WJLD-1400 Birmingham goes Spanish language Reggaeton

With all these AM stations going Spanish (1320, 1450, 1480, 1500, etc.), how long till a Birmingham FM takes on the format?

On a related WJLD note, they seem to have an impossibly strong signal for 1 kW, and in fact, just before the format change, I heard them with a listenable signal all the way to south of Selma. It would at least appear to me that they are using several times their licensed power.

Whoa - I thought WJLD was something of a "institution" in Birmingham and would never change formats. This is a shocker to me!

I'm surprised you could get WJLD in Selma at all with WXAL in Dothan and WIQR on 1410 in Prattville... ???

I was scanning the dial this morning and heard spanish on WJLD, but I just figured it was the usual spanish programming they run on Saturdays anyhow. Don't tell me we have 6 spanish stations now...how will they all survive? ::)

Re: WJLD-1400 Birmingham (CORRECTION!)

Looks like I was mistaken. Their blues/R&B is back on now, but I do believe the Spanish programming was on a lot later than usual and their webstream was down this morning.

Their signal does seem to be enormous compared to other graveyard channel stations.

To Chad-Stevens, you must have a powerful radio.  To pick up WJLD here in Selma is simply amazing.  When I surf by 1400 AM, I usually get WXAL from Demopolis, during the daytime hours.

It begs the question: Why does WJLD still do a Saturday block of Spanish programming if we have 5 other fulltime AM's to fill that niche?

Could be a bought time arrangement.
