WJNA Rumors

I've been hearing them since around the time
James Crystal fired Budell and Agony a few years
ago.

Since nothing has happened, I assume they
were just rumors.

But their programming is more schizo than
ever before, with Music Of Your Life at midday,
Oldies evenings, Jazz overnight, and "Jack for
old timers" the rest of the time.

Industry on-line trade "All Access" reports rumors that WJNA may be moving in a sports direction, anchored around Jim Rome. Okay, so James-Crystal may be making a big change with 640 - what's next for their 850? If they were really smart - and didn't let egos get in the way - they'd broker it. There hasn't been a full market signal to do brokered programming since WAXY went sports. I know, it's bad radio, but they have no listeners anyway - at least by brokering it, they could make some big bucks. It may not be the cool thing to do, it may not even be the "community minded" thing to do - but from a business standpoint, it'd be a smart move.

When will 640 be operating on it's New CP of 25,00 Watts with 6 towers full time? I'm assuming they arent yet..

But yeah, I think a brokered "format" on one of the stations wouldn't be such a bad idea.

The COL is now (and has been, for a while), Boca Raton per the ID (and no longer Royal Palm Beach), so that is Step #1 towards that. At least that's what they've been using on the TOH.

Of course, the difference between what you actually say on your ID, and what you've been legally granted to do, often varies.

Monday. 6AM

From Friday's Herald. Barry Jackson's column: WJNA-640 AM, which is changing its name to ManTalk-640 WMEN, adds Jim Rome's show noon to 3 p.m. weekdays beginning Monday.

From Friday's Sun-Sentinel. Jim Sarni's column: One possibility is WJNA (640-AM), another James Crystal station like WFTL, which is changing formats next week from nostalgic music to "young, hip male talk." It will be called Mantalk 640 WMEN and will feature Jim Rome (noon-3 p.m.), whose show has been missed on local radio.

I'm surprised that James Crystal has decided to essentially blow-up the 3RD highest Arbitron-rated AM radio station in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton market. Do they really think that there are enough 'young hip males' in the area that would support such a flip in format on a local 7,500 watt AM station ? This sounds like the type of format that could possibly work well on a powerful FM station, but I'm not so sure about an AMer.

THE MAJOR

Good point, Major. When you think about it, the proposed 640 lineup is not unlike the late Superalk940 with Rick and Suds, Hendrie, Rome, John and Jeff - and at various times, Brooke Daniels, Liz Wilde and even Randy Roades. I think 940's line up was stronger -and 940 has a great signal - at least before local sundown - they didn't pull it off, what makes James-Crytstal think they can?

just for the record, the lineup you speak of is more akin from the last days of wiod as a talk station under paxson. One other point: one of the major fallacies we run into in this biz is assuming that because something 'failed' somewhere, it will fail again. Failure does not negate a bad premise, it mostly reinforces bad execution.
