WJNT-AM website update

For those that might be interested, the updated WJNT website is online. There are still a few tweaks that need to be worked out, but the new site is a big improvement over the previous one. There are even links for IPhone and Android streaming, so you can listen almost anywhere on any device now. www(dot)wjnt(dot)com

Nice looking site. I like the view of Jackson from above. On the left side of the page there's a big ad for Rush but clicking on it yields an error message.

The streaming both on my computer and on my Android phone was fast to buffer. I wish every broadcaster's online stream worked that fast.

The only wonky thing is I had a hard time navigating to the mobile stream page on my phone. There's no easy way to activate the drop down box under "Quick Links" on a touch screen.

You can bring up the mobile streaming using the Apple / Android icons to the right of the Twitter and Facebook icons.

Very much improved over there older site. I may not be able to pick up WJNT at night here in Forest but at least I can stream at night. The streaming is much better than what they had. Instead of a service where they had a bunch of stations using the same service they can stream on their own now. When they introduce HD radio on commercial stations in Central Mississippi, WJNT would be a good candidate for someone's HD2 channel like some of the news radio or News Talk stations in the big cities like Dallas-Fort Worth's WBAP,Chicago, New Orleans (just like WWL and WWL-FM), Philadelphia's KYW, Los Angeles's KNX. Then they can reach all of central Mississippi at night.

A few more stations come to mind. This morning I was listening to KRLD streaming during their newsradio day time and they have a HD-2 on FM and I also heard that WPHT which is a newstalk station in Philly, a station which is now like WWL and was like WJNT also has a HD3 and HD4 on the oldies station that CBS co owns in Philly. If this can be done in central Mississippi, then WJNT can throw away their low power FM transmitter and plan on a greater coverage area at night.

Kind of OT but I don't know why the major commercial radio companies never rolled out HD in Jackson. The high up antennas and high power are about the only way HD can work half decently.

Getting WJNT on an HD-2 would be a smart move, but then so would acquiring an FM translator.

J. Boyd is correct - putting WJNT on an HD channel sounds like a great idea, but the receivers aren't there yet. Once I start seeing HD as standard equipment in Ford, Chrysler and GM vehicles... then it may be worth the investment in equipment. Believe me... implementing HD ain't a cheap proposition!

p.s. WJNT-FM1 is still operating nighttime only at 103.3 - it covers fairly well for a 500 watt booster station.

I have been monitoring 1180 at night and early morning lately. Early morning(Midnight-5AM) and late at night (7-Midnight) in Forest is out of range for WJNT at night. But early morning you can listen to Voice of America's Radio Marti in the Florida Keys at 3:00 -4:00 in the morning with a little bit of a faint country station interfering lately. Radio Marti or Voice of America on 1180 is highly directional going due south. Tonight I can get WHAM out of Rochester NY on 1180 at about 10:00 at night turning the radio due north. The Cuban station that has been giving WJNT problems has for some reason cut their power or they thought that it wasn't worth it to try to jam Radio Marti at night. If any of you have been monitoring Glenn Hauser's DXld group the Cuban station's absence or cutting their power has been noticeable lately to some MW Dxer's . I don't know if the chief engineer at WJNT's comfort level may preclude making some changes in power, but I do know that the Cuban station that has been giving WJNT problems has not been doing so lately.

If they have someone monitoring their frequency outside the Jackson area at night this might be a good time to re-examine how they operate at night.

WJNT's nightime signal doesn't seem to be as good as it was back in the mid 90's. They must have been running too much power at night. It used to be able to overide the cuban station at night. back around 94 or 95 there was a noticble drop in night coverage.

The directional array for WJNT was a wreck before it was rebuilt in the mid 90's. The previous engineer (for whatever reason) let it operate non-directional (and over power) for no telling how long. It has been operating as per FCC licensed parameters since the rebuild. There is no possibility of a night time power increase for WJNT unless WHAM downgrades - which is very unlikely. Cuba may not be noticeable right now, but I bet they will be back.

You have to look at what the Cuban government wants to do jam R. Marti on 1180 Khz. The offending transmitter in Cuba on 1180 Khz is at 200 KW. This is why WJNT gets jammed so often. When R. Marti gets jammed so does WJNT. So as the fortunes of R. Marti go so does the chances that WJNT will be jammed.
