WJLQ "Q-100" switching formats?

Okay, here's a serious answer (although I really do love All-Weather Storm 100).

"Country Legends" is a syndicated format from Joel Raab & Associates that has had significant success over the past 5 or 6 years. Think "Country Oldies"--not Hank, Sr. & Kitty Wells--more like Alabama, ETC, Reba, Eddie Rabbit, Merle and maybe (the years go by) a little Garth & Clint--basically seventies & eighties country tunes. Adults 45-64 (+).

My 82-year old mother-in-law lives in a "Country Legends" market and loves it. In that particular case, the longtime mainstream Country gun slapped it on their little Class A clustermate to soak up their older demos so that they could focus younger. What they didn't figure on was losing about one-third of their 12+ share and dropping out of #1 for the first time in 20+ years.

Most importantly for WJLQ & Cumulus, no jocks are required (so it's cheap to run) and Raab does all the heavy lifting. Nobody at 100.7 will have to do any thinking.

But will it put a dent in WXBM & WKSJ? Yup.

Tibbs...there is no Sonic in Florala....wish there was, I have to go thru there every time I go to Evergreen to work on Pete Wolff's station......I am sure Rob could get a job at WKWF-AM, the voice of Florala (they sound like they never modulate over 50%).....located in an old house trailer just off the main drag in downtown Florala...

Didn't they do country with kicks 104 and fail miserably? Why would they go there again. I could see a straight up oldies type station.

Straight CHR with Seacrest in AM. They're flipping stations to CHR all over the country. WABB is as vulnerable as ever, staff, budget and morale-wise.. (how's that time clock the jocks are punching working?) Talk FM makes the most sense, but this is Cumulus, so that's out...plus they can't just take WCOA's format and put it on a 100kw FM since that would have to violate all sorts of contracts with Mobile's Rush, Hannity and Beck affiliates. Unless...they put Magic 106 on 100.7 and put FM talk on the lower watt 106 signal...but again, that makes too much sense...

The big street unveiling of the new CHR will be at the Daughtry concert in early December....

mandatory staff meeting 15 minutes before the flip. Pizzati will be at his egomaniac best in that one. Ask anyone who's been in one of the many 104 flip firings...showing the jocks the door..the back door, so they don't walk past the surving sales staff.

Oldies? Country Legends? Of course! who wouldn't want that 65 yr old+ fixed income demo??

Actually you have the "should" play dead-on: flip Magic over to the big stick and slap WCOA-FM on the little stick.

And I'll put a quarter on your notion that what they WILL do is go after WABB. Not necessarily the smartest play--they actually have a pile of money to play defense with, and Cumulus can't/won't be able to outspend them. And last, but certainly not least, all of Dittman's time, effort, money & energy is focused on 97.5 while Cumulus is scattered in six different directions.

On the tactical level, WABB may seem vulnerable. On the Big Picture level, maybe not so much.

FWIW, "Country Legends" hasn't played out as a 65+ format. Solid 45-54 numbers--much like today's mainstream AC. In markets (like Pcola & Mobile) where the 25-54 buys are already splintered to smithereens, scoring big 45-54 is all you need to make the cash register ring much louder than a #5 ranking in 18-34, which is what the New Q100 will be trying to sell for the next few years...

It sounds like it's gonna be URBAN AC!!!! ;D YES!!! ;D They're looping old school R&B and saying get ready for the new storm!!! I wonder what this means for Magic106 ?

they are looping everything.. not just urban... listen longer and you will see.

The things I'm hearing are really brilliant. Someone did a lot of production work for this.

98.1 still in normal mode.. Guess Ron isn't giving up it's lame 100KW station for somethin better

Country would be kinda rough 'cause you got 98.7 102.7, 94.9 and I think one more station that can't be reached down here..

I'm guessing "hits and oldies" format judging by what I'm hearing. "Storming" usually means "Quiet Storm" based on tracks by Luthur Vandross, Jackson, etc... (then again you got 106.1 @ 6KW doing the same thing and BLX as well)

Then again your all the radio geniuses and I'm the person who wishes WFTW can be 100KW non dir. so I can hear C2C am without the nighttime RF soup..

Yea, I'll update you all or better yet.. tune in: http://player.cumulusstreaming.com/play.aspx?WJLQ-FM

It was late Charlie...I was thinking of Defuniak Springs, but couldn't remember it's name, even after all the years of the old Mix 103's ID's. There IS a Sonic there, right?

Do you hear hammers and construction work sounds? Same thing happened at i 106 in Nashvegass. What will it be? Hmmm!
Something original just for the Gulf Coast and nowhere else in the Clapulass infested radio wasteland called America? Not likely.
The i of the storm may be approaching..."and Leon is getting larger". What do I know???

Not at all.. it helped me VENT my frustration. It felt damn good to yell at them. JACK SUCKS

I want an edgy, in your face CHR with decent morning show.. a mix show or two - I want a 93-3 FLZ Tampa Bay to happen lol

yep....there is a Sonic in DFS....but I don't think Rob could work for Art Dees because he doesn't carry Coast to Coast. All of us on the board need to pool our money and buy Rob a dedicated Premiere downlink so he will quit bitchin' about not being able to listen to that crap.

Rob could probably lease one of those washed up dark AMs for $12 a month with Obama's stimulus package and run C2C 25/8.
Rob, do you like mustard or mayo on your Sonic burger. I am buying the next time I am in town. CCENG --- all liquid for us.

Just in case you wanted to know:

Same "company" that owns the domain "i106hits" now owns "i100hits" as of November 3. Just wonderin y, i mean i...

What's the LEGITIMATE chance that they DO go after WABB again? 97.5 is as vulnerable as it ever has been - very cookie cutter, no edginess from their jocks, unagressive musically...It's a perfect time for Q to put on a really agressive Top 40 (maybe even a rhythmic?) and give it a good run. Granted, this is Cumulus we're talking about here so who knows if that's even possible

It would make my day for them to go CHR. WABB sucks and Mobile/P-Cola is missing the real flavor CHR radio. But it seems like its not going to happen...but if a miracle happens, what would they call themselves...Im thinking but the names are already taken! CHR Rythmatic would be nice but why oldies? To me, its to small of a small market to have an oldies station. It better not be country or im movin out.

"JACK FM" in Mobile is satellite. So I'm gonna say whatever they choose for 100.7 it will be jockless or on the bird to save money. I think there was only one jock live on Q-100 anyway.
