had Oprah. Right. Maybe they
should have gone with another hour of news. That's what former #1 WSB did. They are
now #2 behind Dr. Oz (who seems to have gotten the most out of Oprah's leaving).

Anderson Cooper may have been WJLA's only option, but it surely wasn't the best.

You'd think Dr. Phil would benefit from Oprah's departure.

By the way, saw a subway ad from WCBS-TV for Dr. Phil, referring to him as "New York's other relief specialist." As if Yankee fans care about Dr. Phil... (That has to be what they were referring to... right, sports fans?) ::)

First, I don't think WABC, WJLA, or WSB will ever get the numbers
at 4 that Oprah got (until the next Oprah comes along). Second,
I'm not sure that this is really Anderson's niche; he seems better
suited to his gig on CNN.

If anything, the talk show to beat now seems to be "Ellen"; number
one among women 25-54. I'm surprised she isn't doing better for
WXIA at 4 PM.

WJLA/Allbritton probably didn't go with a 4pm news, because Allbritton also owns and operates a cable newschannel for the region. And possibly because WRC 4pm newscast would have beat it anyways. Dr. Oz is on WTTG/Fox 5 at 4pm.

But, they probably would have been better off going with news or something else. Anderson's daytime show appears boring.

You got that right. I was changing channels today and his topic was trying to cure himself of
being afraid of heights.

He needs a female co-host or weekly guest host that he can bounce off of. Instead of covering topics maybe he needs to just interview celebrities (like Merv Griffin).

Quote from the guy who runs WJLA via DCRTV.com: "Hey, nobody said replacing Oprah was going to be easy!" :-\

I highly doubt anyone can replace the dominance Oprah had on the TV landscape...

The Leno effect, part 2?

Leno was at least entertaining in some way. Cooper is Boring as hell! Why do people watch this crap? ???

I don't know why you guys are so surprised at how stiff Anderson is. He is goofy but shy as hell, he can't carry anything alone. He is only outgoing when he has someone a goofy female that is way sillier and/or more outgoing than him to latch on to and vibe off, such as Kathy Griffin or Kelly Ripa. Pay close attention to how he interacts with Isha Sesay on 360 and you would know what I mean

Anderson Cooper has laid a big ol' egg with this show. I think it will be gone by January.

Locally KATV (sister station of WJLA) airs AC at 3pm CT (going head to head with "Dr" Phil on KTHV), and has placed "Dr Oz" at the old timeslot for Oprah (locally) at 4pm CT. I watched about 5-10 minutes of AC doing his daytime show and it was a painful imitation of the swill Sally Jessy Raphel (or the early days of Oprah) use to broadcast. Yes it was that bad and out of his element. The only thing worse would be "Steven And Chris" doing a sports show on ESPN.

WJLA could move Who Wants to Be a Millionaire to 4pm, followed by either a second episode, or Jeopardy or Wheel, move Scrubs to 12:30pm and then Anderson to the late nights. That temporary solution might be better ratings for the 4pm hour, if they are not yet ready to start a 4pm newscast, or have too much news on WJLA, when also trying to have NewsChannel 8.

So far, I've heard of only two Allbritton stations picking up Katie: WJLA and WHTM Harrisburg, PA.

Maybe he needs to get a podium, a table, a book of questions, some cars, some trips, cash, and a gaggle of contestants and make his show a game show.
