WJMP/1520 Dropping Air America For...You Guessed It...

Fox Sports Radio.

AllAccess today:

----------

First, WJMP-A/KENT, OH picked up AIR AMERICA RADIO's lineup. Then, nearby WTOU-A dropped Sports (and FOX SPORTS RADIO) and flipped to liberal talk as WARF-A (RADIO FREE OHIO). Now, WJMP is dropping AIR AMERICA and flipping to -- yes -- Sports, using -- yes -- FOX SPORTS RADIO (and PREMIERE's JIM ROME), effective JULY 5, as FOX SPORTS RADIO 1520.

----------

This, of course, had even been rumored on this very board a week or so back. No word on if 1350 will cherry pick any of the AAR programming 1520 is leaving behind, though Randi Rhodes would fit rather nicely in that 6-10 PM hole when the Aeros aren't playing...at least as opposed to a repeat of the Ed Schultz hours that just aired 3-6...

-OA

I wonder how many listners will tune in with that crappy signal on 1520... you are correct "Fox Sports Radio" at one point was very good... I also think Keith Kennedy did 1350 AM a big favor by dumping "Fox Sports Radio"... Keith, you might as well pick up the right for Air America and run their programming on the weekends... and as OA pointed out - Randi Rhodes when the Aeros or Zips are not playing...

Attention Keith Kennedy:

Please please PLEASE clear Al Franken. The current 12 noon host is weak weak weak.

Also: Please consider placing Randy Rhodes in afternoon drive and delay Shultz to evening, then delay Jeanenne Garafolo's Majority Report to overnights.

Cherry pick the star power from Air America. PLEASSSSSSE!!!!!

> I have an idea! Why not market the ''new 1350''...love the Hannity billboards..where are the ''Radio Free Ohio'' boards..God knows Clear Channel has enough of them..U-S-E T-H-E-M..

And while you're at it, dump the Aeros so you can clear programming..it can't be making that much jack, or 1350 would still be all sports..

Clearing Franken may not be the best of ideas right now..he's mulling a run for the Senate from Minnesota, and apparently the stress of actually working for a living has him in near melt down mode..better to clear Randi Rhodes..leave Ed where he is, since he's getting a national roll out, and is actually listenable from time to time..

IIRC, doesn't Ed have priority in the PMD shift with all CC lib/progtalkers? (The only exclusion I can think of would be WJNO-A in West Palm Beach, where Randi's on live 3p-7p and Ed from 7p-10p. Of course, Randi's show started at WJNO before AAR picked her up...)

Let's not forget that the Aeros have to finish their season first. (And does 1350 stay as Aeros flagship thereafter - or have all games move to WHLO?) But adding Al or Janeane wouldn't be a bad start right now.

I'm told Kaiser Bill threw in the towel with a phone call, 2 hours BEFORE 1350 hit the air with the new format. That’s knee jerking.

Can you imagine receiving that call at any network? Hello...Yes It's been two weeks since you've joined us, how is the launch going, how can we help make it a success for you?.......You want to drop it? It's only been two weeks?

Air America on 1350? Hmmm....??? Interesting idea.

BTW: I have hundreds of Fox Sports 1350 promos I could give to the new Fox Sports 1520. They could simply chop them up, turnkey. With their anemic signal they have about as much of a chance being heard as they did on 1350. NO BURN

Al and Randi on WARF?

You are correct. Jones Radio has insisted upon live clearances for Ed Schultz, and even without Randi present, I'm sure they did so for 1350. I'm pretty sure the CC thing is pretty much a chain-wide deal between them and Jones.

And yes, WJNO is the exception due to Randi's nearly 10 year presence on the station and on the South Florida talk radio scene. I'd love to have heard the Jones rep trying to sell WJNO on putting Ed before Randi. :D They knew they weren't getting the live clearance there, so they settled...but Jones isn't settling anywhere else, really.

And they still could add Randi 6-10 PM or 6-whatever PM now. Her first 45 minutes would get on anyway, since the Aeros' pregame isn't until 6:45 most nights. WTPG/Columbus right now only carries Randi 6-7 PM anyway. And then the rest of her show would air on nights the Aeros are off or playing day games... and they play a decent amount of day games in the Eastern League. She'd get on at least 1-2 days out of 5 per week until September.

The Aeros' regular season ends on September 5th (day game), but if they're in the playoffs, that'll take probably until the end of that month.

Janeane's show might be a tougher call. All things being equal, I'd expect Randi's delayed show to be on in that 6 PM slot, unless they took 2 hours from each show (Randi 6-8 and Janeane 8-10). They're running Lionel at 10 and I don't see any of this changing that, if they do pick up any AAR shows. Randi's my favorite out of the libtalkers, save perhaps for Stephanie Miller, so I hope they do find a place for her on 1350, even pre-empted...

Though it's not a given, I would consider 1350 looking at AAR as possible if only because Thom Hartmann is a pretty weak show, frankly, and that alone may prompt them to try to get Franken...oh, and Keith seems to know the exact circumstances behind WJMP moving to dump AAR. Hmm, he said...

Am I Missing Any WJMP Formats?

> And all along I thout Kaiser Bill would flip to "Punk
> Country." (I wanna whip your cow ,let me show you how..etc
> etc)

It's about the only thing he hasn't tried on a station that once ran:

- Simulcast with 100.1 (as WKNT[AM], when 100.1 was WKNT-FM)
- Country
- Oldies (As "Jump Radio", the origin of the current WJMP calls)
- Sports (can't remember which network - I want to say One-on-One, now SNR)
- "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" in continuous loop (during the baseball strike)
- More oldies
- Standards
- TV audio of co-owned Ch. 29/35
- More standards
- And now, until July 5th, liberal talk

So, we're back to sports on the Kaiser Bill Format Wheel. I swear, he treats that little AM like Southern California broadcast legend Saul Levine treats his AMs in Los Angeles and New York. See an opening in the market? Run for it! Oops, there's another change! Change format again!

(I'm not 100% sure of the order above, but I think I got all the formats.)

After the TV audio, but before switching to "The music of your life", they ran syndicated talk programs with no local commercials. I remember Mike Gallagher was carried live, but I don't remember anyone else in the lineup. Don't know if this is still the case, but at the time, Mike Gallagher was also carried in the middle of the night on WNIR!

> Air America on 1350? Hmmm....??? Interesting idea.

Oh Keith....PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE......Franken live at Noon, and find a place for Rhodes (delayed early evenings before Lionel?) and Garafolo (delayed overnights after Lionel?). Man what a lineup....Miller-Franken-Shultz-Rhodes-Lionel-Garafolo.

Go for it, Keith! We're starving for the big three AAs (Franken, Rhodes, Garafolo). All three are always on TV and are written about, and we don't currently get them (even when they were on JMP we didn't get them, the signal was so rotten).

Oh, yes, that's right. I forgot WJMP's brief stint as a syndie talker! I seem to remember that they also carried some of the other programs WNIR carried in late night/weekend hours. Obviously not Jim Bohannon, since WNIR carries him live after Erickson and WJMP isn't on that late. I can't remember any of the other hosts...

I wonder when WJMP changes to FSR, will they continue airing the commercials for Triangle Pharmacy and Jenior Ford? I seem to recall that they're holdovers from the standards format. And they must get a great deal, as those two spots run in EVERY SINGLE BREAK in the current AAR format! And I do mean EVERY SINGLE BREAK, without exception.

If, by "New York," you mean "San Diego and, until very recently, San Francisco," then you are correct... :)

But Saul doesn't own anything in New York, as interesting as that would be.<P ID="signature">______________

I have no idea why New York popped into my head. I know for sure he has no stations there, and obviously was referring to his little San Francisco AM, KMZT/1510 Piedmont, which will be oinking as a KPIG simulcast soon. Right now, it's pumping out Saul's standards format via sister 540/1260 down in SoCal.

But for some reason...I typed New York. Go figure! You're right, it'd be kind of cool to see how Saul would react to format changes in THAT market...

Re: One more WJMP format

>Somewhere after oldies and before standards was a syndicated talk advice format, "Love, Relationships and More" that featured one of those midday women psychologists that were so popular ten years ago.

The last local format was the country WKNT, fifteen years ago, that still fetaured live DJ's. But that ended when they went oldies after the old WHK dropped oldies for business news in 1989. I think the oldies format was jockless. WJMP stands for the big "Jump" in the ratings expected with that format change.

What do you do with a small AM daytimer that can never be anything more? 1560 in Chardon turned back their license and went off the air. Once any daytimer does that, the frequency and license are permanently revoked by the FCC, to eliminate daytimers from the AM band.

WJMP and 1520 in Canton are the closest co-channel stations in the United States, less than 30 miles apart.

When Dick Klaus bought the stations in 1971, the AM was the main moneymaker and the FM was an afterthought. Same as when Malrite bought WHK in 1972 from Metromedia, and WMMS-FM was thrown in for one dollar.

Didn't WJMP also carry WOR's Dr. Joy Browne in this brief phase? (which would also mean that other WOR Network programs were a part of the sched...)

I do recall hearing Dr. Joy on WJMP (for some odd reason). I don't know if this carried over to the "relationship talk" format a poster below mentioned...

I worked for Dick Klaus...one of the real gentlemen in the business.

The FM quickly became the big deal...even when they were low-power. The FM became pretty much the primary station. Even back in the 70's they ran some split programming.
