WJLQ "Q-100" switching formats?

Yep, it appears Q-100 is history. I have no idea when they started stunting, but I noticed this morning they are playing a lot of sniplets of "older" songs, including classic country and oldies. I did hear a liner saying something about the "legends" are coming to 100.7 on Thursday at noon. So I wonder, could Q-100 be switching to a classic country format or perhaps even an oldies format? I've looked online and haven't found anything on the format change, but I think we all knew they would eventually do something with that station because it hasn't been performing well over the last few years.

I guess we will find out at noon on Thursday. Any guesses as to what the new format will be? After being in radio and hearing stations "stunt" in between formats, I've learned you really can't guess the new format based on what they are playing while stunting, so it could be a surprise who knows.

FWIW, I thought WJLQ sounded best in the early 1990s. I spent a few days in Pensacola in April and May, 1991 and listened extensively. At that time, they were going hard after WABB and trying to get a foothold in Mobile. I'm guessing this was shortly after they went up on the big Alabama stick, allowing WJLQ to city grade both markets (?)

Their contesting involved getting the 9th caller and having them say "WABB SUCKS!" 9 times in 9 seconds. If they could, they won the prize! WABB, being the pros that they were, didn't acknowledge WJLQ at all. In the end, WJLQ only got marginal shares from Mobile. WABB was/is just too strong of a radio station. But it was fun to listen to nonetheless.

I noticed it today as well.. I hope it is not called Storm 100 - whatever it is.

hmmmmmm...
smokescreen, maybe? :-\

Storm 100? I've got it. All Weather, All The Time. That's the ticket! (Well, not "The Ticket," but you know what I mean).

They can just plug it into the $9.95 NWS weather radio and have the guy with the tinny voice that sounds like he's talking through a comb-and-tissue-paper filter.

Rock Bottom Expenses! Maximum Cash Flow! Why, it'll take the radio industry by... uh, Storm.

Personally, I think Storm 100 is a smokescreen... Get ready for something familiar, because Cumulus did such a bang-up job both times that they've tried it in the past ten years. ;)

Guess it was hard to compete with Alabama's bWorst Broadcasters.. (sorry, I hate rap) and WZNS, their signal does reach P'Cola. Don't know about WFFY 92.1 as their dance/urban/hiphop crap. I think there only 25KW thus, signal fade prob along Gulf Breeze.

So, guess it's time for WYCL to start getting local as I believe Q 100 had in house DJ''s spinning the FLAC files (or whatever format they use)

Now there playing Jackson tunes. I'm guessing "80s and more"

OOPSIE forgot to mention about them being JACK ed off by JACK playing the same songs.. so maybe "a little change will do us good" (Quotes a power company jingle that got stolen from School House Rock.)

There's ANOTHER station stunting at 98.1 FM. They keep playing the same Brian and the Judge promo from the Bush era and underfill breaks for plenty of dead air. GENIUS! What will they do? Start with using the "Stop Date" feature on commercials and show promo's and get off message boards and pay attention to your own station.

The most I listened to Q-100 was when they were the default WABB challenger, and it was during the short stint that they carried Rick Dees' syndicated morning show. Although it's the oldest radio gag ever, I marked out for Rick's phone prank bits (especially the one with the redneck guy complaining about McDonald's coupons), plus the Poorman's silly exploits. And it was the during the morning show that I first heard Daft Punk's "One More Time", now one of my favorites.

Now allow me to soapbox: Cumulus, flip 100.7 to sports with ESPN Radio or Fox Sports (with Dan Patrick and Jim Rome). You will own the sports radio audience in the MS/AL/FL coast, and you will damage two FM talk competitors in Mobile. Snap up Tide, Tiger, Gator, and/or Saints sports rights, and watch the money pile up. That is all.

What's the LEGITIMATE chance that they DO go after WABB again? 97.5 is as vulnerable as it ever has been - very cookie cutter, no edginess from their jocks, unagressive musically...It's a perfect time for Q to put on a really agressive Top 40 (maybe even a rhythmic?) and give it a good run. Granted, this is Cumulus we're talking about here so who knows if that's even possible

I think that the chances that they go after WABB again are pretty good. As for what kind of competition they'll be, look towards Dallas, Indy or Nashville for a clue.

I actually wrote to JACK FM telling them how stupid their station sounded and that they should have flipped the country station to a CHR Rhythmic and go after WABB hardcore... then they would own the market. They have BLX which is way too Urban sounding in my opinion (I know it does great numbers so all power to them) - it is actually a great sounding station for a market of this size... then they could get a ton of WABB audience... If they were to get a kick ass morning show - they would crush WABB - WABB is one of the worst sounding CHRs I have ever listened to... Their morning show is just awful and cheesy. I cannot stand it for longer than 2 minutes.

WABB is just awful.

Studies have shown that Country would be the best format for 100.7.
Therefore, Cumulus will put Scott Shannon's oldies channel on instead.

I think I get what u are thInkIng...I think u may have hit the jackpot.

Question for you all, do they care about Ft Walton Beach? or just their market? Their signals do go almost to San Destin.

It makes me wonder if radio here falls into play with the PD's decision to switch and 981 is stunting?? Thanks for the heads up.. Maybe we can hear C2C am for a change since WFTW is filled w/ soup at night thanks to their nighttime power reduction.

and someone beat me: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WJLQ

Tibbs...I think I am going to put a sat dish in Rob's front yard and install a Premiere receiver so he can hear his beloved "Coast to Coast"...that way he will quit bitching about it here everytime there is a post about the panhandle that doesn't have a damn thing to do with a talk format.

Still alive and kicking in Panama City.

Rob - Crumulass owns Z-96 WZNS FWB/Navarre, so they'd be trashing themselves in a sense by
doing an I hits type format on 100.7777771/2 (which makes sense to Commander Crapulass)
and so there you go on that. Look for it to possibly happen. Probably more like the Fly music than
the Z music depending on which side of the speaker you're listening from.

Again, Rob: Is it the Ron Hale 98.1 outta Holt (FWB) Sports/WTKE Holt/Navarrethat's stunting or is it
just screwed up and no one listens or what? Can you give us an hourly update or is it just constant
repetitive same old thing over and over?

CCENG - you may finally wanna move outta the Panhandle. Its limited opportunity to hunt Elk here.
Well, it pretty much has passed now -- licenses were in the tens of thousands of dollars. Pocket
change 4U, I know. But, it would buy a lot of beer bottles for whoever that Murphy guy is...wt#?
Rule was make love not war back when REAL people worked in radio in the legendary years
...not these radical thugs who get speeding tickets or throw gum on public streets. Especially when your
ex girlfriend protects the other guy, do you not loose your $6.50 hour gig on da beach. Damn. Isn't
there a Sonic hiring an announcer in Florala?

Thought for a minute some Qantum exec ran into 98.1's ex-ecutive director and won the dual for
the license (and thus the stunting at 98.1.) Guess nada.

Rob mostly and Charlie (who gets this crap)--- Rob _ I get what your saying about tallk over nite cause i don't sleep ever,
either. Just drink Hendricks Gin (made by some Jimmy guy I hear) and cry. But i did learn this when it warmed up here
KUFO out west doesn't even play C2C now even on tropo...our lives are ending anyway in 2012. Note to all - Stay away from donkey's
and aluminum foils as it's time for holiday decorsations and people steal radio strobeys. CALLING ALL ALIENS...Red Man Rules.

Well they had a really good chr in hot 104 that they screwed up. With a powerhouse signal like Q100 it's got to be either a chr or shutter country maybe give an outside shot of it being sports. I hope it's a chr we desperately need good chr here.

I'm gonna say Classic country, Oldies , or CHR (Rhythmic)
